Context. Development of safety-critical systems is mostly governed by process-heavy paradigms, while increasing demands on flexibility and agility also reach this domain. Objectives. We wanted to explore in more detail the industrial needs and challenges when facing this trend. Method. We launched a qualitative survey, interviewing engineers from four companies in four different industry domains. Results. the survey identifies human factors (skills, experience, and attitudes) being key in safety-critical systems development, as well as good documentation. Certification cost is related to change frequency, which is limiting flexibility. Component reuse and iterative processes were found to increase adaptability to changing customer needs. Conclusions. We conclude that agile development and flexibility may co-exist with safety-critical software development, although there are specific challenges to address. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Educational digital game is nothing new as it has been implemented in multiple discipline and fields, similarly, its effectiveness is undoubtedly high, however the existing direction of research tend to focus to technical aspect of game development such as requirement engineering, algorithms, and UML processes and neglects the game design aspect of the educational game. this study proposes a novel game design methodology that combines agile-extreme programming software development life cycle with game design aspects by using expert testing as a method of validating the game design output of game prototype. this study uses Computer System Usability Questionnaire (CSUQ) as a method of measuring the game concept as well as a media and subject-matter evaluation questionnaire that measures multiple aspect of game design. the implementation of the proposed methodology is done in three game design steps of ideation, conceptualization, and prototyping. the subject-matter expert review yields a score of 82.2 in term of subject matter correctness and 88.5 in term of question appropriateness, while the media expert review yields a score of 65.7 for software engineering aspect, 65.7 for visual communication aspect, and 73.3 for media design aspect, while the overall CSUQ yields a score of 72.1. the general expert feedbacks on the designed prototype using the proposed methodology are also elaborated thoroughly. © 2019 IEEE.

the classification of landslides is the one of the most challenging topics because of the complexity of the relationships of various dynamic and uncertain factors and the physical gaining data processes. Landslide incidents frequently occur in the upper northern region of thailand due to its topography. the landslide classification method is proposed to capture the significant features from an extreme case of class-imbalance dataset. the imbalanced nature of some real-world data is one of the current challenges for machine learning researchers. A study area of this research covers an area of 25 square kilometers at Chiang Rai, in thailand which contains 30,408 non-landslide data and 1,077 landslide data. the percentage of landslide data is 3.54% of the total data. this paper proposed the solution of landslide classification given by extreme class-imbalance dataset. the proposed method has two main steps i.e., firstly, mitigating class-imbalance dataset. and secondly two-stage learning. Performance of the proposed method benchmarks the baseline, the logistic regression (LR), the random forest classifier (RFC) methods given by enhanced dataset. In the case of imbalance dataset, the one-class method is assessed against the proposed method along with the LR and the RFC methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has improved the landslide-risk prediction performance over the baseline, the LR, the RFC and the one-class SVM methods in terms of an average area under the curve scores by 0.48, 0.48, 0.03, and 0.06, respectively, in both enhanced dataset and imbalance dataset. © 2022 IEEE.

the objective of this paper is to report on the challenges and experiences gained during a three years multidisciplinary software development project in the insurance domain, focusing on the employed requirements process. Although, there has been consensus on an agile development process among the project partners, this approach stands in some contrast to the traditional (standardized or regulated) development processes commonly employed in the insurance domain, or general, in the public sector. the lessons learned of applying an agile requirements process under the conditions of traditional processes at the customer's site; geographically distributed offices of the customer and development team; diverse interests of involved customers' departments, administrative and operational staff; limited availability of field workers etc. are provided as recommendations for other research and development institutions. thereby, the viewpoint of each project partner, including the customer's perspective, is described

Developing software using a well-defined, well-understood process improves the likelihood of delivering a product with the required quality. Enhancing that process to meet recognised process standards, such as CMMI and ISO 9000, can further facilitate the development of complex systems in a repeatable and predictable way. there are tradeoffs involved, however. In particular, because projects differ in their scale, scope, and technical challenge, the same process will not suit all circumstances. agile approaches to development, such as extreme programming (XP), SCRUM and Crystal Methodologies, recognise this dilemma and suggest that processes be tailored to each situation. the research problem for postgraduate investigation is to determine in detail how this can be achieved successfully. this will include a consideration of how best to define, maintain and give access to a knowledge base recording details of process concepts, techniques and experience.

