computer simulation of realistic crowd behavior has been the focus of active research for more than two decades now. In crowd simulation, there is usually a trade-off between performance and realistic crowd behavior. In this paper, we propose a model, based on potential fields, that enables the introduction of many behaviors in crowd simulations, while keeping good performance. the model uses multiple groups to guide agents to various different goals in the environment, and combines potential fields and reciprocal velocity obstacles (RVO) approaches, where the first sets the preferred velocities of the agents according to their current goals, whereas the second makes the agents avoid collisions. We used three scenarios to demonstrate the capabilities of our model for simulating crowds in which the agents present greater variety of behaviors in real-time without using a complex architecture. © 2013 IEEE.

We present a novel method for correcting the significance level of hypothesis testing that requires multiple comparisons. It is based on the spectral graph theory, in which the variables are seen as the vertices of a complete undirected graph and the correlation matrix as the adjacency matrix that weights its edges. the method increases the statistical power of the analysis by refuting the assumption of independence among variables, while keeping the probability of false positives low. By computing the eigenvalues of the correlation matrix, it is possible to obtain valuable information about the dependence levels among the variables of the problem, so that the effective number of independent variables can be estimated. the method is compared to other available models and its effectiveness illustrated in case studies involving high-dimensional sets of variables.

Real-time detection of sepsis on a video data is a new aboard technique that aids the septic patient and decreases the high mortality rate. the progressive impairment of the micro-circulation associated with increased systemic inflammatory response in sepsis has been considered the origin of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome that often leads to death. However, despite the recognized importance of the microcirculatory dysfunction, analysis methods able to correlate the severity of sepsis with the degree of impairment of micro-hemodynamic captured by portable microscope Side-stream Dark Field Imaging (SDF) are rarely used. Hence, the classification of the severity of sepsis by analyzing the micro-circulatory dysfunction would be of great assistance in diagnosing severity and therapeutic management. In this context, the aim of this work is to propose a new computational methodology based on image processing to obtain graph metrics for determining the degree of micro-vascular and tissue commitment due to sepsis.

White-matter hyperintensity (WMH) is associated with many disorders where it is suggestive of underlying cerebrovascular, small-vessel disease pathology. However, its role in Alzheimer's disease (AD), mixed, and vascular dementia remains an open area of research. the fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging sequence is commonly used to visualize WMH because it provides good image contrast, not only between WMH and normal tissue, but also between WMH and cerebrospinal fluid. Manual segmentation of WMH lesions in brain volumes, on a slice-by-slice basis, is time-consuming with high inter-rater variability, however, this process remains the broadly accepted gold standard. In this study, variations of 2D, 2.5D and 3D U-shaped convolutional neural networks (U-Net CNNs) were used to perform semantic segmentation on FLAIR images. We evaluated these models in brain volumes obtained from 186 individuals from one of three disease classes: healthy normal (N = 94), mild cognitive impairment (N = 55), and AD (N = 37). Four common architectures (VGG16, VGG19, ResNet and EfficientNetB0) were employed as feature extractors. Results were assessed across the whole brain and by brain region (frontal, occipital, parietal, temporal lobes plus the insula) to identify differences in performance. In general, the predicted WMH volumes had an F-measure score >95% on the test data compared to manual segmentation. this work identified that 2.5D with either VGG16 or VGG19 was the most suitable configuration when segmenting WMH. WMH segmentation performance and measured volume was found to vary between regions and disease classes. U-Net CNN architectures have good performance and may provide valuable insights about the white matter pathology.

