the MIP S.C.O.C was designed to overcome the Von-Neumann bottleneck and develop massive on-chip parallelism to achieve Teraflop scale single chip performance. We case study here a specific 2 MB MIP node that has a 128 bit datapath. this paper also specifies the technological reqirements and discusses the implementation strategy to support the feasibility of the project. We develop the ISA format and preview the hardware compiler COS, that will map applications and schedule the instructions on the MIP S. C. O. C. We then discuss the library specifications and COS-HLF unit interface. We develop the scalable pyramid cluster to accomodate massive node performance. We discuss briefly the programming model and an application execution to demonstrate the scalability.

Many of the world's most critical systems are distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems, with mission-critical quality of service (QoS) requirements. However, because of their nature - heterogeneous nodes and links, shared and constrained resources, and deployment in dynamic environments - providing QoS requires coordinated QoS management throughout the system of multiple end-to-end application streams competing for shared resources. It requires dynamic resource allocation to these end-to-end application streams based on potentially changing mission requirements and shaping application behaviors to effectively use the resources that are allocated. In this paper, we describe the issues involved with providing end-to-end QoS management in DRE systems, an architecture we have designed to support system-wide end-to-end QoS management, and a multi-UAV surveillance and target tracking application we are using to evaluate these technologies.

Consistency is an important issue in distributed shared memory (DSM) systems. these systems share a set of objects or virtual memory pages. the data sharing enables the applications in workloads to access the data concurrently. But, these concurrent accesses can generate some inconsistencies in the shared data state. the consistency models are responsible for managing consistency of shared data for the workloads. In this work, we propose, present and analyze a reconfigurable consistency model for object based DSMs. We called this consistency model ROCoM (reconfigurable object consistency model). ROCoM behavior was represented using a reconfigurable algorithm (RA) and it analysis was made using a simulation tool (ClusterSim - Cluster Simulation Tool). Our results show that ROCoM, on average, had 55% better performance than the other traditional consistency models.

the next generation of mobile systems with multimedia processing capabilities and wireless connectivity will be increasingly deployed in highly dynamic and distributed environments for multimedia playback and delivery (e.g. video streaming, multimedia conferencing). the challenge is to meet the heavy resource demands of multimedia applications under the stringent energy, computational, and bandwidth constraints of mobile systems, while constantly adapting to the global state changes of the distributed environment. In this paper, we present our initiatives under the FORGE framework to address the issue of delivering high quality multimedia content in mobile environments. In order to cope with the resource intensive nature of multimedia applications and dynamically changing global state (e.g. node mobility, network congestion), an end-to-end approach to QoS aware power optimization is required. We present a framework for coordinating energy optimizing strategies across various layers of system implementation and functionality and discuss techniques that can be employed to achieve energy gains for mobile multimedia systems.

As high-performance computing increases in popularity and performance, the demand for similarly capable input and output systems rises. parallel I/O takes advantage of many data server machines to provide linearly scaling performance to parallel applications that access storage over the system area network. the demands placed on the network by a parallel storage system are considerably different than those imposed by message-passing algorithms or data-center operations; and, there are many popular and varied networks in use in modern parallel machines. these considerations lead us to develop a network abstraction layer for parallel I/O which is efficient and thread-safe, provides operations specifically required for I/O processing, and supports multiple networks. the buffered message interface (BMI) has low processor overhead, minimal impact on latency, and can improve throughput for parallel file system workloads by as much as 40% compared to other more generic network abstractions.

Today's collaborative applications over the Web span domains as diverse as enterprise e-commerce applications and biomedical applications. We have previously developed and formally investigated "Web Coordination Bonds," a theoretically powerful artifact for interconnecting autonomous Web objects for control and data flows, and for enforcing dependencies. Here, we describe BondFlow, a system that enables the configuration and execution of workflows using Web bonds over heterogeneous Web objects. the system automatically generates lightweight proxy wrapper objects to enable encapsulated Web services to be interconnected through Web bonds. the small footprint wrappers (less than 10 KB) can reside on Java-enabled handheld devices. We describe the design, architecture and performance of the BondFlow system. Our initial performance results indicate that both wrapper creation time and Web bond related execution time are small. In contrast to our BondFlow system, existing systems need expert programming to create workflows, do not easily allow distributed coordination of workflows, and usually do not support heterogeneity of device, data and network. the system is preliminary, and further research is ongoing to extend its configuration and execution platforms.

Mission-critical distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems are becoming quality of service (QoS) enabled, providing predictable, adaptable, and managed behaviors. Due to the dynamic and distributed nature of DRE systems, unplanned events can occur that could significantly impact the behavior and performance of these systems. In order to effectively manage unplanned events in DRE systems, we first clearly define what unplanned events are and how they differ from planned events. A planned event often has known signatures that we can probe for or monitor and is expected to happen during the operation of the system, even if it is "abnormal" behavior. Our discussion on QoS management of unplanned events primarily focuses on unpredictable events rather than unexpected events. the QuO middleware framework provides a template implementation base for designing and instantiating adaptation strategies for both planned and unplanned events independent of functional code, and the resulting QoS management code can be intelligently weaved into the functional code for the system and its applications.

Buffered coscheduled (BCS) MPI is a novel implementation of MPI based on global synchronization of all system activities. BCS-MPI imposes a model where all processes and their communication are tightly scheduled at a very fine granularity. thus, BCS-MPI provides a system that is much more controllable and deterministic. BCS-MPI leverages this regular behavior to provide a simple yet powerful monitoring and debugging subsystem that streamlines the analysis of parallel software. this subsystem, called monitoring and debugging system (MDS), provides exhaustive process and communication scheduling statistics. this paper covers in detail the design and implementation of the MDS subsystem, and demonstrates how the MDS can be used to monitor and debug not only parallel MPI applications but also the BCS-MPI runtime system itself. Additionally, we show that this functionality need not come at a significant performance loss.

Data distribution management (DDM) is one of the six services provided by HLA/RTI as complementarities of declaration/interests management to provide a flexible and extensive mechanism for further throttling the data placed on the network and delivered to federates based on simulated entities' interests of data. DDM is of essential importance especially for large scale distributed simulations. In the past a few years, two main types of DDM protocols have been developed, named region-based methods and grid-based methods. However, all of these techniques have their obvious drawbacks, which affect their deployment in most applications that require high performance and low overhead. In our previous work, we have proposed a dynamic grid-based DDM scheme that shows a great potential when compared to both region-based and grid-based approaches. In this paper, we wish to improve our previous scheme, which we refer to as optimized dynamic grid-based DDM, to further reduce irrelevant data that might be received by simulated entities.

the running times of many computational science applications are much longer than the mean-time-between-failures (MTBF) of current high-performance computing platforms. To run to completion, such applications must tolerate hardware failures. Checkpoint-and-rest art (CPR) is the most commonly used scheme for accomplishing this - the state of the computation is saved periodically on stable storage, and when a hardware failure is detected, the computation is restarted from the most recently saved state. Most automatic CPR, schemes in the literature can be classified as system-level checkpointing schemes because they take core-dump style snapshots of the computational state when all the processes are blocked at global barriers in the program. Unfortunately, a system that implements this style of checkpointing is tied to a particular platform amd cannot optimize the checkpointing process using application-specific knowledge. We are exploring an alternative called automatic application-level checkpointing. In our approach, programs are transformed by a pre-processor so that they become self-checkpointing and self-rest art able on any platform. In this paper, we evaluate a mechanism that utilizes application knowledge to minimize the amount of information saved in a checkpoint.
