Consensus algorithms allow a set of nodes to reach an agreement on a quantity of interest. For instance, a consensus algorithm may be used to allow a network of sensors to determine the average value of samples collected by the different sensors. Similarly, a consensus algorithm may also be used by the nodes to synchronize their clocks. Research on consensus algorithms has a long history, with contributions from different research communities, including distributed computing, control systems, and social networks. In this talk, we will discuss two resilient consensus algorithms that'can perform correctly despite the following two types of adversities: (ⅰ) In wireless networks, transmissions are subject to transmission errors, resulting in packet losses. We will discuss how average consensus can be achieved over such lossy links, without explicitly making the links reliable, for instance, via retransmissions, (ⅱ) In a distributed setting, some of the nodes in the network may fail or may be compromised. We will discuss a consensus algorithm that can tolerate Byzantine failures in partially connected networks.

NFC is a wireless technology that allows software to interact with RFID tags and that is increasingly integrated into smartphones and other mobile devices. In this paper, we present MORENA: a middleware that treats NFC-enabled programs as distributed object-oriented programs in which RFID tags are represented as intermittently connected remote objects. We draw inspiration from the ambient-oriented programming paradigm to represent these objects as first-class remote references which only offer asynchronous communication with the tag to which they refer. this allows the programmer to implement mobile applications that read from or write to RFID tags without having to handle every single fault manually and without blocking the entire application during read or write operations. We built MORENA on top of the Android platform and evaluated our abstractions by implementing a representative application running on NFC-enabled Android phones using MORENA. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In this article we present SCORe, a scalable one-copy serializable partial replication protocol. Differently from any other literature proposal, SCORe jointly guarantees the following properties: (i) it is genuine, thus ensuring that only the replicas that maintain data accessed by a transaction are involved in its processing, and (ii) it guarantees that read operations always access consistent snapshots, thanks to a one-copy serializable multiversion scheme, which never aborts read-only transactions and spares them from any (distributed) validation phase. this makes SCORe particularly efficient in presence of read-intensive workloads, as typical of a wide range of real-world applications. We have integrated SCORe into a popular open source distributed data grid and performed a large scale experimental study with well-known benchmarks using both private and public cloud infrastructures. the experimental results demonstrate that SCORe provides stronger consistency guarantees (namely One-Copy Serializability) than existing multiversion partial replication protocols at no additional overhead. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In recent years, Ambient service has attracted attention as a ubiquitous, future intelligence infrastructure. the Ambient service provides service suitable for user needs automatically by making a sensor and a computer cooperate, and gathering and analyzing the information about each user. However, with the Ambient service, in order to manage personal information, various risks, such as an information leakage, are assumed. In this research, about a risk of being assumed with the Ambient service, it analyzes from a viewpoint by the side of service provision and service use, and clarifies the proposed measures. Specifically, risk breakdown structure and the risk matrix which are the typical risk management methods of project management were used. these results extracted 40 factors as a risk factor of the Ambient service. As the main feature of countermeasure, for Risk Transference, a countermeasure, such as preparing a third party's inspection on the service provision side, was proposed. Moreover, for Risk Mitigation, a countermeasure, such as a rule for a new specification corresponding to the Ambient service, was proposed. As mentioned above, the risk management of the Ambient service was proposed in this paper. A future subject is evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed countermeasure.

the adoption of hybrid GPU-CPU nodes in traditional supercomputing platforms such as the Cray-XK6 opens acceleration opportunities for electronic structure calculations in materials science and chemistry applications, where medium-sized generalized eigenvalue problems must be solved many times. these eigenvalue problems are too small to effectively solve on distributed systems, but can benefit from the massive compute performance concentrated on a single node, hybrid GPU-CPU system. However, hybrid systems call for the development of new algorithms that efficiently exploit heterogeneity and massive parallelism of not just GPUs, but of multi/many-core CPUs as well. Addressing these demands, we developed a novel algorithm featuring innovative: Fine grained memory aware tasks, Hybrid execution/scheduling, and Increased computational intensity. the resulting eigensolvers are state-of-the-art in HPC, significantly outperforming existing libraries. We describe the algorithm and analyze its performance impact on applications of interest when different fractions of eigenvectors are needed by the host electronic structure code.

