Digital circuit configuration data can be optimized in the design space using genetic algorithms (GA). Further development of Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) has been made to better express data on circuit configuration. In order to realize digital circuits with the potential for self-repair with the least amount of resources, the embryonic fabric architecture has recently arisen. In this study, PHsClone (parallel Half-Sibling and Clone) GA is designed and implemented for evolving configuration data in CGP format for digital circuits built on embryonic fabric architecture. Configuration data or prospective circuit solutions can be generated more quickly using parallel processing on an FPGA. the Xilinx Virtex-7 is used to implement the planned PHsClone GA architecture. the PHsClone technique was validated using well-known benchmark circuits, including a safe mode detection circuit used in flight avionics, a 1-bit adder, a 2-bit comparator for creating 4-bit adder and 8-bit comparator circuits. According to the simulation results, four concurrent PHsClone GA executions (four parallel threads) achieve convergence for the safe mode detection circuit 37 times quicker than a single HsClone GA, 10 times faster for a 1-bit adder, and 3 times faster for a 2-bit comparator. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

As data security in public clouds attracts more attention and concerns, researchers and practitioners have proposed techniques to secure cloud computing. Confidential computing (CC) is a compelling approach that guarantees both privacy and integrity of data and code in public clouds. In this paper, we first survey the status of CC in today's commercialized public clouds, including the cloud CC abstractions, infrastructures, metrics, third-party service vendors, and real-world cloud use cases. We also discover the limitations such as re-programming efforts, extra cost, limited availability, etc. We further take a step forward to prospect CC in the joint cloud scenario. We finally showcase the challenges of realizing a secure joint cloud and propose possible solutions.

In order to develop a high-performance computing system, not only a high-performance processor and accelerator, but also the system software for optimizing system performance and providing an efficient programming environment is essential. We are developing a device driver for a new parallel computing accelerator (called XPU). the driver aims to support OpenCL and control the XPU. As a first step, we developed XPU driver emulator (XDE) based on the XPU simulator to validate the design of the XPU hardware and device driver prior to hardware manufacturing. XDE supports OpenCL and offloads parallel computations to XPU simulator. XDE allows early development of runtime and compiler. this paper presents the architecture, functions, and operational flow of the XDE. this provides an opportunity to understand the XPU device driver to be developed in the future and technical considerations for the co-designing of hardware and system software. © 2022 IEEE.

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is widely used today for both positioning and timing purposes. Many distinct receiver chips are available off-the-shelf, each tailored to match various applications' requirements. Being implemented as Application-Specific Integrated Circuits, these chips provide good performance and low energy consumption but must be treated as "black boxes" by customers. this prevents modification, research in GNSS processing chain enhancement (e.g., application of Approximate Computing techniques), and design-space exploration for finding the optimal receiver implementation per each use case. In this paper, we review the development of SyDR, an open-source Software-Defined Radio oriented towards benchmarking of GNSS algorithms. Specifically, our goal is to integrate certain components of the GNSS processing chain in a Field-Programmable Gate Array and manage their operation with a Python program using the Xilinx PYNQ flow. We present the early steps of converting parts of SyDR to C, which will be later converted to Hardware Description Language descriptions using High-Level Synthesis. We demonstrate successful conversion of the tracking process and discuss benefits and drawbacks arising thereof, before outlining next steps in preparation for hardware implementation.

De novo assembly of genomes for which there is no reference, is essential for novel species discovery and metagenomics. In this work, we accelerate two key performance bottlenecks of DBG-based assembly, graph construction and graph traversal, with a near-data processing (NDP) architecture based on 3D-stacking. the proposed framework distributes key operations across NDP cores to exploit a high degree of parallelism and high memory bandwidth. We propose several optimizations based on domain-specific properties to improve the performance of our design. We integrate the proposed techniques into an existing DBG assembly tool, and our simulation-based evaluation shows that the proposed NDP implementation can improve the performance of graph construction by 33x and traversal by 16x compared to the state-of-the-art.

Pattern mining has been more important in the solution of various data mining jobs over the years. the extraction of common patterns was the primary focus of pattern mining research for a long period of time, with the mining of rare patterns being neglected. Rare pattern mining is becoming more popular as researchers recognize the importance of rare patterns. the hyper-linked data structure is suitable to store sparse data set in the main memory and enables dynamic adjustment of links during the mining process using recursion. However, a sequential approach to discovering rare patterns from a large dataset is inefficient. Hence a CUDA-based parallel algorithm has been implemented to discover rare itemsets. the algorithm is tested using dense and sparse datasets on a GPU. the GPU initialization time affects the time taken to discover rare itemsets. the time taken to transfer data between CPU and GPU is significantly large and the parallel implementation of an algorithm with a recursive approach is unsuitable. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
