Reusable knowledge-level descriptions may further ease the deployment of DWM tools. We developed a multi-dimensional, ontology-based framework, and a collection of problem-solving methods, which enable to characterise DWM applications at an abstract level. We show that the heterogeneity and unboundedness of the web demands for some modifications of the problem-solving method paradigm used in the context of traditional artificial intelligence.

As part of its dissemination strategy it operates a public website. the online content can be accessed by navigating through categories or by a keyword-based, full text search engine. the work described in this paper aims at improving access to the content. We describe an approach, tools and techniques that allow building a semantic portal, where access is based on the meaning of concepts and relations of the international Affairs domain. the approach comprises an automatic ontology-based annotator, a semantic search engine with a natural language inter-face, a web publication tool allowing semantic navigation, and a 3D visualization component. the semantic portal is currently being tested by the Institute.

the adoption of standards for exchanging information across the web could present a new world of opportunities for data integration and aggregation systems. Although web Services simplify the discovery and access of information sources, the problem of semantic heterogeneity remains: how to find semantic correspondences within the data being integrated. In this paper, we propose OATS, a novel algorithm for schema matching that is specifically suited to web Service data aggregation. We show how probing web Services with a small set of related queries results in semantically correlated data instances which greatly simplifies the matching process, and demonstrate that the use of an ensemble of string distance metrics in matching data instances performs better than individual metrics. We also propose a method for adaptively combining distance metrics, and evaluate OATS on a large number of real-world web Service operations.

Functionality is one of the key concepts in understanding an artifact and in engineering domain knowledge. Although the importance of sharing of engineeringknowledge in industry has been widely recognized, from our experience with collaborative research with a production company, industrial engineers have had difficulty in sharing engineeringknowledge including functionality. To promote the sharing of the engineeringknowledge from the viewpoint of functionality, we have established an ontology-based knowledge modeling methodology for functional knowledge, which has been successfully deployed in a production company. It consists of two ontologies to capture functionality and the specifications for modeling processes. this paper summarizes these ontologies and its deployment, and discusses the modeling process based on the ontologies, which includes detailed modeling steps, types of functional knowledge, and ontological guidelines.

the configuration of web services is particularly hard given the heterogeneous, unreliable and open nature of the web. Furthermore, such composite web services are likely to be complex services, that will require adaptation for each specific use. Current approaches to web service configuration are often based on pre/post-condition-style reasoning, resulting in a planning-style approach to service configuration, configuring a composite web service "from scratch" every time. In this paper, we propose instead a knowledge-intensive brokering approach to the creation of composite web services. In our approach, we describe a complex web service as a fixed template, which must be configured for each specific use. web service configuration can then be regarded as parametric design, in which the parameters of the fixed template have to be instantiated with appropriate component services. During the configuration process, we exploit detailed knowledge about the template and the components, to obtain the required composite web service. We illustrate our proposal by applying it to a specific family of web services, namely "heuristic classification services". We have implemented a prototype of our knowledge-intensive broker and describe its execution in a concrete scenario.
