this paper outlines the design and implementation of an exergame developed under the strategic Italian CNR project SMILER (Serious gaMes in chILdren with nEurological or Respiratory disorders). the project aims at investigating how Serious Games (SG) can enhance the health conditions of young people with chronic diseases, specifically targeting two categories: individuals with Down Syndrome and those with Asthma. the SG employs a narrative strategy within an immersive, interactive setup. the child’s movements are captured and translated into actions performed by an in-game avatar, who is central to the story. Additionally, a wristband continuously monitors the child’s physiological data, ensuring they remain within the aerobic zone. In this document, the game’s architectural modules and design decisions are described, along with introducing the experimental plan to explore the game’s impact on transcriptome profiling (CTRA) gene patterns and neuropsychological outcomes through an upcoming pilot study. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Cloud computing covers a wide range of applications, from online services for the end user. It becomes the new trends for most organizations to handle their business IT units. Services provided are becoming flexible because the resources and processing power available to each can be adjusted on the fly to meet changes in need [6]. However, infrastructures deployed on a cloud computing environment may induce significant performance penalties for the demanding computing workload. In our doctoral research, we aim to study, analyze, evaluate and improve performance in cloud computing environment based on different criteria. To achieve the thesis objectives, a research performed is based on a quantitative analysis of repeatable empirical experiment. © 2015 IEEE.

Dragonfly topologies have gathered great interest as one of the most promising interconnection patterns for the networks at the core of HPC clusters. In this paper, we configure several simulated InfiniBand-based clusters with a Dragonfly topology, and we analyze the performance in these configurations of the routing engines included in the latest release of the InfiniBand Subnet Manager (OpenSM v3.3.19). © 2015 IEEE.

Applying suitable application models is essential to achieve efficient execution of the applications, effective development process and assure application portability and reusability. We observe that execution environments and the cloud environment in particular, lack of tools that would make it more available from a programmer perspective. Complexity and variety of libraries and authentication methods do not correspond with simplistic functionality of those services. We approach this issue at several fields - workflow systems, domain specific languages and cloud computing. Our work focus on two points, optimizing existing application models by supplementing them with additional tools and providing new features, and develop new models that are based on our research on applications in the cloud environment. © 2015 IEEE.

this talk focuses on discussing a personal research experience through different, and, in principle, disconnected research topics. this paper discusses on non-stationary performance evaluation and dynamic modeling of cloud computing environments. In computer systems, dynamic effects results from the filling of buffers, event-handling delays, non-deterministic I/O response times, network latency, among other factors. While computer systems performance evaluation under stationary workloads have met the needs of many engineering problems, new challenges arise as the deployment of increasingly complex and large-scale distributed systems becomes commonplace. One key aspect of this discussion is that transient analysis models how the system reacts to changes in the workload and may reveal that the resources necessary to support a high steady-state workload may not be sufficient to handle a small, but sudden, workload change, even of intensity far smaller than that supported by the system's stationary capacity. this article elaborates on these issues under a control-theoretical approach. © 2015 IEEE.

there are several approaches for computing the inverse of a dense square matrix, say A, namely Gaussian elimination, block wise inversion, and LU factorization (LUF). the latter is used in mathematical software libraries such as SCALAPACK, PBLAS and MATLAB. the inversion routine in SCALAPACK library (called PDGETRI) consists, once the two factors L and U are known (where A=LU), in first inverting U (PDGETRF) then solving a triangular matrix system giving A(-1). A symmetric way consists in first inverting L, then solving a matrix system giving A(-1). Alternatively, one could compute the inverses of both U and L, then their product and get A(-1). On the other hand, the Strassen fast matrix inversion algorithm is known as an efficient alternative for solving our problem. We propose in this paper a series of different versions for parallel dense matrix inversion based on the 'Divide and Conquer' paradigm. A theoretical performance study permits to establish an accurate comparison between the designed algorithms. We achieved a series of experiments that permit to validate the contribution and lead to efficient performances obtained for large matrix sizes i.e. up to 40% faster than SCALAPACK.

In this paper we would like to share our experience for transforming a parallel code for a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) problem into a parallel version for the RedisDG workflow engine. this system is able to capture heterogeneous and highly dynamic environments, thanks to opportunistic scheduling strategies. We show how to move to the field of "HPC as a Service" in order to use heterogeneous platforms. We mainly explain, through the CFD use case, how to transform the parallel code and we exhibit challenges to 'unfold' the task graph dynamically in order to improve the overall performance (in a broad sense) of the workflow engine. We discuss in particular of the impact on the workflow engine of such dynamic feature. this paper states that new models for high performance computing are possible, under the condition we revisit our mind in the direction of the potential of new paradigms such as cloud, edge computing.

Future generation supercomputers will be a hundred times faster than today's leaders of the Top 500 while reaching the exascale mark. It is predicted that this performance gain in terms of CPU power will be achieved by a shift in the ratio of compute nodes to cores per node. the amount of nodes will not grow significantly compared to today's systems, instead they will be built by using many-core CPUs holding more than hundreds of cores resulting in a widening gap between compute power and I/O performance [1]. Four key challenges of future exascale systems have been identified by previous studies that must be coped with when designing them: energy and power, memory and storage, concurrency and locality, and resiliency [2].
