Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) are a long-term solution contributing significantly towards Intelligent Transport systems (ITS) in providing access to critical life-safety applications and services. Although Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are attracting greater commercial interest, current research has not adequately captured the real-world constraints in VANET handover techniques. therefore, in order to have the best practice for VANET services, it is necessary to have seamless connectivity for optimal coverage and ideal channel utilization: this comes at the cost of overlapping signals of adjacent RSUs. this overlapping effect can be investigated using concepts such Network Dwell time, time Before Handover and Exit times. In this simulation study we investigate the feasibility and benefits of providing a ubiquitous communication in VANET under different mobile environments. We also study the impact of beacon frequency and velocity on Network Dwell time, time Before Handover and Exit times, which will help us to predict the handover times and thus make proactive handover possible. therefore understanding handover issues is critical in supporting life-safety applications and services in VANETs.

Robots can provide real-time bone cutting assistance on various operational conditions. A human intent estimation together with a bilateral force control has been designed to assist the surgeon in total knee replacement. Different admittance gains are online adjusted based on estimated human intent, followed by the robot to exert appropriate forces to the cutter, either pushing or pulling forces so that the bone cutting can be carried out in easier, safer and more precise way. Experiments show that the proposed control structure is promising to meet the clinical needs for real-time bone cutting assistance.

the problem of recommending items to users is relevant to many applications and the problem has often been solved using methods developed from Collaborative Filtering (CF). Collaborative Filtering model-based methods such as Matrix Factorization have been shown to produce good results for static rating-type data, but have not been applied to time-stamped item adoption data. In this paper, we adopted a Dynamic Matrix Factorization (DMF) technique to derive different temporal factorization models that can predict missing adoptions at different time steps in the users' adoption history. this DMF technique is an extension of the Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) based on the well-known class of models called Linear Dynamical systems (LDS). By evaluating our proposed models against NMF and timeSVD++ on two real datasets extracted from ACM Digital Library and DBLP, we show empirically that DMF can predict adoptions more accurately than the NMF for several prediction tasks as well as outperforming timeSVD++ in some of the prediction tasks. We further illustrate the ability of DMF to discover evolving research interests for a few author examples.

We study SMT problems over the reals containing ordinary differential equations,. they are important for formal verification of realistic hybrid systems and embedded software. We develop delta-complete algorithms for SMT formulas that are purely existentially quantified, as well as there exists for all-formulas whose universal quantification is restricted to the time variables. We demonstrate scalability of the algorithms, as implemented in our open-source solver dreal, on SMT benchmarks with several hundred nonlinear ODEs and variables.

Reliability and flexibility are among the key required features of a framework used to model a system. Existing approaches to design resource-constrained, soft-real time systems either provide guarantees for output quality or account for loss in the system, but not both. We propose two independent solutions where each modeling technique has both the above mentioned characteristics. We present a probabilistic analytical framework and a statistical model checking approach to design system-on-chips for low-cost multimedia systems. We apply the modeling techniques to size the output buffer in a video decoder. the results shows that, for our stochastic design metric, the analytical framework upper bounds (and relatively accurate) compare to the statistical model checking technique. Also, we observed significant reduction in resource usage (such as output buffer size) with tolerable loss in output quality.

In this paper we present a method for detecting and localizing an active speaker, i.e., a speaker that emits a sound, through the fusion between visual reconstruction with a stereoscopic camera pair and sound-source localization with several microphones. Both the cameras and the microphones are embedded into the head of a humanoid robot. the proposed statistical fusion model associates 3D faces of potential speakers with 2D sound directions. the paper has two contributions: (i) a method that discretizes the two-dimensional space of all possible sound directions and that accumulates evidence for each direction by estimating the time difference of arrival (TDOA) over all the microphone pairs, such that all the microphones are used simultaneously and symmetrically and (ii) an audio-visual alignment method that maps 3D visual features onto 2D sound directions and onto TDOAs between microphone pairs. this allows to implicitly represent both sensing modalities into a common audiovisual coordinate frame. Using simulated as well as real data, we quantitatively assess the robustness of the method against noise and reverberations, and we compare it with several other methods. Finally, we describe a real-time implementation using the proposed technique and with a humanoid head embedding four microphones and two cameras: this enables natural human-robot interactive behavior.

We propose a GRASP heuristic for solving the joint problem of placement and routing of process networks from the field of compilation for embedded manycore architectures. the method we propose consists in assigning applications expressed as dataflow process networks on homogeneous manycore architectures by taking into account the routing maximal capacity of the arcs for the underlying Network-On-Chip. Our experiments illustrate the algorithm ability to efficiently obtain good quality routable assignments, within an acceptable computational time, even for large size instances. Moreover, validation of our approach is also realized on data coming from an embedded application of video processing.

Software-Defined Radio (SDR) is a radio technology that most of conventional radio components are implemented in software. Besides the advantages like re-configurability and flexibility, a SDR system has to face a critical challenge on real-time processing due to high jitter and latency. thus, understanding latency in SDR systems is very important. this paper focuses on investigating the latency of a popular SDR platform - GNU Software Radio with a new Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRP) device - USRP embedded Series E100. this research investigates and analyzes the reasons of the delays by considering all the buffering mechanisms in the platform. After that, we verify and quantify them by using three experimental methods. the first method is to calculate the whole delay of the SDR system by measuring the round-trip time (RTT). the second method measures subparts of the whole latency by using timestamp during a packet transmission process. the third approach is designated to measure the latency of the hardware part and bus communication part. We believe this study offers the better understanding of the latency in a new embedded USRP series - USRP E100 with GNU Software Radio platform.

We developed an integrated silicon detector to be embedded in a stratospheric balloon in order to investigate the radiative atmospheric environment. the detector was calibrated with a Californium source, and it was fully characterized under neutron beams which produced various secondary ionizing particles. Differential detection cross sections for different neutron beam energies were shown to be in good agreement with simulations performed with the MC-Oracle code. We performed four stratospheric balloon flights (with ESA and CNES) and confirmed the correlation between the count rate and the altitude. Moreover, we observed that the radiative environment is not isotropic and demonstrated the potential of our tool for investigating the radiative atmospheric environment. these results are useful for estimating the particle flux that affects electronic devices and onboard aircraft systems.

Testing and executing large-scale computational applications in public clouds is becoming prevalent due to cost saving, elasticity, and scalability. However, how to increase the reliability and reduce the cost to run large-scale applications in public clouds is still a big challenge. In this paper, we analyzed the pricing schemes of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and found the disturbance effect that the price of the spot instances can be heavily affected due to the large number of spot instances required. We proposed a dynamic approach which schedules and runs large-scale computational applications on a dynamic pool of cloud computational instances. We use hybrid instances, including both on-demand instances for high priority tasks and backup, and spot instances for normal computational tasks so as to further reduce the cost without significantly increasing the completion time. Our proposed method takes the dynamic pricing of cloud instances into consideration, and it reduces the cost and tolerates the failures for running large-scale applications in public clouds. We conducted experimental tests and an agent based Scalable complex System modeling for Sustainable city (S-3) application is used to evaluate the scalability, reliability and cost saving. the results show that our proposed method is robust and highly flexible for researchers and users to further reduce cost in real practice.
