In this paper, we describe a hand gesture recognition engine based on computer vision (CV), as a computing platform to support gesture interaction between humans and computers. Presenting a simple approach to recognizing gestures through image processing techniques and a single video camera, we address the problem of generic hand gestures recognition, especially of spelled sign language hand poses, introducing a preliminary study to its kinetic component. In our methodology, the system initially removes the background of captured images, eliminating irrelevant pixel information. the human hand is then detected, segmented and its contours localized. From these contours significant metrics are derived, allowing a search in a pre-defined hand poses' library, where each pose is previously converted into a set of metric values. We discuss several algorithmic options to support our methodology and present experimental results, regarding the recognition of Portuguese sign language signs. We discuss future directions of our work.

In this paper we introduce the color-based catchment basin merging algorithm, an area-based segmentation approach that is specifically designed to segment low-altitude aerial images, as a preprocessing step to 3D reconstruction. this approach extends the watershed-based catchment basin merging algorithm, which is purely geometric, by introducing color similarity as an additional criterion to decide on the merging of evolving regions. Experiments performed with real aerial images of varied nature demonstrate that this modification eliminates over-segmentation problems of the existing algorithm, allowing large-scale urban scenes to be segmented in an accurate, reliable and fully automatic way.

this work presents two fast and iterative methods that integrate segmentation by watershed and three-dimensional visualization, while the classical approach is to separate these two processes. the user-aided segmentation is based on iterative watershed, efficiently implemented using the image foresting transform (IFT). the first proposed algorithm consists of extracting segmented structures' borders during the segmentation and updating them at each iteration. Structure visualization is achieved by border projection. the second algorithm updates the image directly from the changes of the segmented scene occurred in each step. the two methods were implemented in C and tested with various magnetic resonance images. the results are satisfactory as compared to the classical approaches. the incremental image algorithm is a little faster than the classical one while the incremental border algorithm, although a little slower in segmenting, allows a very fast rendering, very suitable for object manipulation. thus, the proposed methods provide a good feedback to user.

We describe an approach for automatically registering color images with 3D laser scanned models. We use the chi-square statistic to compare color images to polygonal models texture mapped with acquired laser reflectance values. In complicated scenes we find that the chi-square test is not robust enough to permit an automatic global registration approach. therefore, we introduce two techniques for obtaining initial pose estimates that correspond to a coarse alignment of the data. the first method is based on rigidly attaching a camera to a laser scanner and the second utilizes object tracking to decouple these imaging devices. the pose estimates serve as an initial guess for our optimization method, which maximizes the chi-square statistic over a local space of transformations in order to automatically determine the proper alignment.

this paper describes a new method for mammographic image noise suppression and enhancement based on the wavelet transform. At each resolution, coefficients associated with noise are modelled by Gaussian random variables; coefficients associated with edges are modelled by generalized Gaussian random variables, and a shrinkage function is assembled based on posterior probabilities. the shrinkage functions at consecutive scales are combined, and then applied to the wavelet coefficients. Given a resolution of analysis, the image denoising process is adaptive (i.e. does not require further parameter adjustments), and the selection of a gain factor provides the desired detail enhancement. the enhancement function was designed to avoid introducing artifacts in the enhancement process, which is essential in mammographic image analysis. Our preliminary results indicate that our method allows us to detect microcalcifications and other suspicious structures in situations where their detection would be difficult otherwise. Compared to other approaches, our method requires less parameter adjustments by the user.

images of underwater scenes suffer from poor contrast. Water-induced contrast decay varies across the scene and is exponential in the depths of scene points, which prevents standard computer vision algorithms from operating properly. In this paper we show how to overcome this problem by adapting an existing model of light propagation in the (foggy) atmosphere to describe the behavior of light in liquid media. By integrating the resulting model within a dense stereo algorithm, we recover disparity maps of scenes immersed in water from pairs of images of these scenes acquired from distinct viewpoints. Experiments performed with real underwater images of various degrees of turbidity show that the use of a physically based light-propagation model allows one to reconstruct underwater scenes more accurately than with standard stereo algorithms alone.

this work presents a 3D scene reconstruction method, based on space carving, that works with a hand-held camera. In our system, the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the camera are determined at the moment of image capture, as opposed to other systems that rely on fixed pre-calibrated camera setups. In order to do this we place a special calibration pattern in the scene in such a way that it does not alter scene visibility. However the calibration pattern may be partially occluded by the objects of interest in the scene. this has led us to adopt a calibration method based on model recognition. Scene reconstruction is obtained from the set of input images by an adaptive space-carving algorithm that uses not only photometric information but also segmentation information. the segmentation information of a given input image is determined by a robust statistical test based on an approximate model of the scene's background. Such a model is computed from a set of images of the scene's background that are warped in such a way that they match the geometry of the desired camera.

We propose an approach for efficient two-dimensional skeletonization of binary shapes through numerical calculation of vector fields and curvature estimation by using the Weingarten formulae. It can be shown that potential valleys generated by vector fields have a close relationship with the definition of intensity axis of symmetry. Given a binary image, the algorithm consists in generating a grayscale image corresponding to the magnitude of a vector field followed by a search of the points that belong to the bottom of the potential valleys or regions with minimum magnitude. It can be shown that these points provide a good approximation to the medial axis of the object in study. Also, the proposed method demonstrated good performance due to the fact that the vector field can be easily and rapidly calculated using the fast Fourier transform algorithm.

In this work we model the problem of identifying how close structurally two proteins are as a problem of measuring the similarity between color images that represent their contact maps, where the chromatic information encodes the chemical nature of the contacts. We study two conceptually distinct methods to measure the similarity between such contact maps: a content-based image retrieval one and another based on image registration. In experiments with contact maps constructed from the Protein Data Bank (PDB), the image registration approach was able to identify with 100% precision 8 instances of a protein class mixed with 28 proteins of other classes. the content-based image retrieval approach had an accuracy only a little worse than that.

this paper presents a multiple classifier system applied to the handwritten word recognition (HWR) problem. the goal is to analyse the influence of different global classifiers taken in isolation as well as combined in a particular HWR task. the application proposed is the recognition of the Portuguese handwritten names of the months. the strategy takes advantage of the complementary mechanisms of three different classifiers: conventional neural network, class-modular neural network and hidden Markov models, yielding a multiple classifier that is more efficient than either individual technique. the recognition rates obtained vary from 75.9% using the standalone HMM classifier to 96.0% considering the classifier combination.
