We deal with content-based image indexing and category retrieval in general databases. When large categories are searched, systems must explore the database. We introduce an interactive retrieval strategy designed for database exploration. the technique is based on a compound query and a dedicated similarity function. the usual strategy based on a similarity score ranking is replaced by a stochastic image selection process. A competition between feature spaces for the similarity measure refinement is also included in the strategy. A quality assessment is realized on a general database of 6000 images in order to illustrate and validate our approach.

In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the Two-Dimensional Fractional Fourier Transform (2D-FRFT), and show that under certain conditions, the 2D-FRFT technique possesses the attractive property of rotation invariance. Based on our analysis, we proposed a novel digital image watermarking method which combines 2D chirp signal withthe addition and rotation invariant properties of 2D-FRFT to achieve improved robustness and security. the effectiveness of the proposed solution is demonstrated through experiments.

In this paper, we present a novel method for estimating the effective number of independent variables in imaging applications that require multiple hypothesis testing. the method increases the statistical power of the results by refuting the assumption of independence among variables, while keeping the probability of false positives low. It is based on the spectral graph theory, in which the variables are seen as the vertices of a complete undirected graph and the correlation matrix as the adjacency matrix that weights its edges. By computing the eigenvalues of the correlation matrix, it is possible to obtain valuable information about the dependence levels among the variables of the problem. the method is compared to other available models and its effectiveness illustrated in a case study on the morphology of the human corpus callosum

We characterize the feature superset of collaborative virtual reality environments (CVRE) out of existing implementations, and derive a novel component framework for transforming standalone VR tools into fully fledged multi-threaded collaborative environments. the contributions of our approach rely on cost-effective techniques for loading graphics rendering, user interaction and network communications software components into separate threads, with a top thread for session collaboration. the framework recasts VR tools under a scalable peer-to-peer topology for scene sharing, callback hooks for event broadcasting and multicamera perspectives of avatar interaction. We validate the framework by applying it to our own ALICE VR Navigator. Experimental results show the good performance of our approach in the collaborative inspection of complex models.

the aim of this project is to develop a new approach for correction of bone deformities using a computer-aided surgery tool. We use a measurement based planning of correction on CT data and ultrasound based navigation system for real-time support of operation. We implement a single cut, close and open wedge osteotomy correction of complex three dimensional deformities. In the discussed method virtual reality and imageprocessing techniques allows planning and supporting of the operation on a personal computers. the designed software prototype simplifies significantly the process of osteotomy planning and allows training and assisting a surgeon. the program reduces total time of the operation planning and increase accuracy of correction significantly.

the image foresting transform (IFT) has been proposed for the design of image operators based on connectivity. the IFT reduces imageprocessing problems into a minimum-cost path forest problem in a graph derived from the image. It has been successfully used for image filtering, segmentation, and analysis. In this work, we propose a novel image operator which solves segmentation by pruning trees of the forest. First, an IFT is applied to create an optimum-path forest whose roots are pixels selected inside a desired object. In this forest, the background consists of a few subtrees rooted at pixels on the object's boundary. these boundary pixels are identified and their subtrees are eliminated, such that the remaining forest defines the object. the tree pruning is an effective alternative to situations where image segmentation methods based on competing seeds fail. We present an interactive implementation of the tree-pruning technique, show several examples and discuss some experiments toward fully automatic segmentation.

One of the difficulties of pattern recognition is developing a good evaluation of the classes presented in a scene. To suitably describe those classes it is necessary to find feature spaces which allow them to be distinguished from each other. We propose an unsupervised segmentation/classification technique associated with textural description and report the results obtained, which are quite encouraging.
