the aim of this project is to develop a new approach for correction of bone deformities using a computer-aided surgery tool. We use a measurement based planning of correction on CT data and ultrasound based navigation system for real-time support of operation. We implement a single cut, close and open wedge osteotomy correction of complex three dimensional deformities. In the discussed method virtual reality and image processing techniques allows planning and supporting of the operation on a personal computers. the designed software prototype simplifies significantly the process of osteotomy planning and allows training and assisting a surgeon. the program reduces total time of the operation planning and increase accuracy of correction significantly.

Given the. pre- and post-contrast Gadolinium MR images of any body organ, the uptake curve estimation holds diagnostic utility in the area of medicine. the rate of absorption of the contrast agent (Gadolinium) by the lesions can tell the type of lesion it is, and also can be an indication of the malignancy stage. the differences in contrast enhancement rates can be used to distinguish between benign and malignant, lesions. Oncologists/radiologists and internists can classify the. type of malignancy by looking at the quantitative characteristics of the tissue signal enhancement. the slopes of the uptake curve can indicate the level and type of malignancy. Such a classification is called functional segmentation, this Marconi Internal Report presents the user-friendly MR Breast Perfusion(1) Software Analysis System (BPAS), based on Motif using C/C++ and X window libraries and runs on Digital Unix and XP1000 workstations supporting Unix and Linux Operating Systems, respectively. We tested our software on 20 patient studies from the data collect ed from two major sites in the United States and Europe.

From past literature it is evident that the search for self-dual codes has been hampered by the computational difficulty of generating the Hadamard matrices required. the use of the cocyclic construction of Hadamard matrices has permitted substantial cut-downs in the search time, but the search space still grows exponentially. Here we look at an adaptation of image-processing techniques for the restoration of damaged images for the purpose of sampling the search space systematically. the performance of this approach is evaluated for Hadamard matrices of small orders, where a full search is possible. the dihedral cocyclic Hadamard matrices obtained by this technique are used in the search for self-dual codes of length 40, 56 and 72. In addition to the extremal doubly-even [56, 28, 12] code, and two singlyeven [56, 28, 10] codes, we found a large collection of codes with only one codeword of minimum length. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

In the German-brazilian cooperation project Cyclops, we are building an integrated solution in order to capture the exponentially growing medical knowledge. the system is being developed in close cooperation with private radiological hospitals in Germany and Brazil. One aim is easy knowledge exchange between the medical partners in both countries. In this paper, we describe POKMAT (Process-oriented Knowledge MAnagement Tool) and its application to medical examination guidelines. We focus on the support of examination processes and automatic report generation in a DICOM environment. In the future, the system will be extended to an organizational memory of the practice.

Presents the IIADPS (Integrated image Access and Distributed processing Service) model, a software environment that allows radiological medical teams to have access to distributed image processing facilities in conformance to the DICOM 3.0 (Digital image Communications in Medicine) standard. the model allows one to remotely execute distributed image processing for diagnosis tasks on any low-cost equipment located on a local network or high-speed wide area network. the model was developed due to the enormous computational processing requirements normally posted to these tasks. Our approach allows low-cost equipment located in a network to be used, independent of the operating system, to execute distributed image processing, leading to a significant reduction in the processing time. this enables also hospitals which do not have radiological stations of high processing capability to use low-cost PC networks for this purpose.

Imaging has become an essential component in many fields of medical and laboratory research and clinical practice. Biologists study cells and generate 3D confocal microscopy data sets; virologists generate 3D reconstructions of viruses from micrographs; radiologists identify and quantify tumors from MRI and CT scans; and neuroscientists detect regional metabolic brain activity from PET and functional MRI scans. Analysis of these diverse image types requires sophisticated computerized quantification and visualization tools. Until recently, 3D visualization of images and quantitative analysis could only be performed using expensive UNIX workstations and customized software. Today, much of the visualization and analysis can be performed on an inexpensive desktop computer equipped with the appropriate graphics hardware and software. this paper introduces an extensible, platform-independent, general-purpose image processing and visualization program specifically designed to meet the needs of an Internet-linked medical research community. the application, named MIPAV (Medical image processing, Analysis and Visualization), enables clinical and quantitative analysis of medical images over the Internet. Using MIPAV's standard user interface and analysis tools, researcher and clinicians at remote sites can easily share research data and analyses, thereby enhancing their ability to study, diagnose, monitor and treat medical disorders.

Ensemble classification (the concurrent development of K independent classifications) is a common practice in Gibbs classification. In this paper, we describe an adaptation of R. Azencott's (1992) theorem on finite-time annealing, coupled with a limited merging protocol, which produces a final low-energy Gibbs classification of the Virtual Female (VF) data set.

Determines if a relationship exists between quantitative measures of digital retinal image quality, such as contrast and spatial resolution, and perceptual preferences of human graders. Ad-hoc digitization of retinal 35-mm color slides is less than optimal due to the unusual light scattering properties of the retina. Quantitative and qualitative measures of contrast and entropy were calculated for two test images. the resolution was determined by a scanning procedure. A pairwise comparison technique was adopted for measuring the medical technician's visual preference, and the results were analyzed using a formal quantitative methodology. the results showed that measures such as entropy and contrast generally correlated with the perceived image quality. A single, universally applicable set of scanning parameters was not found that would consistently produce the most preferred image for all image quality criteria.

We have developed and tested alternative transforms which create different zerotree structures. these new transforms can significantly improve the performance of image compression algorithms that use zerotrees without a significant modification of the latter. A new wavelet pyramid that results in an effective non-integer up- and down-sampling of the high-frequency sub-bands is presented in this paper. Non-integer sub-sampled pyramids can also be used to reduce the data dependency in the compression algorithm, and therefore reduce the execution time in a processor with multiple parallel processing units.
