this paper presents two techniques aiming at exploring databases through multivariate visualizations. Both techniques intend to deal with the problem caused by the limited amount of elements that can be presented simultaneously in traditional visual exploration procedures. the first technique, the Frequency Plot, combines data frequency with interactive filtering to identify clusters and trends in subsets of the database. thus, graphical elements (lines, pixels, icons, or graphical marks) are color differentiated proportionally to how frequent the value being represented is, while interactive filtering allows the selection of interesting partitions of the database. the second technique presented in this work, the Relevance Plot, corresponds to assigning different levels of color distinguishably to visual elements according to their relevance to a user's specified data properties set, which can be chosen visually, and dynamically.

this paper presents a novel visual approach to evaluate, ill a fast and effective way, the development of new image feature extraction techniques concerning content-based image retrieval. this new approach takes advantage of all interactive 3-dimensional visualization fed by the image features obtained through a given extraction technique under analysis. Using controlled test image datasets, the researcher can literally "see" the discrimination power of the image features. this new approach gives a very good insight of the behavior of a given image feature extractor algorithm, which are confirmed by the the well-known precision and recall measurements. We applied the visual approach proposed onto a wavelet-based image retrieval system, which is supporting the development of a Picture Archiving and Communication System that allows to retrieve images by content.

Audio-visual Speech Recognition has been an active area of research lately. A bit, and yet unsolved, part of this problem is the visual only recognition, or lip reading. Considering an image sequence of a person pronouncing a word, a full image analysis solution would have to segment the mouth area, extract relevant features, and use them to be able to classify the word from those visual features. In this paper we approach this problem by proposing a segmentation technique for the lips contours together with a set of features based on the extracted contours which is able to perform lip reading with promising results. We have collected visual speech sequences in our lab and show the results here for a set of ten words in brazilian Portuguese, spoken by different speakers in more than 150 samples. the approach can be extended and applied to other spoken languages as well.

this article presents a new perspective to image retrieval based on multivariate factor analysis. Modern imaging modalities provide an overwhelming amount of information that cannot be appropriately handled without computerized tools. image retrieval methods aim to retrieve relevant images from a collected database, based on their content. the problem is made more difficult due to the high dimension of the variable space in which the images are represented. Factor analysis is able to minimize data redundancy and reveal hidden patterns. the characterization of complex features such as shape can be performed in a new lower-dimensional basis, in which the variables account for the correlation among regions of interest. the similarity between images is computed based on a set of vector variables obtained from image registration. Relevance feedback is used to iteratively determine the importance of each factor in the similarity function. the factors that are supposed to encompass the user's preferences are implicitly detected.

Content-Based image Retrieval (CBIR) systems have been developed aiming at enabling users to search and retrieve images based on their properties such as shape, color and texture. In this paper we are concerned with shape-based image retrieval. Here, we discuss a recently proposed shape descriptor called contour saliences, defined as the influence areas of its higher curvature points. this paper introduces a robust approach to estimate contour saliences by exploiting the relation between a contour and its skeleton, modifies the original definition to include the location and the value of saliences along the contour and proposes a new metric to compare contour saliences. the paper also evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed descriptor with respect to Fourier Descriptors, Curvature Scale Space and Moment Invariants.

the computation of 2-D optical flow by means of regularized pel-recursive algorithms raises a host of issues, which include the treatment of outliers, motion discontinuities and occlusion among other problems. We propose a new approach which allows us to deal with these issues within a common framework. Our approach is based on the use of a technique called Generalized Cross-Validation to estimate the best regularization scheme for a given pixel. In our model, the regularization parameter is a matrix whose entries can account for diverse sources of error. the estimation of the motion vectors takes into consideration local properties of the image following a spatially adaptive approach where each moving pixel is supposed to have its own regularization matrix. Preliminary experiments indicate that this approach provides robust estimates of the optical flow.

In this paper we propose a practical blind detection multibit watermarking system. the proposed system is analogous to code division multiplexing in spread spectrum communications. Performance improvements with respect to existing multibit systems are obtained by means of informed embedding. With informed embedding we exploit perceptual modeling by using a wavelet-based multiplicative mask and exploit the digital content information to improve watermark detection. We implemented the Proposed system for fragile and semi-robust multibit watermarks. the obtained results confirm the good system performance considering watermark properties of fidelity, efficiency, data payload and robustness against valumetric distortion sources.

A picking mechanism (pointing and indicating) with the cursor is essential for any direct-manipulation application. the windowing systems, under which control a direct-manipulation application runs, provide facilities that together with special utility routines allow identifying which object within the region the user is pointing at. Such picking algorithms have been widely used for selecting objects under a 2D mouse cursor. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective application-independent 3D picking algorithm for 3D input devices. We also discuss a differential geometry based surface constraint that can be applied to the 3D cursor position for improving points matching. In order to demonstrate the techniques, two sample applications using a 3D input device are shown.

Mail sorting automation is yet a partially solved challenge. Due to no fixed positions of the semantic information in envelope images, part of this challenge is the automatic location of address blocks. In this paper we approach this problem by proposing a new postal envelope segmentation method based on 2-D histogram clustering and watershed transform. Segmentation task consists in detecting the 2-D histogram modes associated with homogeneous regions in envelope. A new filter used for 2-D histogram calculation is proposed the homogeneous modes in 2-D histogram are segmented through the morphological watershed transform. Our approach is applied to complex postal envelopes. Very little a priori knowledge of the envelope images is required. the advantages of this approach will be described and illustrated with tests carried out on 300 different images where there are no fixed position for the handwritten address block, postmarks and stamps. A ground with strategy is employed to evaluate the accuracy of segmentation.

In addition to speech, gestures have been considered as a means of interacting with a computer as naturally as possible. Like speech, gestures can be acquired and recognized using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), but there are several problems that must be overcome. In this paper we propose solutions to two of these problems: the feature extraction and the HMMs training. First, the acquisition is done by means of a high speed vision camera which allows the position of a hand to be obtained every 1 ms. this simplifies the feature extraction task and also allows low-level fusion with speech to be considered, which is a future goal. Secondly, we introduce quantized features, after carefully selecting extracted features, in order to avoid drastically increasing the size of the gesture database needed for good training of the HMMs. We finally show results that demonstrate the ability of such quantized features to significantly improve the recognition rate despite a rather small database and to allow user-independent recognition of gestures.
