As part of our research concerning the integration of assurance case development with Scrum, we are planning to conduct semi-structured interviews with participants to gain feedback on a proposed approach. We will be interviewing individuals who have been involved with safety-critical systems development and agile methods. Participants will be presented with an overview of the challenges associated with applying the 4+1 software safety assurance principles to Scrum. Initial recommendations concerning how the principles can be accommodated within a Scrum development will also be presented. Participants will be led through a series of questions to gain feedback on the feasibility of the approach, and for an assessment as to whether the 4+1 principles can be addressed without compromising agility. the motivation behind this research is to gain a deeper insight into the difficulties experienced when integrating assurance case in to Scrum process. © the Author(s) 2016.

User stories in software engineering serve the purpose of discovering requirements and are used as units of system development. When applying stories in a project, two elements seem to be crucial: the ability to write coherent sequences of events and the ability to transform these sequences into code quickly and resourcefully. In this paper, these qualities are reflected in a notation that can be described as "stories with notions". this notation separates the story's sequence of events from the description of terms used in this sequence. Such a formal separation does not limit and rather enhances invention, at the same time rising the level of consistence, and facilitating translation into models of code. this translation maps domain notions into static code constructs (classes, interfaces) and also maps stories into dynamic sequences of messages. With such a mapping, programming becomes equivalent to skilled transformation of user stories, thus giving shorter development cycles. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

this paper describes a longitudinal study on how the XP methodology acts as a positive mood inducer to SE teams. the results provide empirical evidence of the ability of these practices to alleviate the positive feeling amongst SE teams and there is a strong relationship between the positive moods experienced by the teams and the number of the XP practices used. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

agile software development methods have been suggested as useful in many situations and contexts. However, only few (if any) experiences are available regarding the use of agile methods in embedded domain where the hardware sets tight requirements for the software. this development domain is arguably far away from the agile home ground. this paper explores the possibility of using agile development techniques in this environment and defines the requirements for new agile methods targeted to facilitate the development of embedded software. the findings are based on an empirical study over a period 12 months in the development of low-level telecommunications software. We maintain that by addressing the requirements we discovered, agile methods can be successful also in the embedded software domain. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Analytics is becoming known for providing exceptional opportunities to companies. However, companies are not utilizing its full potential despite the widespread benefits. In particular, analytics practices are imperceptible when we talk about small yet innovative companies like software startups. Nevertheless, startups' uncertain nature and focus on innovation make them promising candidates to increase the odds of success using analytics. In this paper, we investigate the key practices applied by software startups while conducting analytics. We address our research question through a multiple case study performed with three startup companies at distinct startup stages. thematic data analysis led us to observe nine analytics practices applied by these startups. the identified analytics practices span a spectrum of activities characterized by the analytics framework. Our findings provide insights for software startup companies to introduce or enhance analytics in their specialized context.

It is estimated that 85% of the defects in the developed software are originated from ambiguous, incomplete and wishful thinking software requirements. Natural language is often used to write software requirements specifications as well as user requirements. However, natural language specifications can be confusing and hard to understand. Some agile methodologists consider that acceptance tests are more precise and accurate sources of information about the customer's needs than descriptions in natural language. Several studies have addressed the use of acceptance tests as software requirements specification. therefore, none of the previous studies has performed experiments to compare the applicability of different acceptance testing techniques in order to support an organization in the selection of one technique over another. this paper addresses this problem reporting an experiment conducted with undergraduate students in Computer Science. this experiment compares the applicability of two acceptance testing techniques (Fit tables and Gherkin language) as software requirements specification. this research tries to answer three questions: (a) Which technique is the easiest to learn in order to specify acceptance test scenarios? (b) Which technique requires less effort to specify acceptance tests? (c) Which technique is the best one to communicate software requirements? the results show that there is no sufficient evidence to affirm that one technique is easier to specify test scenarios or better to communicate software requirements. Whereas, the comparison of effort in terms of time to specify acceptance testing shows that the mean time to specify test scenarios using Gherkin language is lower than Fit tables.

Managing non-functional requirements (NFRs) has been a challenge in software development for many years. these requirements are typically used to make important architectural decisions early in the project, which can be problematic if they are uncertain or unstable. When this uncertainty is not considered when designing the software architecture, changes are often costly and sometimes even unfeasible. Some empirical studies on the subject have already been carried out, but few have focused on the perspective of professionals with extensive experience on the changes and uncertainties of NFRs. this work aims to expand the understanding about the management, clarity and validation of NFRs to fill this gap in the literature. To achieve this goal, a survey was carried out with professionals to find out how NFRs were managed and validated. For the research design, instead of generic questions, the questionnaire focused on some specific types of NFRs to induce participants to recall and report concrete situations. As a result, 40 valid responses were obtained, most from professionals with more than 10 years of experience. the results reveal that a significant number of NFRs were defined after the delivery of software increments (more than 30%) and that revision and change occurred in about a third of the NFRs. Hence, this study presents evidence that NFRs, as the functional ones, can also be uncertain and change frequently, requiring agile approaches and techniques to evolve the software architecture to consider this uncertainty.

the integration of user-centred design and agile development is becoming increasingly common in companies and appears promising. However it may also present some critical points, or communication breakdowns, such as a variable interpretation of user involvement, a mismatch in the value of documentation and a misalignment in iterations. We refine these themes, emerging from both literature and previous fieldwork, by analysing a case study performed in an IT company that adopts both software engineering approaches, and we further extend the framework with a new theme related to task ownership. We argue that communication breakdowns can become focal points to drive action and decision for establishing an organisational context acknowledging the value of user involvement: to this end, we suggest the adoption of design thinking and the active engagement of the customer in embracing its values. © the Author(s) 2016.

With the advent of languages and tools dedicated to model-driven engineering (e.g., ATL, Kermeta, EMF), as well as reference metamodels (MOF, Ecore), model-driven development processes can be used easily. However, the maturity of a software engineering technology should be evaluated by the degree of use of traceability practices. One of the first major challenges consists in generating automatically trace information during a transformation process. Our contribution is a tool dedicated to infer traces during the execution of a model transformation. this tool is based on aspect oriented programming which permits us to isolate management of traces and imperative transformations code in a Java/EMF environment. A meta-model of nested traces allows the visualisation of traces as nested graphs which represent the traceability links and the control flow diagram of the execution. A model-to-model case study is proposed as an example to illustrate our contribution.

A number of qualitative studies find that team leadership is one essential success factor for evolving into a mature agile team. One such qualitative study suggests the 9-Factor theory of Scrum Master roles, which claims that the Scrum Master performs a set of 9 leadership roles which are transferred to the team over time [14]. We aimed at conducting a quantitative exploration that examines the presence and change of the 9-Factor theory in relation to team maturity. We conducted an online survey with 67 individuals at the conglomerate Robert Bosch GmbH. Descriptive statistics reveal that the Scrum Master and the agile team score differently on the 9 factors and that the Scrum Master role is most often distributed in teams that had been working between 3 and 5 months in an agile manner. Yet, we also find that the leadership roles predominantly remain with one dedicated Scrum Master. Based on our results we suggest to group the 9-Factor theory into three clusters: the Scrum Master is rather linked to psychological team factors (1), while the team tends to be linked to rather product-related factors (2). Organizational factors (3) are less often present. Our practical implications suggest an extension of the Scrum Master description. Furthermore, our study lays groundwork for future quantitative testing of leadership in agile teams.
