Wireless Sensor networks establish the foundation for a revolution in precision agriculture. As an integral part of smart farming systems, they can collect detailed information about crop health, air and soil conditions, and other relevant parameters to support agriculturists in their decision-making. Likewise, decentralized actuation (e.g., opening sprinkler valves) becomes possible when embedded sensor and actuator devices are deployed. From a technical point of view, smart farming systems strongly rely on embedded devices with wireless communication interfaces to cater for their convenient deployment. the operation of their wireless radio transceivers, however, often represents a significant energetic burden. this is particularly conspicuous when compared to the low-power microcontrollers that have become ubiquitous on current-generation sensing systems. We mitigate this issue by following an entirely different approach in this work, namely by exploiting the presence of electric fence energizers that are widely used in farming scenarios. Our solution called PULSEHV modulates data onto the high-voltage electric pulses emitted by fence energizers and thus enables broadcast communications at no extra overhead. As electrical fences commonly encircle entire patches of cropland, they act as large sending antennas;a proximity between deployed sensing devices and this antenna is implicitly ensured thereby. We practically demonstrate how PULSEHV accomplishes an effective data rate of 2.7 bit/s through the application of pulse position modulation. this limited throughput is counterbalanced by the fact that receiving the broadcast transmissions incurs virtually no energy overhead.

One challenge faced by sensor fusion strategy designed for sensor networks is to real-time achieve high reliability estimated data with the inaccuracy and fault in raw sensor measurements. In this paper, we present an online outlier clearance technique with low computational complexity and memory usage inspired by the nearest neighbor rule that can identify and remove the spurious data in the distributed multisensor fusion process. the proposed technique is fully localized and thus saves communication overhead as well as has a good extension as deployed nodes increasing. In this technique, we define a weighted average distance-based outlier factor criterion to detect the outlier and replace it with estimated data. With the help of contrast simulations, in which we adopt other two typical techniques, it illustrates that the proposed technique provides better performance in real-time clearing outlier during the sensor fusion process without the prior knowledge of outlier.

the LoRaWAN communication protocol is more and more used in the Internet of things (IoT) concept. Many research centers have addressed the problem of wireless sensor networks, thus making a sustained effort in increasing the performance of WSN networks. the IoT concept promises to revolutionize and change the way we do our daily business and allow us to overcome current challenges such as the energy crisis, resource depletion and environmental pollution. the potential of the IoT concept is immense and comes to solve the major challenges of the M2M (Machine-to-Machine) industry. LPWA (Low-Power Wide-Area) wireless networks come to complete the traditional wireless and short-range wireless communications technologies in order to fulfill the various requirements of IoT applications. LoRa modulation is using a chirp (Compressed High Intensity Radar Pulse) spread spectrum (CSS) technique which offer resilience to interference, great communication link budget, performance at low power while being resistant to multi-path propagation fading and Doppler effect. the main contribution of this paper is the performance evaluation and sustainability analysis of LoRa technology.

With the proliferation of sophisticated attacks against communication and information systems, existing protection mechanisms are becoming inefficient to guarantee an acceptable security level. Hence, new security techniques are being developed to keep up with the evolution of threats and exploits. One of the security issues that is being investigated by the research community is per-packet authentication, where security mechanisms should be implemented to enforce the authentication of a specific network flow. this paper mainly focuses on the use of biometric techniques since they offer a promising potential to enforce per-packet authentication policies in highly dynamic contexts. We provide a review of how biometrics have been proposed in the literature as an alternative to purely cryptographic mechanisms for per-packet authentication. the drawbacks of the existing are pointed out and discussed. We finally explore the research niches that will shape the evolution of this field in the near future.

In the last few years, data rate requirement on on-board satellite communication systems significantly grown. the need of high speed networks led to the birth of the SpaceFibre protocol, which is able to run at several Gigabit per second and operates over both optical fibre and copper cables. A key feature of SpaceFibre is the possibility to have multi lane link, which increases the overall achievable data rate and link reliability. the growing complexity of satellite payload communication systems requires the definition an accurate monitoring and testing system. In this paper a multi lane SpaceFibre interface integrated in a System on a Chip is presented as enabling technology for an electrical ground segment equipment.

In the 2.4 GHz unlicensed spectrum, the coexistence of WiFi, Bluetooth and IEEE 802.15.4 devices generates increased channel contention. Notably, low-power wireless networks experience packet loss and delays due to interference. To improve the performance of low-power wireless networks under interference, we propose a data driven proactive approach based on interference modeling for white space prediction. We leverage statistical analysis of real-world traces from two indoor environments characterized by varying channel conditions to identify interference patterns. We characterize interference in terms of Inter-Arrival Time (IAT) and number of interfering signals and use a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to accurately estimate the interference distribution as observed by the low-power wireless nodes. then, we use a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for white space prediction. Our validation w.r.t. real-world traces from two environments show that our GMM model can estimate interference with an accuracy higher than 94.7%. Moreover, the white space prediction evaluation shows an average accuracy of 97.7% and 89.5% across the two environments.

ASA systems (firewall, IDS, IPS) are probable to become communication bottlenecks in networks with growing network bandwidths. To alleviate this issue, we suggest to use Application-aware mechanism based on Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to bypass chosen traffic around firewalls. the services of Internet video sharing gained importance and expanded their share of the multimedia market. the Internet video should meet strict service quality (QoS) criteria to make the broadcasting of broadcast television a viable and comparable level of quality. However, since the Internet video relies on packet communication, it is subject to delays, transmission failures, loss of data and bandwidth restrictions that may have a catastrophic effect on the quality of multimedia.

In this paper, distributed saddle-points seeking problem is addressed in the scenario of general directed communication graphs, which does not require the weight-balanced condition. By utilizing the push-sum technique, a continuous-time multi-agent system is designed for computing a saddle point of a given convex-concave objective function in a distributed manner. It is proven that the proposed system is convergent to a saddle-point under a series of time-varying strongly connected communication graphs. Finally, numerical simulation results are provided to substantiate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

this paper studies the model uncertainties of Internet-based bilateral teleoperation systems under asymmetric time-varying delays. Generally, master and slave subsystems of a teleoperation process are robots with complex dynamics. this complexity makes the modelling process difficult, and usually with unavoidable uncertainties. Along with the latency through the communication network between the master and slave systems, the control problem becomes critical in terms of maintaining stability and performance of the system. Describing the modelling procedure and properties, this paper proposes an adaptive control scheme strengthened with a radial basis function (RBF) neural network (NN)-based algorithm to cope with the model uncertainties and also for stabilisation in the presence of time-varying delays. Using Lyapunov theorem, the stability analysis of the overall system under the proposed control method is investigated. Furthermore, simulation and experimental studies show the effectiveness and performance of this control for a teleoperation system.
