In the design of recent systems, I have advanced techniques that position graphic synthesis methods in the context of solo, improvisational performance. Here, the primary interfaces for musical action are prepared works on paper, scanned by digital video cameras which in turn pass image data on to software for analysis and interpretation as sound synthesis and signal processing procedures. the focus of this paper is on one of these techniques, a process I describe as graphic waveshaping. A discussion of graphic waveshaping in basic form and as utilized in my performance work, Impellent, is offered. In the latter case, the performer’s objective is to guide the interpretation of images as sound, constantly tuning and retuning the conversion while selecting and scanning images from a large catalog. Due to the erratic nature of the system and the precondition that image to sound relationships are unfixed, the performance situation is replete with the discovery of new sounds and the circumstances that bring them into play. © 2013, Steering Committee of the international conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. this book contains the papers presented at the 13th international Workshop on Field Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL) held on September 1–3, 2003. the conference was hosted by the Institute for Systems and computer Engineering-Research and Development of Lisbon (INESC-ID) and the Depa- ment of Electrical and computer Engineering of the IST-Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. the FPL series of conferences was founded in 1991 at Oxford University (UK), and has been held annually since: in Oxford (3 times), Vienna, Prague, Darmstadt,London,Tallinn,Glasgow,Villach,*** together academic researchers, industrial experts, users and newcomers in an - formal,welcomingatmospherethatencouragesproductiveexchangeofideasand knowledge between delegates. Exciting advances in ?eld programmable logic show no sign of slowing down. New grounds have been broken in architectures, design techniques, run-time - con?guration, and applications of ?eld programmable devices in several di?erent areas. Many of these innovations are reported in this volume. the size of FPL conferences has grown signi?cantly over the years. FPL in 2002 saw 214 papers submitted, representing an increase of 83% when compared to the year before. the interest and support for FPL in the programmable logic community continued this year with 216 papers submitted. the technical p- gram was assembled from 90 selected regular papers and 56 posters, resulting in this volume of proceedings. the program also included three invited plenary keynote presentations from LSI Logic, Xilinx and cadence, and three industrial tutorials from Altera, Mentor graphics and Dafca.

Tactile graphics are images that use raised surface so that a visually impaired person can feel them. Tactile graphics are necessary to visually impaired students when they study mathematics and science. Since producing tactile graphics are not simple task, an intelligent computer-aided system for assisting the production of tactile graphics is needed. Mathematical graph recognition from printed materials plays an important role to develop such a system. So, this paper focuses on part of a method of mathematical graph recognition. A mathematical graph includes graph elements such as the rays representing the x-axis and the y-axis and the line segments or the curves representing functions or equations. Graph elements are often drawn so that they are overlapped each other. So, this paper discusses a method for extracting graph elements from an element which is drawn by overlapping more than one graph element. the effectiveness of our method is evaluated by a computer experiment.

Tactile graphics are useful for visually impaired students when they study mathematics and science. However, producing tactile graphics are not simple task. An intelligent computer-aided system for assisting the production of tactile graphics is needed. To develop such a system, research on mathematical graph recognition techniques is needed. this paper focuses on a method of mathematical graph recognition. When drawing a mathematical graph, we use not only solid lines, but also use broken lines. this paper describes a method for extracting and classifying broken line elements from mathematical graphs.

Using the language-action perspective proposed by T. Winograd and F. Flores (1986), the author creates a general framework for both systems analysis and its practice. Structured analysis and design technique (SADT), a systems analysis methodology, is augmented using this framework. this work took place on the CONTRACT (commitment negotiation and tracking tool) project. the author includes the experiences of both users and systems analysts during the project, and emphasizes how to develop SADT descriptions with users to represent the richness and complexity of social interactions at work. the resulting software specification is also presented, including how it aided the work of the people who actually helped develop it.< >

Since the 1980's computer aided engineering (CAE) and simulation (CAS) methods are widely used in the car development process. First the focus was set on crash simulation and car body design. Since a few years due to the rapidly increasing complexity of new electronic systems these techniques are applied in the development and test processes of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). there are a lot of motivations, such as cost reduction and safety issues. As a result of these efforts it is possible to reduce the development cycle times and to increase the quality of the products drastically. In this publication the next step in computer aided engineering is taken. the reproduction of a real test drive is described and simulation quality is examined by a vehicle detection algorithm. First an introduction about the motivation for using synthetic generated images for the test of computer vision applications is given. the next section of this paper deals with vehicle detection in general and gives a more detailed introduction to appearance based methods, especially the used Haar-wavelet based approach. the method for the reproduction of a real test drive is described in detail and the application is shown. the results are evaluated by comparing the detection results of classifier between simulation and reality frame by frame. Further the relevant frames of the evaluation are analysed. Finally, a conclusion and outlook about the possible applications and improvements is made.

the ability for teachers to support students in an online learning environment has proven to be very challenging due to the limitations caused by physical distance and asynchronous communication methods. To this end, an educational decision support system is proposed in the form of an interactive dashboard to empower teachers with the ability to access student learning process information along with system's recommendations, in order for them to undertake well-informed educational decisions. this research focuses on a potential design and the tools available to construct such a dashboard.

In this work, we study the factors that influence the efficacy of a proposed computer aided Diagnosis (cad x ) framework for the diagnosis of clustered microcalcifications (MCs) using a large dataset of mammograms containing cases of varying breast density and findings' subtlety. the reported results indicate that the proposed framework performs towards the right direction, as it appears high classification performance (A z =0.909) for specific subsets of cases, while outperforming at the same time the performance of the radiologists who evaluated the same cases. the effect of the initial enhancement of mammograms in the cad x pipeline is then investigated, by applying three different image enhancement techniques on several subsets of mammograms. We observed that for the considered subsets of dense mammograms, a wavelet-based enhancement algorithm outperformed the rest and provided superior classification performance (A z =0.849). We indicate therefore that the density of the breast determines the need of different computational algorithms for the analysis of a mammogram and as a result the a priori knowledge of this factor may be exploited for the optimization of the diagnostic process.
