knowledge-intensive methods that can altogether be characterised as deductive web mining (DWM) already act as supporting technology for building the semantic web. Reusable knowledge-level descriptions may further ease the deployment of DWM tools. We developed a multi-dimensional, ontology-based framework, and a collection of problem-solving methods, which enable to characterise DWM applications at an abstract level. We show that the heterogeneity and unboundedness of the web demands for some modifications of the problem-solving method paradigm used in the context of traditional artificial intelligence.

Motivated by the need to extend features of semantic matchmaking between request and offer descriptions, a model is presented that exploits recently proposed non-standard inference services in Description Logics. the model allows to manage negotiable and strict constraints of a request (equivalently of an offer) while performing a matchmaking process, even if both the request and the offer are incompatible –some part of one description is in conflict with the other– and some constraints in one description are not specified in the other one. An algorithm is presented to compute both which part of the request should be retracted and which part of the offer has to be refined in order to make them completely satisfiable with each other. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

the Royal Institute Elcano(dagger) (Real Instituto Elcano) in Spain is a prestigious independent political institute whose mission is to comment on the political situation in the world focusing on its relation to Spain. As part of its dissemination strategy it operates a public website. the online content can be accessed by navigating through categories or by a keyword-based, full text search engine. the work described in this paper aims at improving access to the content. We describe an approach, tools and techniques that allow building a semantic portal, where access is based on the meaning of concepts and relations of the international Affairs domain. the approach comprises an automatic ontology-based annotator, a semantic search engine with a natural language inter-face, a web publication tool allowing semantic navigation, and a 3D visualization component. the semantic portal is currently being tested by the Institute.

the adoption of standards for exchanging information across the web could present a new world of opportunities for data integration and aggregation systems. Although web Services simplify the discovery and access of information sources, the problem of semantic heterogeneity remains: how to find semantic correspondences within the data being integrated. In this paper, we propose OATS, a novel algorithm for schema matching that is specifically suited to web Service data aggregation. We show how probing web Services with a small set of related queries results in semantically correlated data instances which greatly simplifies the matching process, and demonstrate that the use of an ensemble of string distance metrics in matching data instances performs better than individual metrics. We also propose a method for adaptively combining distance metrics, and evaluate OATS on a large number of real-world web Service operations.

the exploration of large information spaces is a difficult task, especially if the user is not familiar with the terminology used to describe information. Conceptual models of a domain in terms of thesauri or ontologies can leverage this problem to some extend. In order to be useful, there is a need for interactive tools for exploring large information sets based on conceptual knowledge. We present a thesaurus based browser that supports a mixed-initiative exploration of large online resources that provides support for thesaurus-based search and topic-based exploration of query results. We motivate the chosen exploration strategy the browser functionality, present the results of user studies and discuss future improvements of the browser. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

this work presents a proposal for an e-learning model that facilitate the learning process. Using a knowledge Management System as support, learning is planned through action, which results in the execution of tasks based on computer games strategies. Both contents of the course and tasks are included into the Institutional Memory of System. the design of this Institutional Memory shows as a basis for the system. Intelligent agents will adapt the tasks to the level and preferences of the student.

Functionality is one of the key concepts in understanding an artifact and in engineering domain knowledge. Although the importance of sharing of engineering knowledge in industry has been widely recognized, from our experience with collaborative research with a production company, industrial engineers have had difficulty in sharing engineering knowledge including functionality. To promote the sharing of the engineering knowledge from the viewpoint of functionality, we have established an ontology-based knowledge modeling methodology for functional knowledge, which has been successfully deployed in a production company. It consists of two ontologies to capture functionality and the specifications for modeling processes. this paper summarizes these ontologies and its deployment, and discusses the modeling process based on the ontologies, which includes detailed modeling steps, types of functional knowledge, and ontological guidelines.

A new incremental knowledge acquisition approach for the effective development of efficient problem solvers for combinatorial problems based on probabilistic search algorithms is proposed. the approach addresses the known problem of adapting probabilistic search algorithms, such as genetic algorithms or simulated annealing, by the introduction of domain knowledge. this is done by incrementally building a knowledge base that controls parts of the probabilistic algorithm, e.g. the fitness function and the mutation operators in a genetic algorithm. the probabilistic search algorithm is monitored by a human who makes recommendations on search strategy based on individual solution candidates. It is assumed that the human has a reasonable intuition of the search problem. the human adds rules to a knowledge base describing how candidate solutions can be improved, or characteristics of candidate solutions which he/she feels are likely or unlikely to lead to good solutions. Our framework is inspired by the idea of (Nested) Ripple Down Rules where humans provide exception rules to rules already existing in the knowledge base using concrete examples of inappropriate performance of the existing knowledge base. We present experiments on industrially relevant domains of channel routing as well as switchbox routing in VLSI design. We show very encouraging inital experimental results demonstrating that our approach can solve problems comparably well to other approaches. these other approaches use algorithms developed over decades, while we were able to develop an effective search procedure in a very short time. A brief discussion outlines our KA experience with these experiments. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

the configuration of web services is particularly hard given the heterogeneous, unreliable and open nature of the web. Furthermore, such composite web services are likely to be complex services, that will require adaptation for each specific use. Current approaches to web service configuration are often based on pre/post-condition-style reasoning, resulting in a planning-style approach to service configuration, configuring a composite web service "from scratch" every time. In this paper, we propose instead a knowledge-intensive brokering approach to the creation of composite web services. In our approach, we describe a complex web service as a fixed template, which must be configured for each specific use. web service configuration can then be regarded as parametric design, in which the parameters of the fixed template have to be instantiated with appropriate component services. During the configuration process, we exploit detailed knowledge about the template and the components, to obtain the required composite web service. We illustrate our proposal by applying it to a specific family of web services, namely "heuristic classification services". We have implemented a prototype of our knowledge-intensive broker and describe its execution in a concrete scenario.