In this paper we propose an interactive approach for object class segmentation of natural images on touch-screen capable mobile devices. the key research question to which this paper tries to give an answer is: can we effectively correct the errors committed by an automatic or semi-automatic figure-ground segmentation algorithm while also providing real time feedback to the user on a low computational power mobile device? Many research works focused on improving automatic or semi-automatic figure-ground segmentation algorithms, but none tried to take advantage of the existing touch-screen technology integrated in most modern mobile devices to optimize the segmentation results of these algorithms. Our key idea is to use superpixels as interactive buttons that can be quickly tapped by the user to be added or removed from an initial low quality segmentation mask, with the aim of correcting the segmentation errors and produce a satisfying final result. We performed an extensive analysis of the proposed approach by implementing it both on a desktop computer and a mid-range Android device;even though our method is extremely simple, the results we obtained are comparable with those achieved by other state-of-the-art interactive segmentation algorithms. As such, we believe that the proposed approach can be exploited by most image editing mobile applications to provide a simple but highly effective method for interactive object class segmentation.

the purpose of this investigation was to determine if a relationship exists between quantitative measures of digital retinal image quality such as contrast and spatial resolution, and perceptual preferences of human graders. Ad hoc digitization of retinal 35mm color slides will be less than optimal duc to the unusual light scattering properties of the retina. Quantitative and qualitative measures of contrast and entropy were calculated for two test images. Resolution was determined by the scanning procedure. A pairwise comparison technique was adopted,for measuring the medical technician's visual preference, and the results analyzed using a formal, quantitative methodology, Result showed that measures such as entropy and contrast did generally correlate with perceived image quality. A single, universally applicable set of scanning parameters was not found that would consistently produce the most preferred image for all image quality criteria.

High performance computing is experiencing a major paradigm shift with the introduction of accelerators, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and Intel Xeon Phi (MIC). these processors have made available a tremendous computing power at low cost, and are transforming machines into hybrid systems equipped with CPUs and accelerators. Although these systems can deliver a very high peak performance, making full use of its resources in real-world applications is a complex problem. Most current applications deployed to these machines are still being executed in a single processor, leaving other devices underutilized. In this paper we explore a scenario in which applications are composed of hierarchical dataow tasks which are allocated to nodes of a distributed memory machine in coarse-grain, but each of them may be composed of several ner-grain tasks which can be allocated to dierent devices within the node. We propose and implement novel performance aware scheduling techniques that can be used to allocate tasks to devices. We evaluate our techniques using a pathology image analysis application used to investigate brain cancer morphology, and our experimental evaluation shows that the proposed scheduling strategies signicantly outperforms other ecient scheduling techniques, such as Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time - HEFT, in cooperative executions using CPUs, GPUs, and Masc. also experimentally show that our strategies are less sensitive to inaccuracy in the scheduling input data and that the performance gains are maintained as the application scales. © 2014 IEEE.

this paper presents a model to reconstruct 3D virtual humans based on a single and spontaneous image. the main goal is to use computer vision and pattern recognition techniques to build coherent virtual humans according to an input picture. To achieve this goal we provide a semi-automatic process that includes 3D posture detection, segmentation of human body parts, and silhouette processing. Such information is used to generate a 3D virtual human, which can be further animated. the approach proposed in this paper aims to speed up the creation of 3D articulated characters, providing avatars based on pictures. Experimental results indicate that our approach is a good option for generating virtual humans from images based on a few mouse clicks. © 2011 IEEE.

image morphing has been extensively studied in computer graphics. Given two input images, morphing algorithms produce a sequence of inbetween images which transforms the source image into the target image in a visually pleasant way. We propose an algorithm, based on recent advances from texture-from-sample ideas, which synthesizes a morphing sequence targeted specifically for textures. We use the idea of binary masks (or texton masks) to control the morphing sequence and guarantee a coherent transition from the source texture to the target texture.

An image processing architecture that is based on three-dimensional (3-D) VLSI and consists of optically connected layers is proposed. In 3-D VLSI, the optical interconnection is not essentially different from the metal interconnection, but it can easily propagate the data on a plane. the isotropic radiation of the light is algebraically formulated as the isotropic propagation of data, and an efficient template matching algorithm that can be pipelined on multiple devices is proposed.
