A long-standing challenge in the field of volume rendering is to obtain high quality images in near real-time. this is particularly important for scientific datasets where highly precise results are required to ensure accurate data interpretation. this paper presents RZSweep as a new hardware-assisted technique for volume rendering of regular datasets based on the plane-sweep paradigm. Although some research has been done in the past for irregular datasets, this paper presents the first attempt to explore the capabilities of the plane sweep paradigm for regular datasets. RZSweep is an exact, object order, direct volume rendering (DVR), back-to-front projection algorithm wherein a plane sweeps through the volume in depth order, projecting all the data elements within the user specified threshold onto the image plane. the algorithm uses a hardware rendering pipeline to composite the final image. the space complexity of the algorithm is bound to the number of vertices in the largest diagonal plane of the dataset. A prototype of the algorithm renders a dataset of size 256 3 in near real-time of 0.77 seconds on a single off-the-shelf commodity hardware PC. Every data element within the specified threshold contributes to the final image in its correct spatial order that is guaranteed by the use of a heap.

We report on new results on the use of Algebraic Reconstruction Techniques (ART)for reconstructing from helical cone-beam computerized Tomography (CT) data. We investigate two variants of ART for this task: a standard one that considers a single ray in an iterative step and a block version which groups several cone-beam projections when calculating an iterative step. Both algorithms were implemented using modified Kaiser-Bessel window functions, also known as blobs, placed on the body-centered cubic (bcc) grid. the algorithms were used to reconstruct a modified 3D Shepp-Logan phantom from data collected for the PI-geometry for two different maximum cone-beam angles (+/-9.46degrees and +/-18.43degrees). Both scattering and quantum noise (for three different noise levels) were introduced to create noisy projections. the results presented here (for both noiseless and noisy data sets) point to the fact that, as opposed to filtered backprojection algorithms, the quality of the reconstructions produced by the ART methods does not suffer from the increase in the cone-beam angle.

this work, describes a new framework for automatic analysis of optic fundus non-mydriatic images, focusing on the segmentation of the blood vessels by using pixel classification based on pattern recognition techniques. Each pi-vel is represented by a feature vector composed of color information and measurements at different scales taken from the continuous wavelet (Morlet) transform as well as from mean and order filtering applied to the green channel. the major benefit resulting from the wavelet application to the optic fundus images is its multiscale analysing capability in tuning to specific frequencies, thus allowing noise filtering and blood vessel enhancement in a single step. Supervised classifiers are then applied to label each pi-vel as either a vessel or a non-vessel. Two different strategies to select the traning set have been devised: (1) the blood vessels of a sample image are completely drawn by hand, leading to a labeled image (i.e. vessels x non-vessel pixels) which is used to train the classifier, to be applied to other images: (2) the vessels located in a given small portion of the target image are drawn by hand and the remaining fundus image is segmented by a classifier trained using the hand-drawn portion to define the training set. the latter strategy is particularly suitable for the implementation of a semi-automated software to be used by health workers in order to avoid the need of setting imaging parameters such as thresholds. Both strategies have been extensively assessed and several successful experimental results using real-case images have been obtained.

Texture segmentation is a basic task in the process of satellite image analysis. However, texture characterization is not an easy task specially when more than one wavelength band need to be considered. Several difficulties are present, as the basic texture definition in different resolution and image scales. Consequently, some approaches are essentially empiric and should be adjusted to different needs. We present a new method for combining multiband information for texture segmentation. It is based on an extension of fractal dimension analyze of texture for multi channel and is rotational invariant this method allow texture classification of thematic maps made from combination of N wavelength bands. the method was validated comparing its results with others implementations using mosaic of natural textures and real satellite images. © 2003 IEEE.

Creating models of real scenes is a complex task for which the use of traditional modelling techniques is inappropriate. For this task, laser rangefinders are frequently used to sample the scene from several viewpoints, with the resulting range images integrated into a final model. In practice, due to surface reflectance properties, occlusions and accessibility limitations, certain areas of the scenes are usually not sampled, leading to holes and introducing undesirable artifacts in the resulting models. We present an algorithm for filling holes on surfaces reconstructed from point clouds. the algorithm is based on moving least squares and can recover both geometry and shading information, providing a good alternative when the properties to be reconstructed are locally smooth. the reconstruction process is mostly automatic and the sampling rate in the reconstructed areas follows the given samples. We demonstrate the use of the algorithm on both real and synthetic data sets to obtain complete geometry and reasonable shading. © 2003 IEEE.

We propose a new strategy to estimate surface normals from sparse data for reconstruction. Our approach is based on tensorial fields morphologically adapted to infer normals forming smooth surfaces. they act as three-dimensional structuring elements for finding precise normals. Robust orientation inference is performed by an enhanced accumulation process using the tensorial fields. the surface dedicated aspects of our propositions are suitable for smooth surface inference from noisy data. We present qualitative and quantitative results to show the behavior of the original methods and ours. A comparative discussion of these results remarks the efficiency of our extensions. © 2003 IEEE.

We report some issues involved in the construction of an interactive, interoperable application, whose primary purpose is to be used as a virtual mockup. this graphic tool was tailored for machine vision application prototyping, to cope with metrological settings of large part assemblies. Some relevant aspects of designing interactive 3D applications will be discussed, including an account of some modern graphics libraries, particularly Java 3D. the achieved results, including some interesting byproducts of this work, to be publicly distributed soon, are also presented.

Video transition detection is an early step towards its high level segmentation and indexing. the visual rhythm is a technique used for reducing the amount of data in a video: it transforms a 3D data set (a time sequence of 2D frames) into a single 2D image. then, we can search for patterns in the 2D image corresponding to transitions in the initial video. the concept of longest common subsequence of a string is used to transform the 2D image into a 1D signal. Further, transition detection is performed using this 1D signal whose simpler and reduced representation leads to the definition of fast algorithms identifying the different transitions.
