computer-aided tools offer great potential for the design and production of tactile models. While many publications focus on the design of essentially two-dimensional media like raised line drawings or the reproduction of three-dimensional objects, we intend to broaden this view by introducing a taxonomy that classifies the full range of conversion possibilities based on dimensionality. We present an overview of current methods, discuss specific advantages and difficulties, identify suitable programs and algorithms and discuss personal experiences from case studies performed in cooperation with two museums.

Building energy simulation is valuable during the early stages of design, when decisions can have the greatest impact on energy performance. However, preparing digital design models for building energy simulation typically requires tedious manual alteration. this paper describes a series of five automated steps to translate geometric data from an unzoned cad model into a multi-zone building energy model. First. cad input is interpreted as geometric surfaces with materials. Second, surface pairs defining walls of various thicknesses are identified. third, normal directions of unpaired surfaces are determined. Fourth, space boundaries are defined. Fifth, optionally, settings from previous simulations are applied, and spaces are aggregated into a smaller number of thermal zones. Building energy models created quickly using this method can offer guidance throughout the design process. Copyright © 2011 by IPAC'11/EPS-AG.

We have developed a pen device for cad applications in virtual reality which provides novel features compared to existing systems. the SenStylus consists of a wireless pen designed to be ergonomically handled by the user for spatial interaction using a six degree of freedom optical tracking. In addition to the classic digital button(s) input, it provides analog multi-axial control, and a dual-rumble feedback output. We have integrated the device into an existing virtual reality cad environment and extended the application functionalities with new devicespecific features. the SenStylus vibration feedback improves perception in the virtual world by controlling frequency, amplitude, and duration of the feedback, simulating a variety of responses during collisions and selection tasks. this capability enforces the visual depth sensitivity, which is critical when wo rking with complex cad models. the multi-axial analog input provides a natural interaction paradigm to the user, thus simulating pen pressure and angle as in real world sketching and in real clay modeling. Dynamic tool-tip dimensioning and shaping are implemented as extra features. We present some applications to prove the added value of the SenStylus. the evaluation of the device received positive feedback by designers and engineers alike. the new features offered by this device can easily be extended to other VR applications using the API provided. this paper presents a novel approach to the introduction and use of animation and motion graphics in foundation design education. design inquiry and understanding as generated from, and translated by, movement is the focus. this work explores animation as a design methodology in the first weeks of architectural education. the proposed design exercise discussed here will probe the concept/context and spatial/visual literacy of the learned sense of space-time in architectural design education and representation. Here the digital application of animation and motion graphics is intended to be process driven to encourage students to find an attitude about solutions rather than a solution to the design project. the intention is to examine the relationship between form and space through a structured exploration of movement within a kit-of-parts design project that explores a three-dimensional spatial construct. Animation as a design method poses unique potentials and pitfalls. Animation and motion graphics, as a collection of instances, is both questioned and exaggerated. this project creates a threshold experience of learning that puts in motion an exploration of integrated digital process and design product.

NURBS (Non-uniform rational B-splines) surfaces are the standard freeform representation in computer- aided design (cad) applications. Rendering NURBS surfaces accurately while they are interactively manipulated and deformed is a challenging task. In order to achieve it, the elimination from pipeline in early stages of back-facing surfaces or surface pieces is a key advantage. Furthermore, an effective interactive manipulation implies that all the culling computations should be performed for each frame, facing the possibility of fast changes in occlusion information. In this paper, different interactive culling strategies for NURBS surfaces are presented and analyzed. these culling techniques are based on the exploitation of the geometric properties presented in a NURBS surface, that allow easily to find bounds for it in screen space for each frame. Furthermore, the culling overhead for our proposals is small compared to the computational saving, outperforming a proposal without culling. An implementation of these strategies using current GPUs is presented, achieving real-time and interactive rendering rates of complex parametric models. © Copyright 2016 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. As the computer aided design becomes widely used, the copyright violation of two-dimensional cad engineering graphics urgently needs to be studied. But the current watermarking algorithms have many flaws such as lack of robustness, watermark capacity limitation, and so on. A new algorithm which based on DCT transformation and chaos system is proposed in this paper. the algorithm adopts DCT in watermark preprocessing to reduce the watermark information redundancy, and then classifies the entities of their handles through the chaos system to ensure the security of watermark. the watermark is embedded by modifying entity's line width slightly utilizing HVS characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has good imperceptibility;it's robust against operations such as translation, rotation, scaling, entity addition/deletion and combination of these attacks. the algorithm embeds the meaningful image into 2D cad engineering graphic;it's useful in practical applications. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
