We introduce an automated parameterized verification method for fault-tolerant distributed algorithms (FTDA). FTDAs are parameterized by both the number of processes and the assumed maximum number of faults. At the center of our technique is a parametric interval abstraction (PIA) where the interval boundaries are arithmetic expressions over parameters. Using PIA for both data abstraction and a new form of counter abstraction, we reduce the parameterized problem to finite-state model checking. We demonstrate the practical feasibility of our method by verifying safety and liveness of several fault-tolerant broadcasting algorithms, and finding counter examples in the case where there are more faults than the FTDA was designed for.

this paper presents object-oriented programming for topology design of trusses by a genetic algorithm (GA). When a GA is used to design a truss structure, intermediate solutions during the evolution process are always evaluated against the employed design code by the finite element method. this design process by a GA requires a computer program that can perform finite element analysis and also has the necessary information of the employed design code and standard. Efficient implementation of this kind of program requires excellent data structuring. In this study, the object-oriented programming concept is used to design program structures for topology design of trusses by a GA. the proposed structures use classes to represent design codes and standards. the structures also include classes of truss design elements that are created by combining the ordinary truss finite elements with the necessary design information via class inheritance. the truss-element objects of these derived classes are therefore capable of knowing whether they satisfy the design constraints or not. this significantly improves the implementation of GAs for design of trusses.

In applications such as market analysis, it is of great interest to product manufacturers to have their products ranked as highly as possible for a significant number of customers. However, customer preferences change over time, and product manufacturers are interested in monitoring the evolution of the popularity of their products, in order to discover those products that are consistently highly ranked. To take into account the temporal dimension, we define the continuous influential query and present algorithms for efficient processing and retrieval of continuous influential data objects. Furthermore, our algorithms support incremental retrieval of the next continuous influential data object in a natural way. To evaluate the performance of our algorithms, we conduct a detailed experimental study for various setups. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In-network indexing is a challenging problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), particularly when sensor nodes are mobile. In the past, several indexing structures have been proposed for WSNs for answering in-network queries, however, their maintenance efficiency in the presence of mobile nodes is relatively less understood. Assuming that mobility of the nodes is driven by an underlying mobility control algorithm or application, we present a novel distributed protocol for efficient maintenance of distributed hierarchical indexing structures. the proposed protocol is generic, in the sense that it is applicable to any hierarchical indexing structure that uses binary space partitioning (BSP), such as k-d trees, Quadtrees and Octrees. It is based on locally expanding and shrinking convex regions such that update costs are minimized. Based on SIDnet-SWANS simulator, our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol under different mobility models, mobility speeds, and query streams. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Distributed, large-scale, enterprise applications are commonly supported in multi-tier data-center environments. In this paper, we study a scheduling problem for sharing CPU time in a cluster of servers among a number of enterprise customers. Such sharing is typically mandated by service differentiation requirements and QoS guarantees. Our main contribution is the formal definition of a CPU allocation/scheduling problem with respect to QoS quarantees and evaluation of scheduling policies that address the following design criteria: they have provable performance, they do not require a priori knowledge of service statistics and their overhead is adjustable. We provide the necessary mathematical framework for policies that satisfy the above criteria and evaluate proposed algorithms via theoretical analysis and extensive simulations.

Array DBMSs extend the set of supported data structures in databases with (potentially large) multi-dimensional arrays. this information category actually comprises a core data structure in many scientific applications. When it comes to Petabyte archives, storage costs prohibit importing (i.e., copying) such data into a database. therefore, in-situ processing of database queries is required, that is: evaluating queries on the original files, without previous insertion into the database. We have implemented such an in-situ feature for the rasdaman Array DBMS. In this demonstration, we show with rasdaman how query processing in array databases can simultaneously rely on arrays stored in the database - as usual - and in operating system files, like preexisting archives. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

data-driven fault diagnosis doesn't depend upon the precise model of an industrial process, however, the quality of the process data set has an important effect on its result. As a quite common phenomenon, the process data sets with missing data usually reduce the performance of data based algorithms. In this paper, a novel data-driven fault detection method based on sparse decomposition is proposed to deal with the issue of missing data. In our approach, the K-SVD and OMP algorithms are used to learn the sparse representation model of the training data and to conduct the sparse decomposition of the testing data, respectively. Compared to the traditional fault detection method, PCA, our sparse decomposition based method outperforms PCA with missing data. At last, simulation experiments verify our result. © IFAC.

this paper presents a Lexicon-Grammar based method for automatic extraction of spatial relations from Italian non-structured data. We used the software Nooj to build sophisticated local grammars and electronic dictionaries associated with the lexicon-grammar classes of the Italian intransitive spatial verbs (i.e. 234 verbal entries) and we applied them to the Italian text Il Codice da Vinci ('the Da Vinci Code', by Dan Brown) in order to parse the spatial predicate-arguments structures. In addition, Nooj allowed us to automatically annotate (in XML format) the words (or the sequence of words) that in each sentence (S) of the text play the 'spatial roles' of Figure (F), Motion (M) and Ground (G). Finally the results of the experiment and the evaluation of this method will be discussed. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2013.
