the utilization of toolkits for writing parallel and/or distributed applications has been shown to greatly enhance developer's productivity. Such an approach hides many of the complexities associated with writing these applications, rather than relying solely on programming language aids and parallel library support, such as MPI or PVM. In this work, we evaluate three different middleware systems that have been used to implement a computation and I/O-intensive data analysis application from the domain of computer vision. this study shows the benefits and overheads associated with each of the middleware systems, in different homogeneous computational environments and with different workloads. Our results lead the way toward being able to make better decisions for tuning the application environment, for selecting the appropriate middleware, and also for designing more powerful middleware systems to efficiently build and run highly complex applications in both parallel and distributed computing environments.

In this paper we present a data prefetch policy for the execution of 3D interactive applications on coarse-grain reconfigurable architectures. User's actions not occurring at expected times combined with the volume of data involved in this kind of applications impact strongly in performance. We define a data prefetch scheme to avoid reconfigurable processing unit stalls due to operands unavailability through profiling methodologies and special search algorithms. Experimental results satisfy time constraints of interactive applications and show a power effective solution for them.

Design patterns are generic solutions to recurring software design problems. the Correct Object-Oriented Pattern-based parallel Programming System (CO/sub 2/P/sub 3/S) uses design pattern templates to generate code for design patterns. CO/sub 2/P/sub 3/S has been used to generate small parallel and sequential applications. this research evaluates the utility and performance of CO/sub 2/P/sub 3/S on larger network server applications. the network server design pattern template is introduced, which significantly eases the complexities involved in network server application development. the network server is highly configurable and suitable for the construction of a large variety of network server applications, with a diverse range of functionality and performance requirements. In this paper we highlight a generated Web server with performance comparable to Apache.

We report on work in progress that aims to provide a run-time management kernel for applications running on FPGAs with embedded CPUs. We describe the global concept, the organization of the hardware environment for the reconfigurable modules and the reconfiguration strategy supported by the run-time management kernel. Practical issues concerning the implementation of the system on a Virtex-II Pro-based board are also addressed.

Xilinx Virtex FPGAs offer the possibility of dynamic and partial run-time reconfiguration. When designing a system that includes this feature it has to be made sure, that no signal lines cross the border to other reconfigurable regions. the complex modular design flow to generate partial bitstreams and the need of macros for physical interconnection of IP-Cores causes the necessity to investigate in alternatives. this paper describes the design and implementation of a software reconfigurable multiprocessor system, based on Xilinx MicroBlaze softcore processors. A real application in the automotive domain implemented on a Xilinx Virtex-II 3000 FPGA is used to present results.

this paper presents a micro-sequencer based reconfigurable system. We introduce the concept of quick reconfiguration and compare it with existing "full reconfiguration" schemes. In a typical scenario, reconfiguring a system from one application to another does not require a "full" reconfiguration. Instead we can exploit similarities among various applications to save on reconfiguration time. We show that a significant speedup is gained by using quick reconfiguration on a set of image processing benchmarks, which takes seconds versus hours in traditional FPGA reconfigurations. We evaluate the flexibility, the performance and the parallelism of this architecture with customized functional units. Furthermore, a method was proposed for customizing clustered datapath to improve the throughput of the system. this method accelerates the system by 13 times on average compared to the case where the same algorithm is running on a modern processor. We also map various applications directly onto FPGAs and measure the silicon area and the power consumption and compare to the case where the applications are implemented on micro-sequencers. On average, micro-sequencer takes 31% more area and consumes 23% more power. However, the reconfiguration time is decreased to less than one second on average while for applications directly mapped onto FPGAs, it is near 3000 seconds.

Grid applications have to cope with dynamically changing computing resources as machines may crash or be claimed by other, higher-priority applications. In this paper, we propose a mechanism that enables fault-tolerance, malleability (e.g. the ability to cope with a dynamically changing number of processors) and migration for divide-and-conquer applications on the grid. the novelty of our approach is restructuring the computation tree, which eliminates redundant computation and salvages partial results computed by the processors leaving the computation. this enables the applications to adapt to dynamically changing numbers of processors and to migrate the computation without loss of work. Our mechanism is easy to implement and deploy in grid environment. the overhead it incurs is close to zero. We have implemented our mechanism in the Satin system. We have evaluated the performance of our system on the DAS-2 wide-area system and on the testbed of the European GridLab project.

this paper concerns the realization of an adaptable protocol processing unit (PPU) targeting reconfigurable SoCs in mobile communication applications. the PPU is based on our design technique for dense-coded programmable finite state machines. this approach reduces programming costs by combining memory-based function generators with reconfigurable logic. Furthermore, we added custom modules that implement application-specific logic and arithmetic operations to achieve proper results.

With the rapidly increasing diversity of parallel architectures and the increasing time and labor for developing parallel applications, the performance portability of parallel programs is becoming increasingly important and should be considered when designing parallel execution models, APIs, and runtime system software. this paper analyzes both code portability and performance portability of parallel programs based on the EARth model $an event-driven fine-grain multi-threaded execution and architecture model. We discuss several design considerations of the EARth system that contribute to the performance portability of parallel applications. Experiments of four representative benchmarks are conducted on several different parallel architectures, including two clusters listed in the 23rd supercomputer TOP500 list. the results demonstrate that EARth based programs can achieve robust performance portability across the selected hardware platforms without any code modification or tuning.

In this paper we examine the effectiveness of a circulant graph proxy-network overlay topology. We select to examine a circulant graph that exhibits several attributes which strengthen the proxy network's resistance to DoS attacks. Proxy networks enable applications to communicate with users without disclosing their IP's. An application's resistance to DoS attacks is improved by hiding it behind a proxy-network based overlay. We evaluate the selected-topology's fault-tolerance and its effectiveness in the resistance of DoS attacks.
