the Elastic Mixed-Criticality (E-MC) task model and an Early-Release EDF (ER-EDF) scheduling algorithm have been studied to address the service interruption problem for low-criticality tasks in uniprocessor systems. In this paper, focusing on multicore systems, we first investigate the schedulability of E-MC tasks under partitioned-EDF (P-EDF) by considering various task-to-core mapping heuristics. then, with and without task migrations being considered, we study both global and local early-release schemes. Compared to the state-of-the-art Global EDF-VD scheduler, the superior performance of the proposed schemes in terms of improving the service levels of low-criticality tasks is confirmed through extensive simulations.

Energy has become the dominating concern for resource management. We advocate an energy-centered design approach for resource-management systems. To this end, we structure systems in layers, where layers implement higher-level resources using lower-level ones. For each layer, we describe the relation of the performance delivered for the higher layer to its demands on the lower layer and refer to that relation as demand/performance function. the lowest layers are rooted in hardware and express demand in terms of energy, the highest layers provide performance in terms of user-specific utility, thus leading to an Energy/Utility characterization of a complete system. We describe the overall approach, some research challenges and few initial results on the representation of demand/performance functions.

In this paper, we study run-time reconfiguration problem for tolerating core failures on NoC many core platforms with following three objectives:(1) maintaining the maximal timing similarity between real-time embedded application' timing properties before and after the system reconfiguration, (2) guaranteeing to meet real-time embedded application's deadline requirements after system reconfiguration, and (3)minimizing the task migration time delay. Two approaches, i.e. mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) based approach and a heuristic largest influence core first (LICF) approach, are developed to derive a reconfiguration strategy that meets the three objectives. the MIQP approach is able to obtain the optimal solution and can be used at run-time if extra memory is available. For memory limited systems, the LICF approach can be used to obtain a solution in polynomial time that is near optimal.

MapReduce has been widely used as a Big Data processing platform. As it gets popular, its scheduling becomes increasingly important. In particular, since many MapReduce applications require real-time data processing, scheduling real time applications in MapReduce environments has become a significant problem. In this paper, we create a novel real-time scheduler for MapReduce, which overcomes the deficiencies of an existing scheduler. It avoids accepting jobs that will lead to deadline misses and improves the cluster utilization. We implement our scheduler in Hadoop system and experimental results show that our scheduler provides deadline guarantees for accepted jobs and achieves good cluster utilization.

Many embedded real-time applications are typically time-triggered and preemptive schedulers are used to execute tasks of such applications. Orthogonally, composable partitioned embedded platforms use preemptive time-division multiplexing mechanism to isolate applications. Existing composable systems that support two-level scheduling are restricted to cooperative intra-application schedulers, and thus cannot execute the time-triggered applications. In this work, we introduce a framework that allows concurrent, composable execution of such applications on temporally-partitioned systems. the framework is composed of an execution platform and a method for timing analysis of applications running on the platform. the platform realizes a software-based timed-interrupt virtualization technique on an existing composable system. Multiple time-triggered applications may run concurrently using different intra-application preemptive scheduling policies, e.g., fixed-priority and rate-monotonic. the analysis method formalizes the available processing time for executing each application on a processor in order to enable schedulability tests for different policies. Finally, these concepts are demonstrated by executing a number of applications, first on an FPGA prototype and second on a Matlab simulation of the platform. the results indicate a composable and concurrent execution of multiple time-triggered applications using our proposed framework. Furthermore, the implementation of the technique has low cost in terms of memory footprint and execution overhead.

thermal management is a major design challenge in three-dimensional dynamically partially reconfigurable systems. Unlike three-dimensional integrated circuits, thermal management is more difficult in three-dimensional dynamically partially reconfigurable systems because of the extra heat generated by task reconfiguration. this study proposes an on-line thermal-aware task management scheme to reclaim the run-time thermal slack from low-power tasks, and uses a configurable thermal threshold to achieve a trade-off between the reconfiguration overhead and thermal distribution. the proposed scheme maximizes the tolerable task execution power to better utilize the system and provides a quality of service guarantee under the thermal constraint. this study also evaluates the capability of the proposed methodology using a series of experiments, presenting encouraging results.

this paper presents an energy-aware electronic design automation (EDA) methodology for the system-level exploration of hierarchical storage organizations, focusing mainly on data-intensive signal processing applications. Starting from the high-level behavioral specification of a given application, several memory management tasks are addressed in a common algebraic framework, using data-dependence analysis techniques similar to those used in modern compilers. Within this memory management software system, the designer can explore different algorithmic specifications functionally equivalent, by computing their minimum storage requirements. the system can perform an exploration based on energy consumption of signal assignments to the off- and on-chip memory layers, followed by a storage-efficient mapping of signals to the physical memories. the last phase of the methodology is an exploration approach for energy-aware banking of the on-chip memory, which takes into account both the static and dynamic energy consumption.

Given that power is one of the biggest concerns of embedded systems, many devices have replaced DRAM with non-volatile Phase Change Memories (PCM). Some applications need to adhere to strict timing constraints and thus their temporal behavior must be analyzed before deploying them. Moreover, modern systems typically contain multiple cores, causing an application to incur significant delays due to the contention for the shared bus and shared main memory (PCM in this work). One of the challenges in the timing analysis for PCM main memories is the high discrepancy between read and write latencies and the high contention among cores. Finding an upper bound on these delays is non-trivial mainly because (i) memory requests may be issued by co-executing applications at random times, (ii) it is difficult to determine apriori which applications will be concurrently executing, and (iii) the type of requests applications will issue. this work proposes a method to derive upper bounds on the increase in execution time of applications executing on such PCM-based multicores. It considers the contention on the shared memory and focuses on dealing with the asymmetric read and write latencies of PCM-based memories, while taking into account the specific policy applied to schedule requests by the memory controller.

the EC project parMERASA investigates techniques for the parallelization of industrial real-time applications from automotive, avionic, and construction machinery domains. the aim is to execute such applications on many-core processors with up to 64 cores. the system software plays a key role in the deployment of applications. However, requirements of application domains differ widely, and thus no general solution can be implemented. In this paper we present the cross-domain system architecture utilized in the parMERASA project to provide Runtime Environments (RTEs) for the three different domains. the approach eases the implementation of domain-specific RTEs through a generic kernel library that provides basic hardware abstractions and timing-analyzable synchronization mechanisms.

In this paper, we target at the direct-coupled solar energy powered multicore architectures that provide direct power supply between photovoltaic (PV) generation and the load without the adoption of battery. We present Solar-Tune, a real-time scheduling technique with load tuning for sporadic tasks on solar energy powered multicore systems. the objective is to fully utilize the available solar energy while meeting the deadlines of tasks. To solve the problem, we first perform analysis and formulate the scheduling problem in each duration as an integer linear programming (ILP) model to obtain an optimal schedule. then we present a heuristic algorithm to dynamically refine the task scheduling based on the predictions of the availability of solar energy. We conduct experiments using real-world meteorological data across different geographic sites. the experimental results show that SolarTune can significantly improve the solar energy utilization ratio and reduce the number of deadline misses compared to the conventional task scheduler.
