Assessment of damage state of concrete structures after earthquakes is often based on the human empirical visual inspection. Crack distribution, referred to as crack pattern, is a common damage assessment index along with crack width and drift ratio. Fractal analysis has been used to quantify the crack pattern on the surface of concrete components. this paper focuses on the quantification of crack patterns through image analysis and aims to develop an assessment model in the form of a relationship between fractal dimension and transient drift for concrete beams. A total of eleven concrete beams were tested under half-cyclic loading to investigate the usefulness of fractal analysis in damage assessment for concrete beams, and the test results are used to calibrate the proposed model. the box-counting algorithm is adopted for the fractal analysis in this study. the test results reveal that fractal dimension is an efficient image-based indicator of damage degree of concrete beams and correlates strongly with the drift and aspect ratio of the beams. To verify efficiency of quantitative assessment based on fractal dimension, the correlation between fractal dimension and relative stiffness loss, an overall damage index measuring both external and internal damage, are examined. © 2024 IEEE.

the random forest, a machine learning technique, offers several preferable features that have drawn the interest and focus of researchers. In practically applying the random forest, we found that the training data containing many examples similar to each other degraded the quality of the importance scores. To overcome this harmful effect, we have proposed a method that assigns weight values to the training data. Our experimental results showed that the quality decline of the importance scores could be resolved by considering the weight values determined by the weighting method in the training of the random forest. It turned out, however, that this harmful effect and the effectiveness of the weighting method in overcoming it could only be confirmed on a specified task. Although the main purpose of machine learning techniques is to obtain a good approximation of the target function, the importance scores are often used to extract information from the given data. From what we can see, the degradation in the quality of the importance scores is not yet widely known. In this study we attempted to reveal the conditions under which this harmful effect occurs. We confirmed that the weighting approach works well even in other problems. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we modify the precedent method to assign commuting option to each worker in synthetic populations. Synthetic population is a data with household compositions in a specific community. Based on the relations between residential place and workplace, we try to assign commuting options such as train, bus, automobile, motorcycle, bicycle and walk. Since the previous method considered only trains as commuting option using the ratio of workers who commute their working place by train, we include the ratio of workers who commute by their automobiles in this paper. Using publicly released statistics about commuting options in each city, we successfully assign appropriate commuting options to each worker. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, the number of hemiplegia patients due to stroke has been increasing. Scaling for Contraversive Pushing (SCP) is a method to evaluate the severity of the stroke. In this evaluation method, it is important to quantify the body axis tilt numerically. In this study, we measured and analyzed the Side Tilt Angle of the upper body posture using an optical motion analyzer, and aimed to visualize the severity of postural localization disorder caused by body axis tilt. First, an angular accuracy experiment I was conducted for a parameter indicating Side Tilt Angel that was set. then, an experiment II was conducted to compare the posture of a normal subject with eyes open and eyes closed. the error of Side Tilt Angle accuracy was within ±5.0 [degrees], and the standard deviation was within ±1.0 [degrees]. the results of the comparison experiment showed that no changes occurred between open and closed eye postures for the healthy subjects. In addition, a program was developed to separate the coordinates that were switched when two persons were captured, enabling the system to separate them. the development of this system is expected to increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation for hemiplegia. © 2024 IEEE.

this paper proposes an identification system for sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) using images of their flukes as input to the system. the proposed system consists of two parts: one part extracts the region of the fluke to be identified from the images taken by a digital camera, the other part identifies the whale from its fluke image. Deep learning methods called deeplabv3 and CascadePSPNet are used to extract the fluke area from the input image, and metric learning using the Adacos loss function constructs an identification model. Experimental results show that high identification accuracies (top-I and top-5 accuracies) are achieved by the proposed system. © 2024 IEEE.

Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (iNPH) is characterized by excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the cerebral ventricles, leading to symptoms such as gait disturbances, cognitive impairments, and urinary incontinence. Shunt surgery can significantly improve these symptoms. Conversely, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) presents similar symptoms but lacks effective treatment options, making accurate differentiation crucial. Traditional methods, which rely on visual assessment of brain MRI, can be challenging without a specialist and are prone to intra- and inter-observer variability. this study proposes an automated approach using a Multi-head Attention Convolutional Neural Network (MA-CNN) with Diversify-Loss to differentiate iNPH from PSP. the proposed method was validated on 39 iNPH and 39 PSP subjects and achieved an accuracy of 0.962 and an Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.978, significantly outperforming both the conventional CNN (accuracy of 0.822 and AUC of 0.936) and the method without Diversify-Loss (accuracy of 0.911 and AUC of 0.966). these results indicate that automated differentiation is feasible and that attention maps coupled with Diversify-Loss significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

With the rapid development of technology, intelligent substation detection robots are becoming a new favorite in the industry. It not only improves the detection efficiency of the substation, but also improves the detection accuracy. At the same time, the integration of multiple advanced technologies endows these robots with unique functions and characteristics. Substation is an important component of the power system, and its working state directly affects the stability of power supply. Traditional, usually manual inspection methods are not only inefficient but also prone to errors. the emergence of intelligent inspection robots has completely changed the inspection method of substations, allowing for large-scale inspections in a short period of time, with much higher accuracy than manual operations. the total number of surveyed data within 24 hours for the intelligent inspection robot scene recognition using convolutional neural networks is 198, with only 2 unmeasured data. However, it can be seen that the intelligent inspection robot scene recognition using convolutional neural networks can quickly and accurately recognize. © 2024 IEEE.

Cancer is currently the leading cause of death in Japan, and the number of cancer patients is increasing every year. the number of patients with bone metastases from cancer is also increasing. the spine is a common site of bone metastasis, and cancer metastasis to the spine can cause serious symptoms such as hypercalcaemia and nerve paralysis due to spinal cord compression. As a result, it can affect patients' quality of life. Early detection and treatment of bone metastases is therefore important. To analyse the image information, CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) is introduced in image registration, which is obtained by temporal subtraction technique. One of them is CT (Computed Tomography) image-based registration technique by taken at different times of the same subject and performs subtraction to enhance changes in the lesion over time. In this approach, the registration of the same slice is important for the generation of temporal subtraction image. In this paper, we propose a method to register both images obtained different time series based on SuperPoint algorithm incorporated CBAM (Convolutional Block Attention Module) as a method to select the same slice and register the spinal region on the CT image. © 2024 IEEE.

In modern society, object detection tasks have become extremely important due to their numerous applications in fields such as autonomous driving, surveillance, and healthcare. Real-time detection is particularly crucial for many applications. However, with the advancements in deep learning-based object detection methods, high performance often comes with high computational resource requirements, posing challenges for real-time monitoring, especially on resource-constrained devices. To address this issue, we study model compression using both transfer learning (TL) and knowledge distillation (KD). Specifically, we use the YOLOv5n model as a test case to show the basic idea for improving the performance of a small student model using a larger dataset for TL and a larger model for KD. As for KD, we further investigate feature-based and output-based KD. Experimental results show that the small student model can be improved significantly using TL and KD, with the mean Average Precision (mAP0.5) being increased by 13.28% compared to the baseline model. these results demonstrate the effectiveness of TL and KD in achieving high detection performance while reducing computational demands, making them suitable for various real-world applications. © 2024 IEEE.

this paper focuses on the event-triggered control problem for two-dimensional (2-D) discrete-time switched systems represented by both the Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space model. the existence of 2-D properties brings many difficulties to the selection of states with transport. Unlike existing event-triggered generators, this paper takes advantage of the special characteristics of 2-D switched systems by splitting the system state into 'horizontal' and 'vertical' states. the segmented state is then transmitted at some 'necessary' two-dimensional moments, which will further reduce the amount of transmitted data. Next, a state feedback controller consisting of transferred horizontal and vertical states is designed corresponding to the event-triggered generator. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and improvement of the proposed approach through an example. © 2023 IEEE.