A bad software development process leads to wasted effort and inferior products. In order to improve a software process, it must be first understood. Our unique approach in this paper uses code and test changes to understand conformance to the Test Driven Development (TDD) process. We designed and implemented TDDViz, a tool that supports developers in better understanding how they conform to TDD. TDDViz supports this understanding by providing novel visualizations of developers’ TDD process. To enable TDDViz’s visualizations, we developed a novel automatic inferencer that identifies the phases that make up the TDD process solely based on code and test changes. We evaluate TDDViz using two complementary methods: a controlled experiment with 35 participants to evaluate the visualization, and a case study with 2601 TDD Sessions to evaluate the inference algorithm. the controlled experiment shows that, in comparison to existing visualizations, participants performed significantly better when using TDDViz to answer questions about code evolution. In addition, the case study shows that the inferencing algorithm in TDDViz infers TDD phases with an accuracy (F-measure) of 87%. © the Author(s) 2016.

In the last decade, Kanban has been promoted as a means for bringing visibility to work while improving the software development flow, team communication and collaboration. However, little empirical evidence exists regarding Kanban use in the software industry. this paper aims to investigate the factors that users perceive to be important for Kanban use. We conducted a survey in 2015 among Kanban practitioners in the LeanKanban LinkedIn community. the survey results consist of 146 responses from 27 different organisations, with all respondents being experienced in using Kanban. the results show that practitioners perceived Kanban as easy to learn and useful in individual and team work. they also consider organisational support and social influence to be important determinants for Kanban use. Respondents noted various perceived benefits for using Kanban, such as bringing visibility to work, helping to reduce work in progress, improving development flow, increasing team communication and facilitating coordination. Despite the benefits, participants also identified challenges to using Kanban, such as organisational support and culture, difficulties in Kanban implementation, lack of training and misunderstanding of key concepts. the paper summarises the results and includes a discussion of implications for effective deployment of Kanban before describing future research needs. © the Author(s) 2016.

the main aim of software engineering is to develop a software system, which fulfils the user requirements within time and budget constraints. this paper uses the multi-dimensional Resource Space Model to manage multiple types of software engineering processes and maps their features into multiple dimensions for supporting analysis, development and maintenance of software system. agile methods such as extreme programming, Crystal, Scrum, and others have attracted a lot of attention recently. agile methods stress early and continuous delivery of software, welcome changing requirements, and value early feedback from customers. agile methods seek to cut out inefficiency, bureaucracy, and anything that adds no value to a software product. Proponents of agile methods often see software specification and documentation as adding no value, which has led observers to conclude that agile development is nothing but unprincipled hacking, perhaps even an anarchic counter-reaction to bureaucratic, heavyweight software processes that demand ever more intermediate deliverables from developers. the purpose of this panel is to discuss under what circumstances agile methods work and don't work. Some of the key practices of agile methods are: scheduling according to feature priorities, incremental delivery of software, feedback from expert users, emphasis on face-to-face communication, pair development, minimalist design combined with refactoring, test-driven development, automated regression testing, daily integration, self-organizing teams, and periodic tuning of the methods. Working software is the primary measure of success. Find out what the latest practical experience with agile methods is and learn about the latest thinking in this area.

Selection of deep saline aquifers for CO2 storage mandates evaluating probable leakage rates. Estimation of fault leakage potential and most probable leakage rates is an integral component of this analysis in regions where faults are frequently present. Due to the nature of the processes involved in the creation of faults and the environmental settings in their immediate vicinity, a large variation in properties may exist in fault structure. these may involve the existence of extreme heterogeneities and fractures at various scales. Heterogeneities may result in local trapping of CO2 while fractures may facilitate CO2 migration. In this study we examine the effects of fault heterogeneities and fractures distributions on leakage rates, and their implications for storage integrity. Fault characteristics from Southern Louisiana have been used to create a representative fault model to be used in 3D reservoir simulations. In order to account for varying fault structure, a total of nine cases are modelled, six without a central impermeable core and three with an impermeable central core. the simulation results show that a complex set of flow features exist in fluid flow inside the fault structure. Under the modelled conditions the heterogeneities impede the upward motion of leaking CO2, but the existence of high permeability channels nullify the positive impacts of local capillary trapping in the fault damage zone. the fracture presence results in substantial leakage rates, compared to cases where fractures are absent. It is also observed that faults with large shale gouge ratios act as flow barriers unless a high degree of fracturing exists in the fault damage zone. Significant differences in flow occur inside the fractures and matrix, and leakage rates measured at one point in space may not represent the actual behavior. © 2018 GHGT 2018 - 14th international conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies.
