In this paper we address the implementation in FPGAs of a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) decoder embedded in a prototype of a 4G mobile receiver. this MIMO decoder is part of a multi-carrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) radio system, equipped with multiple antennas at both ends of the link, that is able to handle up to 32 users and provides raw transmission bit-rates up to 125 Mbps. the task of the MIMO decoder is to appropriately combine the signals simultaneously received on all antennas to construct an improved signal, free from interference, from which to estimate the transmitted symbols. A comprehensive explanation of the complete design process is provided, including architectural decisions, floating-point to fixed-point translation and description of the validation procedure. Implementation results using FPGA devices of the Xilinx Virtex-4 family are also reported.

the paper discusses the design process of a simple programmable logic controller. the conception of the PLC is presented. the idea is to develop PLC, which is compatible with EN 61131-3 standard. this part of standard refers to programming languages. However, instructions of the PLC are directly related to the hardware structure of the PLC. the most important part of the PLC is central processing unit and the paper especially focuses on this aspect. Instruction set, encoding and some elements of the design are presented and the paper is structured to show design flow from instruction list to a hardware design. the CPU was implemented in FPGA device. © ifac.

Unexpected tasks can appear when an embedded system has been designed and is operating in a defined structure. In such a situation it is not possible to add any new component to the system. In some situations modification of the architecture is possible to be made but cost of such an operation can be very high and not economically justified. In such a situation some of unexpected tasks cannot be executed by the system. Cooperation of two or more embedded systems could possibly solve such a problem. Two or more cooperating embedded systems can even execute some tasks that cannot be executed separately by one individual system. therefore we believe that that it is very important to provide methodologies to assign to a group of embedded systems unexpected tasks that cannot be executed separately by any system by itself (C) 2018, ifac (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Architectures and real-time communication of distributed embedded-systems (programmable electronic systems, PES) are topic of many research projects and have been identified as a barrier for a fast time-to-market product development in general. At the same time, more and more flexibility and distributed intelligence is required. While modern distributed computer systems provide flexibility and re-usability through dynamic service-based architectures and standardized open structures, safety critical real-time systems are often strictly limited in the usage of such approaches. the difficulty is the combination of both, flexibility (more dynamic approaches) and safety (more static approaches). For finding a tailored solution for future burner control products while staying in the low cost range, this paper discusses a safety middleware for small embedded-systems with limited resources. that means, memory is limited, there is no dynamic memory management and the network capabilities are restricted. the result is a safety middleware (Mid600), including communication, data distribution and a service-based interface, supporting a scalable distributed safety relevant burner control PES. © ifac.

the paper proposes a statistical classification method devoted to multisensor embedded systems. It is based on estimation of multidimensional probability density function (pdf) which describes statistical properties of multisensor measurement data. Various methods of pdf estimation are compared. the performance of the algorithm was checked through implementation on digital signal processor. the results of the tests confirmed high efficiency of the proposed method and its low numerical load. the paper also presents an example of application to breast cancer diagnosis. Population aging has become a worldwide problem. Fall accidents are considered as one of the major health risks, especially for elderly people. Fall detection devices are the key to distinguish a fall from daily activities, automatically alert when a fall occurred and significantly decrease the time of rescue when the monitored patient falls down. the proposed prototype is composed of a tri-axial accelerometer communicating to a Zybo board through Inter-Integrated Circuit ((IC)-C-2) interface. A threshold-based algorithm has been implemented based on peaks acceleration detection and inactivity posture recognition after falling and executed as a standalone application on a Zynq Z-7010 Field programmable Gate Array (FPGA). this first implementation using Vivado and Xilinx SDK showed prominent results in terms of power consumption and time of execution.

In the paper we consider a software suit for multilevel programming of computer systems with reconfigurable macro-object architecture. We describe programming methods and software tools for development of effective parallel applications for multichip reconfigurable computer systems (RCS). the main distinctive feature of the software suit in comparison with similar known software tools is automatized partitioning of the parallel application into fragments, each of which is structurally implemented in a separate FPGA of a multichip RCS, and software tools of reconfigurable macro-object architecture development for implementation of tasks from various problem domains © ifac.

Computationally intensive algorithms for closed loop control and similar systems today can be implemented using reconfigurable FPGA devices. One approach is using soft microprocessor designs and implementing the algorithms as programs. this paper reports about a case study within an ongoing project that investigates a multi-core soft microprocessor solution for a closed-loop control application. Requirements within the project lead to a specialized processor design. Some results from experimental work are presented, demonstrating feasibility and efficiency of the approach. © ifac.

Numerous digital signal processing algorithms originate from the implementation of analog circuits. this approach works well in the case of linear systems. However, there are many nonlinear signal processing methods which digital implementations are accompanied by undesirable spectral distortions. there is a great need to design alias-free and computational efficient algorithms for their microprocessor implementation dedicated to industrial applications. the scope of the paper is to propose an algorithm which employs the methods of analysis and synthesis of the signals in order to minimize the spectral distortion associated with the nonlinear processing of digital signals the paper presents also the implementation of the proposed method using an inexpensive embedded system based on the ARM Cortex-A53 processor.
