We consider energy minimization by speed-scaling of an open shop multiprocessor with n jobs and m machines. the paper studies the complexity of a primal-dual solution algorithm of [4], which was an open question in that paper. We prove that in a neighbourhood of the solution the complexity of the algorithm is O(mn log 1/epsilon) if n not equal m and epsilon is the roundoff error of the computer. the paper demonstrates how linearization can be used to investigate the complexity of an algorithm close to the optimum. An estimate of the size of the neighbourhood where the linearization error is smaller than the computer's roundoff error is also given.

Building correct distributed systems is challenging, and any attempt for providing a direct, global proof of correctness of a distributed system is bound to fail. An interesting alternative approach consists in starting from a specification or program of the system under construction, verifying all properties of interest on it - which has a much lower complexity than the verification on a distributed implementation - and finally derive a distributed implementation using some correct by-construction approach. Note that this topic is related to distributed control, where the objective is to enforce in a distributed manner some global constraint on a plant. Deriving such a distributed controller directly is difficult, and the correctness of the resulting controller is difficult to prove. A more feasible approach in this context is to first construct a global controller, then transform it into distributed one, again by means of a correct-by-construction approach.

As distributed applications became more commonplace and more sophisticated, new programming languages and models for distributed programming were created. In the context of continuously increasing data flows in parallel applications, there is a renewed interest in the dataflow paradigm. this paper shows why AGAPIA language is suitable for dataflow programming. AGAPIA is capable of expressing massive parallelism in a manageable way for programmers, allowing building dynamic nodes and links in the data flow graph at runtime. the nodes of the dataflow graph, also called programs, are modular and reusable. the communication is transparent for users allowing them to concentrate on the high level flow and algorithm. A complete application and an analysis in terms of productivity and performance are presented in order to demonstrate the AGAPIA's capabilities.

Specialized encryption processors offer both low latency and high throughput at the expense of higher cost. A modern x86 system that encompasses several compute architectures (SISD/SIMD) might be able to perform well compared to a dedicated encryption unit at the fraction of the cost. this paper presents how one might accelerate AES ECB 128 bit using modern commodity hardware found in today's x86 computers. Focus architecture is AMD A6 5400K, coupled with a discrete GPU AMD R7 250. Benchmark results compare CPU OpenSSL execution, CPU AES-NI acceleration, integrated, discrete GPU and heterogeneous combinations of the above processing units. We present multiple test results and attempt to explain some inconsistencies of what would be expected.

Actor programming languages provide the kind of inherent parallelism that is needed for building applications in the mobile cloud. this is because the Actor model provides encapsulation (isolation of local state), fair scheduling, location transparency, and locality of reference. these properties facilitate building secure, scalable concurrent systems. Not surprisingly, very large-scale applications such as Facebook chat service and Twitter have been written in actor languages. the paper introduces the basics of the actor model and gives a high-level overview of the problem of coordination in actor systems. It then describes several novel methods for reasoning about concurrent systems that are both effective and scalable.

Scalability of data and throughput are important features of modern applications designed for distributed and loosely-coupled computer systems. In the paper, throughput scalable two-layer structures, called throughput Scalability for SD2DS (TS2DS), are introduced. For maximum efficiency, the structures are stored in a distributed RAM of a multicomputer. Every data unit of TS2DS (a component) is split into two parts: a header and a body, located in distinct layers of the structure. For maximum flexibility, both layers are managed independently. Reference Counters are used to control the activity of the components and of the buckets. the most active components are mirrored to keep the throughput high. Two variants of the TS2DS, with different managemenent of Reference Counters, are introduced and evaluated.

the classical redistribution problem aims at optimally scheduling communications when moving from an initial data distribution to a target distribution where each processor will host a subset of data items. However, modern computing platforms are equipped with a powerful interconnection switch, and the cost of a given communication is (almost) independent of the location of its sender and receiver. this leads to generalizing the redistribution problem as follows: find the optimal one-toone mapping of the subsets of data items onto the processors for which the cost of the redistribution is minimal. this paper studies the complexity of this generalized problem. We provide optimal algorithms and evaluate their gain over classical redistribution through simulations. We also show the NP-hardness of the problem to find the optimal data partition and processor permutation (defined by new subsets) that minimize the cost of redistribution followed by a simple computation kernel.

parallel programming is commonly done through a library approach, as in the Message Passing Interface (MPI), directives, as in OpenMP, language extensions, as in High Performance Fortran (HPF), or whole new languages, as in Chapel. However, we argue that the concepts underlying these different programming systems show great commonality. Hence, we propose a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) that expresses an abstraction of these common concepts. As we show by means of a prototype that uses both MPI and OpenMP tasks as backend, this common vocabulary can then be expressed in multiple parallelism types. © 2014 ieee.

Large amounts of real-time data is used by geographically distributed real-time applications. Using DRTDBMS1 is more and more needed to better manage the large amount of real-time data. In order to take account of unpredictable workload, Quality of Service (QoS) based approaches are the most appropriate. In the case of distributed real-time applications, it is necessary to take into account the problems of load balancing for user transactions between different nodes. Feedback Scheduling based approaches can manage the unpredictable workload variations. Further, the imprecise computation technique has been defined as a technique to enhance the Quality of Service QoS) in centralized RTDBMS. In this paper, we propose to apply the imprecise computation approach in a distributed feedback control scheduling architecture to improve the QoS in DRTDBMS. then, we focus on two ways of optimization in DRTDBMS, 1) the space optimization in which we propose to apply three replication data policies, and 2) the QoS optimization in which we propose an improvement of the imprecise computation to ensure a better quality of the service.
