Very high resolution (VHR) images are large datasets for pixel annotation - a process that has depended on the supervised training of an effective pixel classifier. Active learning techniques have mitigated this problem, but pixel descriptors are limited to local image information and the large number of pixels makes the response time to the user's actions impractical, during active learning. To circumvent the problem, we present an active learning strategy that relies on superpixel descriptors and a priori dataset reduction. Firstly, we compare VHR image annotation using superpixel- and pixel-based classifiers, as designed by the same state-of-the-art active learning technique - Multi-Class Level Uncertainty (MCLU). Even with the dataset reduction provided by the superpixel representation, MCLU remains unfeasible for user interaction. therefore, we propose a technique to considerably reduce the superpixel dataset for active learning. Moreover, we subdivide the reduced dataset into a list of subsets with random sample rearrangement to gain both speed and sample diversity during the active learning process.

As we enter the deep submicron era, transistors are increasingly added to chips, causing the chips to become hotter in a non-uniform manner. this is due to different processing tasks in different parts of the chips. this thermal gradient also causes a great number of problems such as the reduction in reliability of chips and interconnects due to electromigration, and system performance degradation because of increased delay and lowered clock frequencies. Since these thermal issues exist, interconnect routing, especially global routing, should be performed to consider the temperature distribution of substrates and the actual delay of interconnects. In this paper, we propose a global routing method based on image processing and computer vision techniques in which the probability of chip failure due to interconnect failure is reduced, and performance degradation from increased delay is also prevented. We observed that our method reduced the number of grids in hot regions by up to 50 % when compared with a conventional router, while maintaining the delay of interconnects as small as possible.

FPGA-based computing boards are frequently used as hardware accelerators for image processing algorithms based on sliding window operations (SWOs). SWOs are both computationally intensive and data intensive and benefit from hardware acceleration with FPGAs, especially for delay sensitive applications. the current design process requires that, for each specific application using SWOs with different size of window, image, etc.;a detail design must be completed before a realistic estimate of the achievable speedup can be obtained. We present an automated tool, Sliding Window Operation Optimization (SWOOP), that generates the estimate of speedup for a high performance design before detailed implementation is complete. the achievable speedup is determined by the area of the FPGA, or, more often, the memory bandwidth to the processing elements. the memory bandwidth to each processing element is a combination of bandwidth to the FPGA and the efficient use of on-chip RAM as a data cache. SWOOP uses analytic techniques to automatically determine the number of parallel processing elements to implement on the FPGA, the assignment of input and output data to on-board memory, and the organization of data in on-chip memory to most effectively keep the processing elements busy. the result is a block layout of the final design, its memory architecture, and a measure of the achievable speedup. the results, compared to manual designs, show that the estimates obtained using SWOOP are very accurate. © 2006 IEEE.

Many papers have presented rendering techniques and simplification ideas with the objective of speeding up image generation for irregular grid data sets. For large data sets, however, even the current fastest algorithms are known to require seconds to generate each image, making real-time analysis of such data sets very difficult, or even impossible, unless one has access to powerful and expensive computer hardware. In order to synthesize a system for handling very large data sets analysis, we have assembled algorithms for rendering, simplification and triangulation, and added to them some optimizations. We have made some improvements on one of the best current algorithms for rendering irregular grids, and added to it some simple approximation methods in both image and object space, resulting in a system that achieves high frame rates, even on slow computers without any specific graphic hardware. the algorithm adapts itself to the time budget it has available for each image generation, using hierarchical representations of the mesh for faster delivery of images when transformations are imposed to the data. When given additional time, the algorithm generates finer images, obtaining the precise final image if given sufficient time. We were able to obtain frame rates of the order of 5Hz for medium-sized data sets, which is about 20 times faster than previous rendering algorithms. With a trade-off between image accuracy and speed, similar frame rates can be achieved on different computers. © 2000 IEEE.

Relevance feedback approaches have been established as an important tool for interactive search, enabling users to express their needs. However, in view of the growth of multimedia collections available, the user efforts required by these methods tend to increase as well, demanding approaches for reducing the need of user interactions. In this context, this paper proposes a semi-supervised learning algorithm for relevance feedback to be used in image retrieval tasks. the proposed semi-supervised algorithm aims at using both supervised and unsupervised approaches simultaneously. While a supervised step is performed using the information collected from the user feedback, an unsupervised step exploits the intrinsic dataset structure, which is represented in terms of ranked lists of images. Several experiments were conducted for different image retrieval tasks involving shape, color, and texture descriptors and different datasets. the proposed approach was also evaluated on multimodal retrieval tasks, considering visual and textual descriptors. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

graphics applications have generated visual effects increasingly realistic and for such purpose, reflection effects are essential. To render realistic images, the reflectance of surfaces must be simulated accurately. In this context, it is common to use ray tracing, since it represents with great fidelity the behavior of light. However, ray tracing is still a very costly algorithm, so far indicated only in offline rendering scenarios. this paper presents a new hybrid solution for generating realistic rendering of objects in 3D walkthroughs. Moreover, the results show that our algorithm has a competitive performance, especially in generating high quality fast reflections, when comparing with those generated with a fully implemented ray tracing algorithm.

the main objective of Content-Based image Retrieval (CBIR) systems is to retrieve a ranked list containing the most similar images of a collection given a query image, by taking into account their visual content. Although these systems represent a very promising approach, in many situations is very challenging to assure the quality of returned ranked lists. Supervised approaches rely on training data and information obtained from user interactions to identify and then improve low-quality results. However, these approaches require a lot of human efforts which can be infeasible for many systems. In this paper, we present two novel unsupervised measures for estimating the effectiveness of ranked lists in CBIR tasks. Given an estimation of the effectiveness of ranked lists, many CBIR systems can, for example, emulate the training process, but now without any user intervention. Improvements can also be achieved on several unsupervised approaches, such as re-ranking and rank aggregation methods, once the estimation measures can help to consider more relevant information by distinguishing effective from non-effective ranked lists. Both proposed measures are computed using a novel image representation of ranked lists and distances among images considering a given dataset. the objective is to exploit the visual patterns encoded in the image representations for estimating the effectiveness of ranked lists. Experiments involving shape, color, and texture descriptors demonstrate that the proposed approaches can provide accurate estimations of the quality in terms of effectiveness of ranked lists. the use of proposed measures are also evaluated in image retrieval tasks aiming at improving the effectiveness of rank aggregation approaches. © 2013 IEEE.

A vague spatial data warehouse allows multidimensional queries with spatial predicates to support the analysis of business scores related to vague spatial data, addressing real world phenomena characterized by inexact locations or indeterminate boundaries. However, vague spatial data are usually represented and stored as multiple geometries and impair the query processing performance. In this paper, we introduce an index called VSB-index to improve the query processing performance in vague spatial data warehouses, focusing on range queries and vague regions. We also conduct an experimental evaluation demonstrating that our VSB-index provided remarkable performance gains up to 97% over existing solutions.
