thinking and inference are key essences of human intelligence as René Descartes stated that "I think therefore I am (1637)." the ultimate goal of General AI (GAI) [1], [2], [3], [4] is to enable machine thinking and inference [5], [6], [7], [8], [9] beyond data-based learning [10], [11] towards run-time intelligence generation [9], [12] driven by Autonomous Systems (AS) [13], [14] and cognitive robots [15]. Basic research on machine thinking is powered by Abstract Intelligence theories [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21] and Intelligent Mathematics (IM) [22], [23], [24], [25], [26], [27], [28], [29], [30], [31], [32] towards enabling symbiotic and collective intelligence [13], [33] and cognitive systems [34], [35], [36], [37], [38], [39].this keynote lecture presents theoretical foundations of and latest advances in machine thinking and inference driven by AS, GAI, and cognitive robots. Latest breakthroughs in IMs and run-time behavior generation by cognitive systems and AS are elaborated. Emerging paradigms of machine thinking autonomies are introduced to demonstrate the next generation of general AI and symbiotic intelligent systems. the advances in AS are expected to lead to a wide range of novel applications in deep machine thinking, machine knowledge learning, cognitive robots, inference computers, brain-inspired systems, and mission-critical intelligent systems.

Auction-Based Time Scheduling for Backscatter-Aided RF-Powered cognitive Radio Networks

this paper investigates the time scheduling for a backscatter-aided radio-frequency-powered cognitive radio network, where multiple secondary transmitters transmit data to the same secondary gateway in the backscatter mode and the harvest-then-transmit mode. With many secondary transmitters connected to the network, the total transmission demand of the secondary transmitters may frequently exceed the transmission capacity of the secondary network. As such, the secondary gateway is more likely to assign the time resource, i.e., the backscattering time in the backscatter mode and the transmission time in the harvest-then-transmit mode, to the secondary transmitters with higher transmission valuations. therefore, according to a variety of demand requirements from secondary transmitters, we design two auction-based time scheduling mechanisms for the time resource assignment. In the auctions, the secondary gateway acts as the seller as well as the auctioneer, and the secondary transmitters act as the buyers to bid for the time resource. We design the winner determination, the time scheduling, and the pricing schemes for both the proposed auction-based mechanisms. Furthermore, the economic properties, such as individual rationality and truthfulness, and the computational efficiency of our proposed mechanisms are analytically evaluated. the simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed mechanisms.

In this paper, a non-time-slotted cognitive radio network (CRN) is considered, where the primary user (PU) can change its state between transmission and mute at any time within one secondary user (SU) frame. In such a case, the traditional half-duplex sensing, which divides the secondary transmission process into the sensing and transmission stages, has a problem that fails to detect the PU transition during the transmission stage. To overcome this problem, the full-duplex sensing is adopted, which allows the SU to sense the spectrum and transmit signals simultaneously. the SU throughput per frame is evaluated to determine the optimal duration of the SU frame. Note that the throughput scales with the duration of the SU frame in the absence of the PU. However, the PU may start to transmit at any time within the SU frame. Hence, we formulate a throughput optimization problem with respect to the duration of the SU frame, under the constraint that the interference induced by the SU does not exceed the interference temperature of the PU, which is nonconvex. We further indicate that the optimal solution can be achieved when considering some practical constraints.

In this paper, models are created to predict the levels of ground level Ozone at particular locations based on the cross-correlation and spatial-correlation of different air pollutants whose readings are obtained from several different air quality monitoring stations in Gauteng province, South Africa, including the City of Johannesburg which is on the cusp of being one of the world's megacities and is currently the most polluted city in the country. Datasets spanning several years collected from the monitoring stations and transmitted through the Internet-of-things are used. Big data analytics and cognitive computing is used to get insights on the data and create models that can estimate levels of Ozone without requiring massive computational power or intense numerical analysis.

the Street Engine is a new, highly parallel computer architecture designed specifically for cognitive computing. It executes a parallel production language directly in hardware with the aim of realising advanced cognitive agents more power efficiently than conventional computers. this paper describes the Street Engine and its native Street Language with a focus on those aspects that are different from other computers and production systems. Case studies are described that demonstrate the function of the system.

the planning is one of the most important cognitive functions of the human beings. It is essential for the solution of mental and physical problems. this paper shows a conceptual and computational model of motor planning. It is based on recent findings of the human brain and how the human can develop several motor plans in order to solve their daily problems. the objective of our bio-inspired model is to develop appropriate mechanisms to endow virtual creatures with them, in order to emulate both internal and external processes of the human brain.

the efficient development of a Brain Computer Interface is based on rapid and effective discrimination of brain signals based on Electroencephalography (EEG) patterns. Any specific mental state or thinking activity results in specific pattern of brain signals. In this paper, a method has been proposed that combines recent advances in brain imaging and machine learning techniques to predict the cognitive state of the subjects whether they are feeling themselves in a safe or dangerous environment. this method is based on the mechanism of neuroception. the changes in this state are correlated with power modulations of oscillatory rhythms in the human EEG called ERD / ERS (Event-related De-synchronization / Synchronization). In order to predict these changes, it is of high significance to find the spatio-temporal distribution of EEG band-power modulations induced by the feeling of fear or danger.

Advance measurement of cognitive skills of a human being is a challenging research works because these skills have a great relation with emotions, age and gender. Working with emotions in cognitive computing is challenging but we cannot ignore the importance of cognitive skills during critical tasks as flying, fire fighting and driving public transports. During our previous published works we have conducted experiment on 8 participants of both genders. We have investigated that emotions, age, gender and cognitive skills have dependencies on one another. this paper investigate literature review of other researchers belong to psychology, neuroscience, HCI, as well as computer science which shows that emotions and EEG signal patterns have a great concern with cognitive skills. We have found evidence that emotions, age, gender and cognitive skills have great relations with each other.
