this paper describes different approaches of realtime GMM (Gaussian Mixture Method) background subtraction algorithm using video sequences for hand image segmentation. In each captured image, the segmentation takes place where pixels belonging to the hands are separated from the background based on background extraction and skin-color segmentation. A time-adaptive mixture of Gaussians is used to model the distribution of each pixel color value. For an input image, every new pixel value is checked, deciding if it matches with one of the existing Gaussians based on the distance from the mean in terms of the standard deviation. the best matching distribution parameters are updated and its weight is increased. It is assumed that the values of the background pixels have low variance and large weight. these matched pixels, considered as foreground, are compared based on skin color thresholds. the hands position and other attributes are tracked by frame. that enables us to distinguish the hand movement from the background and other objects in movement, as well as to extract the information from the movement for dynamic hand gesture recognition.

Eye gaze tracking (EGT) allow us to estimate the direction of gaze and the point of regard. this technique has been successfully used as pointing device in computer interfaces for people with disabilities, but significant technological advances are still required to make EGT appropriate to be used in general computer interfaces. In order to improve the EGT technology, a testbed where new devices and algorithms can be evaluated must be defined. this paper presents a survey of the methods used for EGT and organize them into a computer vision framework, that we use to support the development and evaluation of new techniques. As an example of application of the framework, the calibration function used in the EGT developed in our laboratory is tested, and the results show the precision of the method. Higher accuracy of the testing results is achieved using synthetic images generated by ray tracing, from a physically based model of the eye.

the choice of a color model is of great importance for many computer vision algorithms. However, there are many color models available;the inherent difficulty is how to automatically select a single color model or, alternatively, a subset of features from several color models producing the best result for a particular task. To achieve proper colors components selection, in this paper, it was proposed the use of wrapper method, a data mining approach, to obtain repeatability and distinctiveness in segmentation process. the result was compared with neural network method and yields good feature discrimination. the method was verified experimentally with 108 images from Amsterdam Library of Objects images (ALOI) and 10 aerial images with different photometric conditions. Furthermore, it has shown that the color model selection scheme provides a proper balance between color invariance (repeatability) and discriminative power (distinctiveness).

this paper proposes an algorithm of image retrieval from a partial request. In order to retrieve images containing a specific object or group of objects, we use an algorithm of inexact graph matching, adapted to adjacency graphs of regions. the number of regions representing the object can be different from an image to the other. the algorithm uses a search tree in which only similar nodes are developed the adjacency and spatial relationship of regions are used to prune the tree and accelerate the retrieval. the algorithm computes a distance between graphs, allowing to rank images. this distance takes into account both the distance between region features and the relative position of regions.

We present a system for collaborative conceptual design that allows users potentially located in geographically distant areas to cooperate by sketching, exploring and modifying their ideas interactively, with immediate visual feedback. the system supports several modeling primitives and can be easily extended with user-defined objects. In this context, we introduce the notions of animated and sketchy billboards. Applications of this system include early stages of urban and landscape design, rapid prototype of virtual environments, animation, education and recreational use.

Order statistic filters form a subclass of the stack filters. the design of stack filters is computationally prohibitive for relatively large windows. A possible approach to overcome this difficulty is to constrain design to a smaller class. We propose an algorithm for the design of optimal order statistic filters from training data, and show how it can also be applied to the design of optimal weighted order statistic filters. Some examples that illustrate application of the proposed algorithm are presented, with considerations on training time and precision of the designed filter.

this paper introduces a methodology for adding color to grayscale images in a way that is completely automatic. Towards this goal, we build on a technique that was recently developed to transfer colors from a user-selected source image to a target grayscale image. More specifically, we eliminate the need for human intervention in the selection of the source color images, which can be regarded as a first step towards real-time video colorization. To assess the merit Of our methodology, we performed a survey where volunteers were asked to rate the plausibility of the colorings generated automatically for individual images. In most cases automatically-colored images were rated either as totally plausible or as mostly plausible.

this paper deals with content-based image indexing and category retrieval in general databases. When large categories are searched, systems must explore the database. We introduce an interactive retrieval strategy designed for database exploration. the technique is based on a compound query and a dedicated similarity function. the usual strategy based on a similarity score ranking is replaced by a stochastic image selection process. A competition between feature spaces for the similarity measure refinement is also included in the strategy. A quality assessment is realized on a general database of 6.000 images in order to illustrate and validate our approach.

Implicit surfaces are a powerful shape description for many applications in computer graphics. An implicit surface is defined by a function f:R3 → R as the set of points satisfying f(p)=0. Implicit representation becomes more effective when f is a signed distance function, i.e., when |f| gives the distance to the closest point on the surface and f is negative inside the object and positive outside the object bounded by the surface. the distance function to an arbitrary surface does not have a simple analytic description, and we must resort to approximations. One simple solution is to use a volumetric representation, constructed by sampling f uniformly, but such models are very large and their resolution is limited by the sampling rate. Frisken et al. (2000) proposed adaptively sampled distance fields (ADFs) as a way to overcome these problems. the authors revisit the ADFs and make two contributions to the original framework. First, we analyse the ADF representation and discuss some possible improvements. Second, we show how to compute ADFs more efficiently. © 2001 IEEE.

the classical Douglas-Peucker line-simplification algorithm is recognized as the one that delivers the best perceptual representations of the original lines. It is used extensively for both computer graphics and geographic information systems. there are two variants of this algorithm, the original O(nm) method, where n denotes the number of input vertices and m the number of output segments, that works in any dimension, and the O(n log n) one, which only works for simple 2D planar polylines. In the both variants, a self-intersecting simplified line may be yielded if the accepted approximation is not sufficiently fine. Based on star-shaped subsets, we present in this paper yet another O(mn) Variant of Douglas-Peucker algorithm which preserves the non-self-intersection property for any predefined tolerance.
