We present an hierarchical approach to segment images of yeast cells based on watershed and space-scale analysis. Yeasts belong to an important fungi class and the performance of bioreactors and other chemical processes are greatly influenced by their morphological character. the method proposed is capable of segmenting yeast cells based on the analysis of survival time, shape and gray-scale features of the Tree of Critical Lakes. We show experimental results for one group of yeast images obtained from the School of Food Engineering at Unicamp, Brazil. Preliminary comparison shows that the proposed method provides cells with area 10% lower than traditional approach, as well as its contours preserved.

We propose a practical blind detection multibit watermarking system. the proposed system is analogous to code division multiplexing in spread spectrum communications. Performance improvements with respect to existing multibit systems are obtained by means of informed embedding. With informed embedding we exploit perceptual modelling by using a wavelet-based multiplicative mask and exploit the digital content information to improve watermark detection. We implemented the proposed system for fragile and semirobust multibit watermarks. the obtained results confirm the good system performance considering watermark properties of fidelity, efficiency, data payload and robustness against volumetric distortion sources.

We compare two distinct primal sketch feature extraction operators: one based on neural network feature learning and the other based on mathematical models of the features. We tested both kinds of operator with a set of known, but previously untrained, synthetic features and, while varying their classification thresholds, measured the operator's false acceptance and false rejection errors. Results have shown that the model-based approach is more unstable and unreliable than the learning-based approach, which presented better results with respect to the number of correctly classified features.

Currently, even considering the recent advances in the microprocessor power computing, high definition multimedia applications still require very complex demands to allow real-time video encoding. Particularly, modern video encoders (MPEG/ITU H.26x series) depend of complex and computationally exhaustive motion estimation algorithms to identify and remove temporal redundancy among consecutive (or not) frames inside a video sequence, as strategy to reduce the final compressed bit rate. In fact, the mechanism of block matching can be considered the most critical encoder algorithm, in terms of computational demands, like it is responsible for searching, in distinct reference frames, for similar pixel blocks related with each one of the input image blocks. the number of required block comparisons for high definition videos represents a clear and important restriction for real-time implementations. this paper introduces an improved strategy of block matching method, which was optimized for multiprocessing execution, mainly focusing in implementation over general purpose graphical processing unit technologies, as the NVidia CUDA® GPUs. the improved motion estimation solution was implemented in the JSVM reference code (scalable version of H.264 video encoder), when it was registered a speed up gain of more than 350% in average for 4CIF videos. this paper aims at proposing an elastically deformable surface with use of differential geometric structures. On the basis of the theory of a Cosserat surface, a computationally processable equation that relates the accumulated elastic energy and the variations in the differential geometry variables (metric and curvature tensors) of the deformable surface is presented. On the basis of our analysis, we propose a novel algorithm to compute more precisely, without compromising the interface's simplicity, the potential deformation energy in terms of the derivatives of the surface. With our proposal, we may maintain the finite difference scheme for computing deformations iteratively. Some simulation results are included.

the paper presents a framework for distributed reactive characters on a computer network and proposes innovative concepts for shared state management. Firstly, behavioral accuracy is defined in terms of three types of state (physical, procedural and emotional). Secondly, visual soundness, a concept inversely proportional to behavioral accuracy, is associated with the autonomy of clones. thirdly, the usual concept of dead reckoning is relaxed by exploring the idea of autonomy, which is the basis for networked reactive characters. the framework, built on top of an open architecture toolkit called Bamboo, can gracefully cope with reactive environments producing good levels of visual soundness, which results in smooth animations, and behavioral accuracy.

A picking mechanism (pointing and indicating) with the cursor is essential for any direct-manipulation application. the windowing systems, under whose control a direct-manipulation application runs, provide facilities that together with special utility routines allow identification of which object within the region the user is pointing at. Such picking algorithms have been widely used for selecting objects under a 2D mouse cursor. We present a simple yet effective application-independent 3D picking algorithm for 3D input devices. We also discuss a differential geometry based surface constraint that can be applied to the 3D cursor position for improving points matching. In order to demonstrate the techniques, two sample applications using a 3D input device are shown.

A robust and efficient technique to segment shaded areas in aerial color images is presented here. this technique is based on the physical phenomenon of atmospheric dispersion of the sunlight most well known as the Rayleigh scattering effect. this technique does not depend on special algorithms to classify or to form clusters of objects appearing in complex aerial images. In fact, the mathematical model, derived from the physical model is very simple but it produces consistent results and can be applied to color images obtained by airborne and orbital sensors (e.g., Landsat TM and IKONOS).