the original contour preserving classification technique was proposed to improve the robustness and weight fault tolerance of a neural network applied with a two-class linearly separable problem. It was recently found to be improving the level of accuracy of two-class classification. this paper presents an augmentation of the original technique to improve the level of accuracy of multi-class classification by better preservation of the shape or distribution model of a multi-class problem. the test results on six real world multi-class datasets from UCI machine learning repository present that the proposed technique supports multi-class data and can improve the level of accuracy of multi-class classification more effectively. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

this paper presents a distributed task allocation method whose strategies are alternatively selected based on the estimated workloads of the local agents. Recent Internet. sensor-network, and cloud computing applications are large-scale and fully-distributed, and thus, require sophisticated multi-agent system technologies to enable a large number of programs and computing resources to be effectively used. To elicit the capabilities of all the agents in a large-scale multi-agent system (LSMAS) in which thousands of agents work concurrently requires a new negotiation strategy for appropriately allocating tasks in a distributed manner. We start by focusing on the contract net protocol (CNP) in LSMAS and then examine the effects of the awardee selection strategies, that is. the task allocation strategies. We will show that probabilistic awardee selections improve the overall performance in specific situations. Next, the mixed strategy in which a number of awardee selections are alternatively used based on the analysis of the bid from the local agents is proposed. Finally, we show that the proposed strategy does not only avoid task concentrations but also reduces the wasted efforts, thus it can considerably improve the performance.

With the functionality of mobile applications ever increasing, designers are often confronted with either the resource limitations of the devices or of the network. As pointed out by recent work, application partitioning between mobile devices and clouds, can be used to solve some of these issues, improving performance and/or battery life. In this paper, we argue that the static decisions made in existing work cannot leverage the full potential of application partitioning. thus, to allow for variations in the execution environment, we have developed a system that dynamically adapts the application partition decisions. the system works by continuously profiling an applications performance and dynamically updating its distributed deployment to accommodate changes in the network bandwidth, devices CPU utilization, and data loads. Using several real applications, we show that our approach provides performance gains as high as 75% over traditional approaches and achieves lower power consumption by a factor close to 45%. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Manipulation, orientation and handling of components, subparts and finished products is an essential element of any industrial process, which attracts substantial portion of resources and infrastructure. Classic manipulation, e.g. robot arms, is not always efficient at the micro-scale and suffers in terms of scaleability. We are proposing an alternative concept of manipulation based on an array of actuators. the proposed system rely on the natural concepts of scaleability and parallelism: ciliary motion and excitable media control. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

the Internet of things (IoT) many be thought of as the availability of physical objects, or devices, on the Internet [1]. Given such an arrangement it is possible to access sensor data and control actuators remotely. Furthermore such data may be combined with data from other sources - e.g. with data that is contained in the Web - or operated on by cloud based services to create applications far richer than can be provided by isolated embedded systems [2,3]. this is the vision of the Internet of things. We present a cloud-compatible open source controller and an extensible API, hereafter referred to as 'IoTCloud', which enables developers to create scalable high performance IoT and sensor-centric applications. the IoTCloud software is written in Java and built on popular open source packages such as Apache Active MQ [4] and JBoss Netty [5]. We present an overview of the IoT Cloud architecture and describe its developer API. Next we introduce the FutureGrid - a geographically distributed and heterogeneous cloud test-bed [6,7] - used in our experiments. Our preliminary results indicate that a distributed cloud infrastructure like the FutureGrid coupled with our flexible IoTCloud framework is an environment suitable for the study and development of IoT and sensor-centric applications. We also report on our initial study of certain measured characteristics of an IoTCloud application running on the FutureGrid. We conclude by inviting interested parties to use the IoTCloud to create their own IoT applications or contribute to its further development. © 2012 IEEE.
