Recent advances in embedded system design has increased their interference in different application domains, where software only solutions have prevailed. this new implementation platform require however quality of results in terms of speed, power and computational complexity, along with strict time-to-market schedules. Performance is sought by utilizing modern Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices, offering hundreds of GFLOPs with maximum power efficiency. Productivity is enforced with High-Level Synthesis (HLS) or Electronic System Level (ESL) or C-based hardware design methodologies, that offer an efficient abstraction level to boost-up early prototyping. However, just like the migration from schematics to Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) required specific coding styles for efficient hardware design, C-based hardware design also requires efficient coding guidelines to be followed. this paper presents a set of such coding guidelines, and evaluates their efficiency for FPGA based scientific, floating point arithmetic calculations. As found through extensive experimentation, the performance and area optimizations offered by efficient coding can improve the ones offered by HLS only, even more than 90%. So, while not every C program can be turned into hardware with the press of a button, efficient coded C programs can offer a profitable productivity boost.

Cloud computing has become popular in recent years due to the cost and resource savings associated with virtual machines using shared resources. Unfortunately, this mode of operation serves as a vulnerability amplifier because each computer executes multiple versions of the same operating code base carrying the same vulnerabilities. this paper explores techniques for the system's run-time loader to generate diversity from a single binary source. In addition, we describe compile-time techniques that can augment and enhance the diversity gained through the run-time system alone. Collectively, the techniques randomize the code and data of the binary eliminating vulnerability amplification. Entropy is used as a measure of diversity and we explore the entropy gained by the techniques under several different assumptions concerning the attackers knowledge of the system. the techniques have been implemented into Bear, a from-scratch hypervisor and microkernel designed to run military cloud applications that require resilience.

We present a new method for optimizing the C/C++ code of embedded control software with the objective of minimizing implementation errors in the linear fixed-point arithmetic computations caused by overflow, underflow, and truncation. Our method relies on the use of an SMT solver to search for alternative implementations that are mathematically equivalent but require a smaller bit-width, or implementations that use the same bit-width but have a larger error-free dynamic range. Our systematic search of the bounded implementation space is based on an inductive synthesis procedure, which guarantees to find a solution as long as such solution exists. Furthermore, the synthesis procedure is applied incrementally to small code regions - one at a time as opposed to the entire program, which is crucial for scaling the method to programs of realistic size and complexity. We have implemented our method in a software tool based on the Clang/LLVM compiler and the Yices SMT solver. Our experiments, conducted on a set of representative benchmarks from embedded control and DSP applications, show that the method is both effective and efficient in optimizing fixed-point arithmetic computations in embedded software code.

Today, many security applications rely on imaging sensors. However, the quality of the captured image is highly susceptible to environmental lighting conditions such as poor or non-uniform illumination. Security imaging systems rely on efficient real-time image enhancement. For autonomous systems, determining and producing the best visually enhanced image output as perceived by the human visual system remains a challenge. In this paper, we present a metric for autonomous evaluation that will enable security systems to automatically determine the best human visual quality image. To achieve this, we have established a "no parameter no reference" metric that can determine the best visually pleasing image. the metric is algorithm independent such that it can be utilized for a diversity of enhancement algorithms. We present our DCT transform domain measure of enhancement (TDME). Unlike spatial domain measure of enhancement methods, the proposed measure is independent of image attributes and does not require any parameter selections to operate. the proposed measure is applicable to compressed and non-compressed images and can be used as an enhancement metric in conjunction with many different image enhancement methods.

In this paper, we show how code can be generated at different levels of abstraction from a single source description. To this end, we use a model-driven development tool called Averest that is based on a synchronous programming language. We illustrate our approach by means of a case study from the domain of distributed real-time automotive embedded systems. this paper focuses thereby mainly on the use of the Averest toolkit to generate code at different levels of abstraction.

Currently the development of embedded software managing hardware devices that fulfills industrial constraints (safety, real time constraints) is a very complex task. To allow an increased reusability between projects, generic device drivers have been developed in order to be used in a wide range of applications. Usually the level of gener-icity of such drivers require a lot of configuration code, which is often generated. However, a generic driver requires a lot of configuration and need more computing power and more memory needs than a specific driver. this paper presents a more efficient methodology to solve this issue based on a formal modeling of the device and the application. Starting from this modeling, we use well-known game theory techniques to solve the driver model synthesis problem. the resulting model is then translated into the actual driver embedded code with respect to an implementation model. By isolating the model of the device, we allow more reusability and interoperability between devices for a given application, while generating an application-specific driver. © 2013 ieee.

Optimization methods generally do not fall into the most suitable algorithms for parallelization on a GPU. However, a relatively good efficiency still can be obtained if the method is properly adapted to the GPU programming model, which is the case for dynamic programming. In this article, we propose a parallelization strategy for thread grouping for dynamic programming in CUDA. We show that parametrizing the solver parallelism according to the hardware allows better performance. the strategy provides good acceleration compared to a standard GPU parallel strategy on a dynamic programming-based implementation of the knapsack problem. We show this strategy is helpful in the case of the multi-dimensional knapsack problem, where computing multi-dimensional indices is a costly operation. © 2013 ieee.

Modern real-time embedded systems have increasingly penetrated our daily life and are also often constrained in terms of temperature and energy. In this paper, a thesis is defended that from a real-time systems perspective, thermally constrained dynamic power management approaches behave very similar to idealised dynamic voltage and frequency scaling. Hence, existing dynamic voltage and frequency scaling solutions proposed for periodic/sporadic task models can be applied to thermally constrained dynamic power management systems with moderate effort. this work presents the similarities along with the distinctive elements between two approaches. Within the case study, the porting of a dynamic voltage and frequency scaling algorithm of the literature to thermally constrained dynamic power management system is demonstrated.

In many homeland security and counterterrorism applications, there is a need to secure and protect large Critical Key Infrastructures and Resources (CKIR), such as transportation, aviation, highways, and maritime systems. these usually span hundreds of thousands to millions of miles of roadways, maritime, and/or airways. To achieve the monitoring of such large CKIR systems there is a need to develop cooperative intelligent geographically and computationally distributed multi-agent-based monitoring systems. In such dynamic large environments, where agents could be moving randomly or less randomly to reach their respective goals, agent path planning for autonomous agents becomes challenging. It is desired to have the agents not only be equipped with intelligence to move autonomously and avoid obstacles and each other, but also to be able to learn autonomously how to reach the shortest path to their goal(s) in a minimum amount of time and exploratory trials. In this paper we address issues related to multi-agent reinforcement learning in a distributed-computing-memory environment where the agents have limited and not complete knowledge of their environment(s). We present an architecture for the distributed dynamic agent communication based on the Message Passing Interface (MPI). In particular, the focus and contribution of this paper are two-fold: the analysis of the effects, on the multi-agent system learning and total execution time, of (a) the agent environment size, (b) the agents shared-over-a-network learned information with/from other agents with one same goal versus agents not sharing information among themselves and (c) the agents sharing information when having one same agent goal versus the agents sharing information when having different agent goals. the desired aim is the analysis of the factors and conditions that increase the overall distributed multi-agent system computational performance and learning speed.
