Functional, memory-managed parallel languages (FMPLs) are a recent innovative approach to shared-memory parallel programming. Despite their rising prevalence in other areas, FMPLs have yet to gain traction in HPC. In this work, we explore the utility of FMPLs for HPC by re-implementing the NAS parallel Benchmarks in an FMPL. For this study, we ported the benchmarks into the parallel ML language. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using parallel ML for HPC applications based on our development experience. We compare the performance of our parallel ML implementation to the existing C/OpenMP version. the FMPL implementations are 1.02x-5.76x slower compared to OpenMP. Our positive development experience combined with some competitive performance results suggest that FMPLs have the potential to become a viable choice for HPC applications. We conclude by describing our future work to automatically manage distributed memory within an FMPL, creating a compelling new programming model for HPC.

PV systems are widely used and widely accepted worldwide. Conversion stage efficiency is a critical criterion in selecting PV converters. In order to process PV power in an efficiency way with less cost, this work presents a step-up current source dual active bridge (DAB) partial power converter (PPC) for PV applications. the proposed configuration works as input parallel output series (IPOS) structure, which helps in reducing input current ripple, component size and cost. IPOS structure is convenient for PV application step-up ability, which is common requirements for different PV applications such as grid tied PV applications. the current source dual active bridge (DAB) with its two bidirectional switches and presented modulation allows soft switching of all semiconductors under wide load conditions. Maximum power point Tracking is implemented to track the maximum power of the PV modules by controlling the phase-shift of the converter. this abstract includes the theoretical and simulation analysis, while deep system analysis and more comparative studies will be included in the final version.

In order to ensure Web application QoS and remain low cost for the provider simultaneously in Web traffic burst scenario, workload prediction and corresponding provisioning mechanism are investigated in this paper. At first, a virtual resource provisioning architecture is designed based on workload prediction under cloud hosting environment. then, combined with the existing Moving Average (MA) model and Support Vector Regression (SVR) model, we propose an integrated workload prediction model named LOF-MASVR through using Local Outlier Factor (LOF) algorithm. With the application of this prediction model, a dynamic mechanism of resource provisioning is proposed by introducing an adaptive coefficient. Experiments using real Web workload demonstrate that LOF-MASVR model can reduce Service Level Agreement (SLA) violation number in peak periods around 70%, in comparison with existing prediction models. According to resource provisioning experiments on CloudSim platform, the proposed dynamic provisioning policy can effectively reduce the risk of SLA violation, which simultaneously ensures the virtual resource utilization.

Analyzing parallel programs has become increasingly difficult due to the immense amount of information collected on large systems. In this scenario, cluster analysis has been proved to be a useful technique to reduce the amount of data to analyze. A good example is the use of the density-based cluster algorithm DBSCAN to identify similar single program multiple data (SPMD) computing phases in message-passing applications. this structure detection simplifies the analyst work as the whole information available is reduced to a small set of clusters. However, DBSCAN presents two major problems: it is very sensitive to its parametrization and is not capable of correctly detect clusters when the data set has different densities across the data space. In this paper, we introduce the Aggregative Cluster Refinement, an iterative algorithm that produces more accurate structure detections of SPMD phases than DBSCAN. In addition, it is able to detect clusters with different densities.

Microprocessor design space exploration is an inevitable stage in the early stages of microprocessor design. In work [1], a critical path analysis based design space exploration method is proposed. Critical path analysis on the instruction dependence graph is often used in the research of the micro-architecture of the instruction pipeline of the microprocessor. Previous analysis method must process the huge log file serially and the analysis time was very long. In this paper, a parallel analysis algorithm based on multithreading was presented. By partitioning the log file into multiple blocks and using multiple threads to process them in parallel, this algorithm achieved a nearly linear speedup according to the number of thread.

the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) is home to Mira, a 10 PF Blue Gene/Q (BG/Q) system. the BG/Q system is the third generation in Blue Gene architecture from IBM and like its predecessors combines system-on-chip technology with a proprietary interconnect (5-D torus). Each compute node has 16 augmented PowerPC A2 processor cores with support for simultaneous multithreading, 4-wide double precision SIMD, and different data prefetching mechanisms. Mira offers several new opportunities for tuning and scaling scientific applications. this paper discusses our early experience with a subset of micro-benchmarks, MPI benchmarks, and a variety of science and engineering applications running at ALCF. Both performance and power are studied and results on BG/Q is compared with its predecessor BG/P. Several lessons gleaned from tuning applications on the BG/Q architecture for better performance and scalability are shared.

Repairing locality is an appreciated feature for distributed storage, in which a damaged or lost data share can be repaired by accessing a subset of other shares much smaller than is required for decoding the complete data. However for Secret Sharing (SS) schemes, it has been proven theoretically that local repairing can not be achieved with perfect security for the majority of threshold SS schemes, where all the shares are equally regarded in both secret recovering and share repairing. In this paper we make an attempt on decoupling the two processes to make secure local repairing possible. Dedicated repairing redundancies only for the repairing process are generated, which are random numbers to the original secret through this manner a threshold SS scheme with improved repairing locality is achieved on the condition that security of repairing redundancies is ensured, or else our scheme degenerates into a perfect access structure that is equivalent to the best existing schemes can do. To maximize security of the repairing redundancies, a random placement mechanism is also proposed.

Conventional distributed system courses follow a syllabus in which a list of topics is discussed independently and at different levels of abstractions. We propose to use a wireless sensor network environment to pin all topics down to concrete applications and to maintain issues such as fault tolerance and coordination continuously present. We describe a syllabus with eight conceptual modules, each of them associated to a hands-on experience with wireless sensor networks, which may be assigned either as homework or as a hands-on class, depending on the number of classroom hours that are available.

Over the years, researchers have leveraged patients' discourse on social media to inform clinical and digital interventions. We contribute to these research efforts by mining and analyzing diabetes-related public posts on two social networks (online forums) with the aim of identifying management strategies adopted by diabetes patients and suggesting appropriate interventions. We develop a medical named entity recognition framework, MediNER, to identify named entities related to diabetes management and classify them into Food, Medication, therapeutic Procedure, and Supplement. Our analysis shows that food-related strategies are most prevalent among both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients, followed by medication-related strategies. Strategies involving supplements (such as vitamins) are the least utilized. We also investigate for gender differences in the strategies employed by diabetes patients. Finally, we offer design recommendations for digital interventions aimed at diabetes self-management based on our findings.

the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is a widely used solution for the computational fluid dynamics. It has the natural advantages of parallelization that several parallelizable nested loops in space dimensions are enclosed by the time steps. Most previous work focus on the DOALL parallelism and data reuse for cache optimization. this paper proposes an effective approach to accelerate the LBM computing by fully exploiting temporal locality on shared memory multicore platform. the approach uses loop transformations to obtain the implementation of D2Q9 model of LBM that achieves data reuses for cache in successive time steps and wave-front parallelism. Besides, a synchronization strategy based on POST/WAIT operations is presented to optimize the communication among parallel threads. On an Intel multicore platform, the implementation of the proposed approach outperformed the original parallel codes and a cache-based approach for different grid sizes, improving the performance by 11% and 9% on average, respectively.
