this book presents the latest research findings, as well as innovative theoretical and practical research results, methods and development techniques related to P2P, grid, cloud and Internet computing. It also reveals the synergies among such large scale computing paradigms. P2P, Grid, Cloud and Internet computing technologies have rapidly become established as breakthrough paradigms for solving complex problems by enabling aggregation and sharing of an increasing variety of distributed computational resources on a large scale. Grid computing originated as a paradigm for high-performance computing, offering an alternative to expensive supercomputers through different forms of large-scale distributed computing. P2P computing emerged as a new paradigm following on from client-server and web-based computing and has proved useful in the development of social networking, B2B (Business to Business), B2C (Business to Consumer), B2G (Business to Government), and B2E (Business to Employee). Cloud computing has been described as a computing paradigm where the boundaries of computing are determined by economic rationale rather than technical limits. Cloud computing has fast become the computing paradigm with applicability and adoption in all domains and providing utility computing at large scale. Lastly, Internet computing is the basis of any large-scale distributed computing paradigm; it has very quickly developed into a vast and flourishing field with enormous impact on todays information societies and serving as a universal platform comprising a large variety of computing forms such as grid, P2P, cloud and mobile computing.

In this paper, we introduce a distributed algorithm to compute the Čech complex. this algorithm is aimed at solving the coverage problems in self organized wireless networks. the complexity to compute the minimal Čech complex that gives information about coverage and connectivity of the network is O(n 2), where n is the average number of neighbors of each cell. An application based on the distributed computation of the Čech complex, which is aimed at optimizing the wireless network for energy saving, is also proposed. this application also has polynomial complexity. the performance of the proposed algorithm and its application are evaluated. the simulation results show that the distributed computation of the Čech complex provides a consistent outcome with the one obtained by the centralized computation that is introduced in [6], while requires a much shorter calculation time. the optimized coverage saves 65% of the total transmission power, while also keeps the maximal coverage for the network. © 2017 IEEE.

the IEEE802.15.4e standard for low power wireless sensor networks defines a new mode called Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) as Medium Access Control (MAC). TSCH allows highly efficient deterministic time-frequency schedules that are built and maintained by the 6TiSCH operation sublayer (6top). In this paper, we propose a solution to limit the allocation of identical cells to co-located pair of nodes by distributed TSCH scheduling algorithms. It consists of making nodes able to overhear past cell negotiations exchanged in shared cells by their neighbors and prevent the nodes from reusing already assigned cells in future allocations. Our mechanism has been tested through simulations that show a significant improvement with respect to random scheduling algorithms.

the remote monitoring and control of machines are essential in industrial environments. Emerging communication technologies such as Web of things and Machine to Machine Communication can meet this demand for automation in Industry 4.0. this paper aims to introduce a solution for continuous and remote monitoring of electrical quantities in smart industrial environments with three-phase systems. the proposed solution uses a service-oriented architecture and makes use of a Smart Gateway, RESTful web services, and cloud computing. the solution was integrated with a real case study and evaluated by software testing. the results obtained demonstrate the feasibility of the solution, and the accuracy of measurements persisted in the cloud.

Popularity of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is increasing day a day where hundreds or thousands of applications are explored. In most of such applications, the need of gathering data periodically about the monitored environment beside the limited, generally irreplaceable, power sensor sources make energy conservation and big data gathering reduction two fundamental challenges in such networks. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive distributed Data Gathering (ADiDaG) technique for saving energy in periodic WSN applications. ADiDaG works into rounds where each round consists of three phases: data gathering, sampling decision, and transmission. these phases respectively use Map reduce, longest common subsequence similarity and grouping approach in order to search data redundancy and adapt sensor sampling rate at each round. the performance of ADiDaG is evaluated based on both simulation and experimentations where the obtained results show significant energy savings and high accurate data gathering compared to existing approaches. © 2017 IEEE.

Industrial IoT networks are typically used for monitoring systems and supporting control loops, as well as for movement detection systems, process control and factory automation. To this end, data generated by monitoring IoT devices are collected, elaborated and sent to controllers and actuators. the routing of data from IoT sensors to actuators is an integral part of any large-scale industrial network for maintaining critical delay requirements. Centralised schemes are typically used, whereby data are transferred to a central network controller, from where they are accessed by any other node requiring them. this may result in significant overheads and suboptimal resource consumption. In this paper, we propose a distributed, cooperative Data Management Layer (DML), whereby nodes cooperate to store data within the network. the DML is decoupled yet interacts with the underlying Network Plane. Specifically, given a set of data, the sets of nodes generating and requesting them, and a maximum access delay that requesting nodes can tolerate, the DML efficiently identifies a limited set of proxies in the network where data are stored. Given the mentioned constraints, we investigate the (computationally difficult) problem of finding which network nodes to select as proxies and we propose a simple method to address it. We demonstrate that the proposed method (i) guarantees that access delay stays below the given threshold, and (ii) significantly outperforms centralised and even distributed approaches, both in terms of access latency and in terms of maximum latency guarantees.

