An agile organization adapts what they are building to match their customer's evolving needs. agile teams also adapt to changes in their organization's work environment. the latest change is the evolving environment of "hybrid" work - a mix of in-person and virtual staff. Team members might sometimes work together in the office, work from home, or work in other locations, and they may struggle to sustain a high level of collaboration and innovation. It isn't just pandemic social distancing - many of us want to work from home to eliminate our commute and spend more time with family. Are there learnings and best practices that organizations can use to become and stay effective in a hybrid world? An XP 2022 panel organized by Steven Fraser (Innoxec) discussed these questions in June 2022. the panel was facilitated by Hendrik Esser (Ericsson) and featured Alistair Cockburn (Heart of agile), Sandy Mamoli (Nomad8), Nils BredeMoe (SINTEF), Jaana Nyfjord (Spotify), and Darja Smite (Blekinge Institute of Technology).

agile project management is an established approach in software development and over time has also been adapted to different fields of work. While there are proven advantages for an agile development process, not all branches have incorporated agile methods in their project and development practices yet. One of these branches is the medical device industry. they often fall back on traditional, plan-based process models due to regulatory and normative requirements because of perceived conformity. ADmed is a process model that combines agile and plan-based processes while still adhering to the necessary regulatory requirements. In order to make it more accessible and approachable for a wide range of users it also incorporates adaptive elements, which are adjusted based on the user context. DevOps has been identified as an important aspect in the continuous deployment paradigm in practitioner communities and academic research circles. However, little has been presented to describe and formalize what it constitutes. the absence of such understanding means that the phenomenon will not be effectively communicated and its impact not understood in those two communities. this study investigates the elements that characterize the DevOps phenomenon using a literature survey and interviews with practitioners actively involved in the DevOps movement. Four main dimensions of DevOps are identified: collaboration, automation, measurement and monitoring. An initial conceptual framework is developed to communicate the phenomenon to practitioners and the scientific community as well as to facilitate input for future research.

Currently, many financial organizations must undergo a digital transformation. In this study, we investigated a transformation in a Norwegian fintech company with the aim of understanding how the tasks performed by business development can be better aligned with the work of cross-functional development teams. Specifically, we examined the enablers and barriers to coordination between business development and software product development in large-scale agile software development. the organization under study had 25 software product development teams that followed an in-house agile model. We collected data by conducting 13 interviews and collecting various documents. Our findings suggest that having cross-functional fora, having a common understanding of what business development is, and coaching the whole organization to be more agile can improve coordination between business and software development.

extreme programming has come a long way since its ?rst use in the C3 project almost 10 years ago. agile methods have found their way into the mainstream, and at the end of last year we saw the second edition of Kent Beck’s book on extreme programming, containing a major refactoring of XP. this year, the 6th international conference on extreme programming and agile processes in software engineering took place June 18–23 in She?eld. As in the yearsbefore, XP 2005provideda unique forum for industry and academic professionals to discuss their needs and ideas on extreme programming and - ile methodologies. these proceedings re?ect the activities during the conference which ranged from presentation of research papers, invited talks, posters and demonstrations, panels and activity sessions, to tutorials and workshops. - cluded are also papers from the Ph.D. and Master’s Symposium which provided a forum for young researchers to present their results and to get feedback. Asvariedastheactivities werethe topicsofthe conferencewhichcoveredthe presentationofnewandimprovedpractices,empiricalstudies,experiencereports and case studies, and last but not least the social aspects of agile methods. the papers and the activities went through a rigorous reviewing process. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and ***62paperssubmitted, only 22 were accepted as full papers.

the shift from sequential to agile software development originates from relatively small and co-located teams but soon gained prominence in larger organizations. How to apply and scale agile practices to fit the needs of larger projects has been studied to quite an extent in previous research. However, scaling agile beyond organizational boundaries, for instance in a software ecosystem context, raises additional challenges that existing studies and approaches do not yet investigate or address in great detail. For that reason, we conducted a case study in two software ecosystems that comprise several agile actors from different organizations and, thereby, scale development across organizational boundaries, in order to elaborate and understand their coordination challenges. Our results indicate that most of the identified challenges are caused by long communication paths and a lack of established processes to facilitate these paths. As a result, the participants in our study, among others, experience insufficient responsivity, insufficient communication of prioritizations and deliverables, and alterations or loss of information. As a consequence, agile practices need to be extended to fit the identified needs.

Stress is an important workplace issue, affecting both the health of individuals, and the health of organizations. Early advocacy for agile software Development suggested it might help avoid stress, with practices that emphasize a sustainable pace, and self-organizing teams. Our analysis of a 2014 survey, however, suggested that stress might still be commonplace in agile teams, especially for those with less experience. We also noticed that newcomers to agile emphasized technical, rather than collaborative, practices, and speculated this might explain the stress. We explored this in our analysis of a follow-up survey conducted in 2016, and report our findings in this paper. We show that there are a variety of factors involved, and that avoiding stress is associated with both collaborative and technical practices, and a range of outcomes.

agile software development is increasingly adopted by companies evolving and maintaining software products to support better planning and tracking the realization of user stories and features. While convincing success stories help to further spread the adoption of agile, mechatronics-driven companies need guidance to implement agile for non-software teams. In this comparative case study of three companies from the Nordic region, we systematically investigate expectations and challenges from scaling agile in organizations dealing with mechatronics development by conducting on-site workshops and surveys. Our findings show that all companies have already successfully implemented agile in their software teams. the expected main benefit of successfully scaling agile development is a faster time-to-market product development;however, the two main challenges are: (a) An inflexible test environment that inhibits fast feedback to changed or added features, and (b) the existing organizational structure including the company's mind-set that needs to be opened-up for agile principles.

A manual and explicit activity, the frequent selection and execution of tests requires considerable discipline. Our approach automatically derives a subset of tests based on actual modifications to the code base at hand, then continuously executes them transparently in the background, and so supports developers in instantly assessing the effect of their coding activities with respect to the overall set of unit tests to be passed. We apply techniques of selective regression testing, mainly relying on dynamic analysis. By taking advantage of the internal program representation available in IDEs, we do not need to rely on expensive comparisons of different program versions to detect modified code entities.

the implementation and release of software products has progressed from a lengthy delivery cycle - the methodical sequential path of "big bang" waterfall product delivery - to the rapid iterative release cycle supported by agile practices. Recently, "continuous delivery" has emerged as a strategy to accelerate product availability. However, only a systematic automation of the build, test and deployment processes in concert with superbly coordinated teams of software practitioners and business partners makes make this possible. However, trade-offs in the optimization of process may act to limit the innovativeness of product output. this panel will discuss approaches, challenges, risks, and strategies for using continuous delivery to competitive advantage.
