We propose a multidimensional visualization technique, named Viz3D, that creates a 3D representation of n-dimensional data that may be interactively manipulated by users to handle visual cluttering and object occlusion. the projection performed in Viz3D is comparable in quality withthe 3D projections obtained with well-known dimensionality reduction techniques, at a lower complexity cost. While a 3D projection conveys more information, giving the user more control of the visual representation and an additional dimension, as compared to 2D, visual cluttering and object occlusion are still a problem in handling large multidimensional data sets. To produce more effective visualizations, two strategies are introduced. Dimensionality is handled with a similarity clustering of attributes prior to projection. Data set size is handled with a new strategy of visualizing data densities, rather than individual data records. Boththe direct and density Viz3D visualizations provide the basis for a user driven visual clustering approach applicable to high-dimensional data sets that is very simple, intuitive and effective.

this paper reports some issues involved in the construction of an interactive, interoperable application, whose primary purpose is to be used as a virtual mockup. this graphic tool was tailored for machine vision application prototyping, to cope with metrological settings of large part assemblies. Some relevant aspects of designing interactive 3D applications will be discussed, including an account of some modem graphics libraries, particularly Java 3D. the achieved results, including some interesting byproducts of this work, to be publicly distributed soon, are also presented.

Linear analysis of intensity level histograms is proposed as a method to determine the area fractions of homogeneous components of images. the area tractions are the coefficients of the respective histograms in the linear combination that best fits the histogram of the entire image. this method can be applied whenever the components can be identified by their individual histograms which must be linearly independent. Its accuracy was tested for images of real surfaces that were edited to contain known fractions of the component, and it proved to be suitable for the analysis of images made of textured components that show large overlapping of their histograms.

In scientific visualization, interaction tools allow users to navigate through volume and explore its features, helping information understanding. the use of sound as a data display tool (sonfication) has also been shown to support information understanding and may help dealing with adding dimensions to a visual display. However, thus far the issues of data exploration tools and sonfication have been treated separately by the visualization community. this paper presents an interaction model for scientific visualization that considers the main issues related to sonfication, and shows a prototype implemented to illustrate the proposed model. the prototype is a class library that implements a number of interaction tools with sonfication functions, which is freely available and can be employed in general purpose visualization applications.

this paper introduces Stellar Simplification, a fast implementation of the Four-Face Cluster algorithm. In our version of this mesh simplification scheme, we adopt a probabilistic heuristic that substitutes the priority queue of the original algorithm. this made our version, in average, 40% faster In our implementation, we adopt a very concise data structure which uses only two arrays of integers to represent the surface topology. We also introduce a new scheme,to encode and decode the hierarchy of meshes generated by the simplification algorithm. this scheme can be used for progressive transmission and compression of meshes.