Connectivity in vehicular networks is continuously changing due to high mobility of vehicles, causing rapid changes in the network topology. this has a direct negative impact on the throughput and packet transmission delay. Many algorithms and approaches have been proposed to address this problem. However, most of them are not practical due to their dependence on a centralized infrastructure, which are attributed with high cost for installation and maintenance. Vehicular networks are composed of all types of vehicles including autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we propose addressing the problem of VANET connectivity through controlling the routes and speed of autonomous vehicles according to the density and speed of non-autonomous vehicles. this is achieved through a decentralized cooperative game theory approach that provides a balance between autonomous vehicles' trip duration, and enhancements to the VANET connectivity. We evaluate our proposed approach through extensive simulations using real traffic data, and observe substantial enhancements of up to 46% in the network connectivity using our approach.

MPEG has recently proposed Server and Network Assisted Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (SAND-DASH) for video streaming over the Internet. In contrast to the purely client-based video streaming in which each client makes its own decision to adjust its bitrate, SAND-DASH enables a group of simultaneous clients to select their bitrates in a coordinated fashion in order to improve resource utilization and quality of experience. In this paper, we study the performance of such an adaptation strategy compared to the traditional approach with large number of clients having mobile Internet access. We propose a multi-servers multi-coordinators (MSs-MCs) framework to model groups of remote clients accessing video content replicated to spatially distributed edge servers. We then formulate an optimization problem to maximize jointly the QoE of individual clients, proportional fairness in allocating the limited resources of base stations as well as balancing the utilized resources among multiple serves. We then present an efficient heuristic-based solution to the problem and perform simulations in order to explore parameter space of the scheme as well as to compare the performance to purely client-based DASH.

DDoS attack is one of the major concerns for network and cloud service providers, due to its substantial impact on revenue/cost and especially on their reputation. Also, network administrators are looking for solutions to manage voluminous data traffic. SDN is an emerging networking paradigm that provides a flexible network management. Hence, SDN is being widely adopted for wired, wireless, and mobile networks. Apart from a single point of failure (the controller), an attacker can target SDN at various levels by DDoS attacks. Existing solutions either focus on a particular attack type or require cumbersome alterations in SDN infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive, yet effective and lightweight approach to detect various fundamentally different DDoS attacks in SDN. Our approach relies on sequential analysis. We employ a non-parametric change point detection technique called Cumulative Sum (CuSum). Our framework also includes an adaptive threshold scheme that adapts with the changing traffic pattern. Additionally, our framework can be tuned to suffice critical security requirements such as high detection rate and low false alarm rate. We evaluated the effectiveness of our solution using CAIDA Internet traces as well as DARPA intrusion detection evaluation dataset. Our results confirm the effectiveness of our mechanism. In particular, average false alarm rate in our experiments was under 11.64%. On average, our method is able to detect DDoS attacks within 4.15 seconds.

After the occurrence of a disaster one of the main needs for the rescue teams and volunteer helpers is a functional communication infrastructure even during the first hours. the disaster recovery system (DRS) originally presented by us in a previous work [1] is based on an IEEE 802.11s wireless mesh network which is set up by non damaged legacy, mesh capable and battery powered devices still available in the disaster region. For lifetime enhancement, which is a key challenge for the proposed DRS based on battery powered devices, a distributed algorithm was proposed which enhances the lifetime of such a system by an approach which allows to shut down non necessary nodes and to keep them for a later usage while still keeping network connectivity. A simulation based proof of concept of this algorithm has been given in [1], however, employing a rather high level of abstraction. In this paper we evaluate the DRS network performance using a full implementation of the distributed algorithm within the simulation and which is based on alternating sleep and awake states for each individual node. Additionally, the algorithm is extended by a novel approach whereby the decision when a node changes its state from sleep to awake or vice-versa is based on the number of neighbors of the corresponding node, allowing for a much simpler implementation on the individual mesh nodes. the achievable lifetime enhancement first is evaluated through a Monte-Carlo simulation. Finally, the network performance achievable with the proposed lifetime enhancement algorithm for disaster recovery systems (LEA-DRS) is validated by a network simulation in ns-3 evaluating a Voice over IP connection between two nodes (e.g. between two rescuers).
