the recent emergence of dramatically large computational power, spanning desktops with multi-core processors and multiple graphics cards to supercomputers with 10(5) processor cores, has suddenly resulted in simulation-based solutions trailing behind in the ability to fully tap the new computational capacity. Here, we motivate the need for switching the parallel simulation research to a higher gear to exploit the new, immense levels of computational power. the potential for grand-scale real-time solutions is illustrated using preliminary results from prototypes in four example application areas: (a) state- or regional-scale vehicular mobility modeling, (b) very large-scale epidemic modeling, (c) modeling the propagation of wireless network signals in very large, cluttered terrains, and, (d) country- or world-scale social behavioral modeling. We believe the stage is perfectly poised for the parallel/distributed simulation community to envision and formulate similar grand-scale, real-time simulation-based solutions in many application areas.

In this paper, we present the use of parallel-in-space simulation approach to accelerate the dynamic simulation of power systems with high penetration of distributed generation, i. e. high number of power electronic devices. the approach is implemented using the OpenCL framework and executed on a graphic processing unit (GPU). We benchmark our prototype implementation using a distribution network with increasing number of distributed generator which is modeled by voltage source inverter. Results show that the computation time for the distributed generators solution stays nearly constant with the increasing number of the distributed generators in the network.

Actor programming languages provide the kind of inherent parallelism that is needed for building applications in the mobile cloud. this is because the Actor model provides encapsulation (isolation of local state), fair scheduling, location transparency, and locality of reference. these properties facilitate building secure, scalable concurrent systems. Not surprisingly, very large-scale applications such as Facebook chat service and Twitter have been written in actor languages. the paper introduces the basics of the actor model and gives a high-level overview of the problem of coordination in actor systems. It then describes several novel methods for reasoning about concurrent systems that are both effective and scalable.

An exponential increase in the speed of DNA sequencing over the past decade has driven demand for fast, space-efficient algorithms to process the resultant data. the first step in processing is alignment of many short DNA sequences, or reads, against a large reference sequence. this work presents WOODSTOCC, an implementation of short-read alignment designed for Graphics processing Unit (GPU) architectures. WOODSTOCC translates a novel CPU implementation of gapped short-read alignment, which has guaranteed optimal and complete results, to the GPU. Our implementation combines an irregular trie search with dynamic programming to expose regularly structured parallelism. We first describe this implementation, then discuss its port to the GPU. WOODSTOCC's GPU port exploits three generally useful techniques for extracting regular parallelism from irregular computations: dynamic thread mapping with a worklist, kernel stage decoupling, and kernel slicing. We discuss the performance impact of these techniques and suggest further opportunities for improvement.

Scientific computing is a field that applies computer science to solve scientific problems from domains like genetics, biology, material science, chemistry etc. It is strongly associated with high performance computing (HPC) and parallel programming fields as scientific computing typically utilizes large scale computer modeling and simulation and thus requires large amounts of computer resources. Public clouds seem to be very suitable for solving scientific computing problems, but they are often built on commodity hardware and it's not simple to design applications that can efficiently utilize large amounts of computing resources. this paper gives an overview of a study that researches the use of distributed computing frameworks like MapReduce to greatly simplify solving scientific computing problems in the cloud and compares how well the results measure up to the current de facto standard practices of the distributed computing field.

parallel computing is applied in computed tomography to shorten the imaging time and achieves outstanding effects. But image reconstruction algorithm remains to be significantly time-consuming when faced with the large data sets which decreases the efficiency of imaging process. Single graphic card cannot solve this problem because of the limitation on video memory. this paper presents a parallel method for FDK algorithm using multi-GPU based cluster system. In the method, the cluster system is divided into three levels: nodes, GPUs and single GPU. Corresponding parallel strategies are designed for different levels according to the algorithm characteristics and hardware structures. the experiments show that the multi-GPU based cluster system is able to achieve the same precision with the single node meanwhile it will gain higher speedup ratio with the increasing number of nodes or GPUs. the computing time of whole reconstruction reduces to almost half of the origin by doubling the computing devices.

Scalability of data and throughput are important features of modern applications designed for distributed and loosely-coupled computer systems. In the paper, throughput scalable two-layer structures, called throughput Scalability for SD2DS (TS2DS), are introduced. For maximum efficiency, the structures are stored in a distributed RAM of a multicomputer. Every data unit of TS2DS (a component) is split into two parts: a header and a body, located in distinct layers of the structure. For maximum flexibility, both layers are managed independently. Reference Counters are used to control the activity of the components and of the buckets. the most active components are mirrored to keep the throughput high. Two variants of the TS2DS, with different managemenent of Reference Counters, are introduced and evaluated.

Model checking is a powerful technique for verifying and analyzing complex systems in many application fields. the analysis process of complex and concurrent systems often requires large computation resources which represents a real challenge. Even with simple configurations, the well-known state explosion problem is faced as the generated state space of such systems grows exponentially with the number of the system components. Numerous methods and techniques have been developed to overcome this problem including parallel and distributed-memory processing. In this paper, we aim at improving the performances of the so called Symbolic Observation Graph (SOG) construction by using parallelization techniques. A SOG is a hybrid structure where the transitions of a system are divided into observed and unobserved ones. the nodes of this graph are then defined as sets of states linked with unobserved transitions (and encoded symbolically with a BDD) and edges are labeled with observed transitions only (and are explicitly represented). We propose two parallel algorithms to build the SOG. the first algorithm is dedicated for shared memory architectures, and is based on the distribution of the SOG construction on several threads using a dynamic load balancing scheme. the second algorithm is proposed for distributed memory architectures, and distributes the SOG construction on processes using a static load balancing scheme. these two algorithms are implemented and their performances are studied and compared to each other and to the sequential construction of the SOG.

Cloud computing is one of the most popular technologies nowadays because of its wide utilities and various benefits in several IT companies all over the world. However, in front of the increasing users' requests for computing services, cloud providers are encouraged to deploy large data centers, which consumes very large amount of energy and contribute to high operational costs. Among the effects, carbon dioxide emission rate is growing each day due to the huge amount of power consumption. this energy efficiency is an important issue in cloud computing, mainly due to the required electrical power to run these systems and to cool them. therefore, energy consumption has become a major concern for the widespread deployment of Cloud data centers. the growing importance for parallel applications in the Cloud introduces significant challenges in reducing energy consumption from hosted servers. this paper addresses the problem of placing independent applications on the physical servers (hosts) of a Cloud infrastructure. We proposed a novel heuristic to allocate applications so that total energy consumption is reduced. Our proposal respects various constraints e.g. the machines availability, capability and the duplication of applications. Experiments are illustrated to validate the potential of our approach.

Large amounts of real-time data is used by geographically distributed real-time applications. Using DRTDBMS1 is more and more needed to better manage the large amount of real-time data. In order to take account of unpredictable workload, Quality of Service (QoS) based approaches are the most appropriate. In the case of distributed real-time applications, it is necessary to take into account the problems of load balancing for user transactions between different nodes. Feedback Scheduling based approaches can manage the unpredictable workload variations. Further, the imprecise computation technique has been defined as a technique to enhance the Quality of Service QoS) in centralized RTDBMS. In this paper, we propose to apply the imprecise computation approach in a distributed feedback control scheduling architecture to improve the QoS in DRTDBMS. then, we focus on two ways of optimization in DRTDBMS, 1) the space optimization in which we propose to apply three replication data policies, and 2) the QoS optimization in which we propose an improvement of the imprecise computation to ensure a better quality of the service.
