Many wireless sensor networks rely on synchronization protocols to correlate measurements on different nodes. In order to save power in these applications, we consider two stages for the nodes as synchronization timeslot and the synchronous task that can run on different clock frequencies. Implemented on a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) chip, decreasing the clock frequency from 16 MHz to 1 MHz results in 2x and 7.5x reduction in crystal oscillator and timer run currents, respectively. Experimental results show that when the synchronization timeslot runs on the 16 MHz clock and then the clock frequency reduces to 1 MHz for executing the task, synchronization accuracies are similar to the case where only the high frequency clock is used.

the deployment of embedded sensing devices on croplands and pastures is an enabling element for precision agriculture applications. Changing conditions (e.g., different crops being grown), however, may require the occasional reconfiguration of the resulting networks of wireless sensors, e.g., to modify data reporting rates or synchronize internal clocks. In this demo we showcase an opportunistic broadcast channel to forward such configuration messages to embedded systems. the transmitting station is realized by means of an electric fence energizer, a device frequently utilized in agricultural settings. On the receiver side, only little hardware efforts are required to capture the high-voltage pulses and decode transmitted configuration messages.

We study how knowledge of a moving object's path can be used to select sensors in a network that maximize the coverage of its path. We propose a mobility model that combines the shortest path between two points with random movement. Given the mobility model, we have different knowledge levels in terms of knowing nothing, the start, destination, movement model, and the whole path. We present a framework to assign weights to points on the movement grid based on the knowledge level and to greedily select sensors to maximize weighted coverage of the grid. We show in simulations of random movement that knowing more information generally has better performance, but for certain levels of knowledge, this decreases as the randomness increases. We also find that it is possible to obtain the maximum coverage by assuming the target follows the shortest path when the randomness is below a certain threshold. We verified these results on real human mobility traces.

distributed diffusion is a powerful algorithm for multi-task state estimation which enables networked agents to interact with neighbors to process input data and diffuse information across the network. Compared to a centralized approach, diffusion offers multiple advantages that include robustness to node and link failures. In this paper, we consider distributed diffusion for multi-task estimation where networked agents must estimate distinct but correlated states of interest by processing streaming data. By exploiting the adaptive weights used for diffusing information, we develop attack models that drive normal agents to converge to states selected by the attacker. the attack models can be used for both stationary and non-stationary state estimation. In addition, we develop a resilient distributed diffusion algorithm under the assumption that the number of compromised nodes in the neighborhood of each normal node is bounded by F and we show that resilience may be obtained at the cost of performance degradation. Finally, we evaluate the proposed attack models and resilient distributed diffusion algorithm using stationary and non-stationary multi-target localization.

Since years the amount of medical incidents on passenger flights is increasing. Beside the personal stress and strains for concerned passenger, every incident leads to huge costs for the specific airline. To avoid both, the SCARAB(2) project proposes to monitor passenger's health condition to identify imminent risk of health issues. therefore, SCARAB(2) faces the challenge of using Ballistocardiography (BCG) in passenger planes and noisy environments respectively. With accelerometer arrays mounted on the seats, cardiac signals of each passenger can be recorded. these data are collected non-invasive while several parameters can be measured, e.g. respiratory rate, heart rate, etc. but even complex parameters like blood pressure can be derived. However, the acceleration of BCG signals is rather small and the shaking and vibrating (noisy) environment of planes leads to strong requirements on hardware, signal processing and meaningful evaluations.

We consider the problem of finding large scale mobility patterns. A common challenge in mobility tracking systems is that large quantity of data is spread out spatially and temporally across many tracking sensors. We thus devise a spatial sampling and information exchange protocol that provides probabilistic guarantees on detecting prominent patterns. For this purpose, we define a general notion of significant popular paths that can capture many different types of motion. We design a summary sketch for the data at each tracking node, which can be updated efficiently, and then aggregated across devices to reconstruct the prominent paths in the global data. the algorithm is scalable, even with large number of mobile targets. It uses a hierarchic query system that automatically prioritizes important trajectories - those that are long and popular. We show further that this scheme can in fact give good results by sampling relatively few sensors and targets, and works for streaming spatial data. We prove differential privacy guarantees for the randomized algorithm. Extensive experiments on real GPS data show that the method is efficient and accurate, and is useful in predicting motion of travelers even with small samples.

Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) are an excellent fit to city-scale IoT applications becuase of their long range and a battery life of several years, and a data rate of 25-50kbps, which is sufficient to carry IoT traffic. However, a practical limitation of a LPWAN-based real-time wireless network is the duty-cycle limit imposed on the sub-1GHz band by the FCC. In this paper, we overcome this challenge by proposing the first duty-cycle-aware wireless link scheduling algorithm for real-time LPWANs that considers the urgency of the packets as well as the availability of the wireless channels. the proposed algorithm is implemented in a five-node, wide-area outdoor test-bed in multiple real-world scenarios. Simulation results are provided to quantify its performance under different settings (e.g. larger networks, variety of workloads, and multiple baselines). In both real-world deployments and simulations, the proposed algorithm outperforms standard scheduling algorithms in terms of link schedulability, deadline misses, and buffer size.

the efficiency and effectiveness of network flooding protocols has recently been shown by many publications as well as real world deployments. One notable protocol is Glossy which combines Concurrent Transmission (CT) with Constructive Interference (CI). A drawback of Glossy is that up to now it has only been implemented and evaluated for one type of radio transceiver. In this paper we first present the Glossy implementation for an AT86RF233 radio transceiver which simplifies the packet forwarding due to a shared receive and transmit buffer. We evaluate our implementation against the original Glossy implementation in a minimalist setup as well as in a real world testbed. However, we observed a noticeable difference in the timing accuracy of the transceiver chips but without adverse effects on the network's performance. For this reason, in the second part of this paper we provide a deeper investigation by using Software Defined Radios to emulate concurrent transmission for different types of transceivers. this work confirms the general benefit of constructive interference but also shows its limitations. Moreover, we give novel insight into hardware dependability of constructive interference in concurrent transmissions.

Wireless sensor networks with a large number of cheap low-power interconnected devices bring up challenging tasks when considering the security of their communications. Our paper addresses the issue how cryptographic link keys between communicating sensor nodes can be continuously re-secured even in presence of an attacker who can read the memory of captured nodes. distributed sensor systems enable us to use two different approaches to link key (re-)establishment - secrecy amplification and key extraction from radio channel fading. A secrecy amplification protocol lets a group of neighboring nodes cooperate together to re-secure previously compromised link keys using the non-compromised paths, and previous research showed the ability of secrecy amplification protocols to improve the security of a network from 50% of compromised link keys to 90% of secure keys. Key extraction then exploits radio channel properties to generate secret bits shared between two radio-enabled devices. We propose to combine secrecy amplification and key extraction into a dynamic protocol, where every node will dynamically decide what approach provides a greater benefit, considering the probability of getting the link key re-secured and the resources available. In principle, the more standard traffic messages are exchanged on a given link, the more beneficiary is the usage of key extractions. And less busy links then rely on secrecy amplification(1).
