LTE-U is one of the promising solutions to the spectrum scarcity problem. LTE-U extends the benefits of LTE-A to the unlicensed 5 GHz band, mainly used by WiFi networks. the main challenge facing deploying the LTE-U is the coexistence between the LTE and WiFi systems such that the presence of LTE does not harm the WiFi network performance. In this paper, we introduce a bargaining-based cooperative coexistence framework that controls the LTE system access to the unlicensed band of the WiFi system. In this framework, LTE User Equipment (UE) utilizes its WiFi interfaces to act as a relay to forward the WiFi network packets using Decode and Forward (DF) cooperative communication to enhance the WiFi network performance. On return, the LTE system gains a welcomed access to the unlicensed band. the percentage of time the LTE system is allowed to access the unlicensed band is determined by bargaining theory solutions. We numerically evaluate the performance of the coexistence system where the results show that the proposed framework is beneficial for both the WiFi and LTE systems.

In this article, a new cluster head selection algorithm is proposed which is considered as a major modification of Centralized Energy Efficient Distance (CEED) algorithm, namely, Modified CEED (MOD-CEED). Actually, MOD-CEED balances the energy consumption between all sensor nodes by distributing the workload among them. More specifically, we compute the optimal number of cluster heads in the network based on the energy dissipation model of LEACH algorithm. Furthermore, we introduce an efficient cluster head selection technique by taking into consideration the residual energy of the sensor node and the distance between the sensor node and the Base Station. Our proposed algorithm is evaluated in terms of network lifetime using MATLAB simulator version 8.5. Simulation results summarize that MOD-CEED contributes efficiently in extending the network lifetime. Moreover, it has demonstrated its superiority over CEED and another relevant algorithm, namely, LEACH-DT.

Nice (July 14 2016), Berlin (December 19 2016), London (March 22 2017) and Stockholm (April 07 2017) - these four European metropoles are marked by a common occurrence burnt deep into the souls of all European citizens: recent terror attacks made by cars injuring several accidental people passing by. these attacks shall cause fear across Europe where state security bodies and units are trying to avoid those. Yet, there is already the technology to enhance the security of all people reinforce the effort aiming to prevent such accidents or car assaults: the autonomous emergency brake assist. this paper aims to open discussion about the (im) possibility of integrating the autonomous emergency brake assist in all cars and how it would impact such attacks. this paper seeks to better understand the highly multi-dimensional, multi-faceted challenges of meeting trust and reliability requirements in critical, disaster aftermath communication networks comprising heterogeneous groups of sensor equipped nodes. through emulation of a UK based flooding event in the South of England we show the impact of selfish and malicious nodes on disaster communications when disparate, distributed, and disconnected nodes are carrying sensitive messages relating to resource availability and need. To further support the need for trust-aware schemes in such environments we compare benchmark DTN protocols against our reliable, trust-aware framework, TACID, which penalises and excludes malicious nodes. We show that in disaster aftermath networks trust-aware schemes can significantly reduce the impact of malicious intermediary nodes and increase overall reliability whilst simultaneously maintaining message confidentiality.

In this paper, we investigate the case of inter-NoC communication between a network of NoC-based systems. We introduce NoC2, an NoC-based system with an Ethernet communication manager that provides better management for inter-NoC traffic. Current implementations of inter-NoC traffic management handle inter-NoC traffic using software running on top of a dedicated PE, whereas NoC2 is designed so that the software running on cores within the NoC is completely abstracted from inter-NoC traffic management. Experiments show that this kind of abstraction has better inter-NoC communication performance over generic NoC interfaced via Ethernet. Results suggest that NoC2 would perform better when it comes to scaling NoC-based systems by interfacing more NoC-based hardware. (C) 2017 the Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Using the minimum number of broadcasts to flood information in a vehicle network so that the maximum number of vehicles receives the information is a critical issue. Up to now, no research reports show the relationship between broadcast radius and success rate, the one-hop broadcast efficiency (i.e., the ratio of nodes that successfully received nodes to all nodes within the broadcast range). Determining an appropriate broadcast range for each broadcast is the most important function of flooding algorithms. In this paper, we investigate a function to obtain the broadcast efficiency under a given broadcast range. the function can be used to determine an optimal flood strategy so that the number of broadcasts is minimized as well as meet the required success ratio of receiving information in the vehicular network. To validate the function, we perform a Monte Carlo simulation. Simulation results show that the proposed function meet the results gotten from different cases and scenarios.

Community detection is a very useful method for network structural analysis. For some existing methods, a pre-specified number of communities or group sizes are required, while others rely on an optimized modularity function, Q, to identify the optimal points of division. However, modularity function has problems that affect the accuracy of resulting partitions. To address this problem, a new evaluation function is here proposed for community partition, called community coefficient S, which is based on node similarity distance. Based on this evaluation function, an efficient community detection method is also proposed, called S-cut and based on S, which can automatically identify the optimal partitions and the number of communities. the proposed method was tested on different types of networks without known true partitions, synthetic networks, benchmark real-world networks with ground-truth, and real-world networks. As well, S-cut was subsequently compared with other state-of-the-art partitioning methods. According to results, community coefficient S outperforms Q modularity function, and S-cut obtains a much higher accuracy level than the established algorithms. Unlike established community partitioning methods, which are based on modularity maximization, S-cut does not suffer from resolution limitations. In fact, the smaller the determined value for S is, the higher the resulting accuracy of partitions will be.

the current trend of population ageing leads to an increasingly larger population of older adults, who understandably desire to continue living an independent and fulfilling life in their home and within their communities. While traditionally seen as a societal issue, we are currently at a point where advancement in science and technology enables us to augment human help with ambient assisted living solutions. this paper is the result of research and development undertaken within the framework of a European Union research project targeting the development of a cyber-physical system for assisted living and home monitoring. the system integrates an unobtrusive network of wireless sensors with server software to provide ambient monitoring, location detection and real-time alerting. the present paper is focused on the system's intelligent software components. the first is a business rules engine that can be configured to send real-time alerts in the case of certain ambient conditions or when the location of the monitored person shows signification alteration from their usual movement patterns. the second component is an artificial intelligence-based location predictor, used to provide the monitored person's location. Discrepancies between actual and expected location are used by the rule engine to trigger real-time alerts to caregivers.

this paper present an ISFET readout circuit which is operated at 0.8 V supply and senses pit on both current and voltage accurately. this readout circuit requires one gate-source voltage and two drain-source voltage to operate in the weak inversion region. the power consumption at pH 7 is 2.5 nW. the output voltage of this readout circuit tracks with pH linearly while its current output is the exponential function to pit. the simulation results are conducted on a 0.35 mu m standard CMOS process.

In the new era, the demand of bandwidth hungry applications is increasing day by day. In the similar manner, it is going to be unfeasible for the electromagnetic spectrum to adjust the latest broadband channels. Free-space optical (FSO) communication is one of the most dominant optical wireless communication (OWC) systems which not only provides the huge bandwidth, it provides licence-free spectrum as well. the FSO link connectivity problems due to the varying nature of weather can be overcome by using a parallel radio channel to the FSO. A hybrid optical/radio communication system is proposed with the assumption of Gamma-Gamma fading distribution for the FSO and Rician distribution for the radio channel. the proposed communication system is optimized by maximizing the total mutual information (MI) under all weather conditions (e.g., rain, fog and cloud). the optimization is done over the modulation and the joint power. the mapping schemes of the respective channel are optimally selected to maximize the MI while allocating the optimum power to each channel. Simulation results show that the proposed system always provides best MI under varying weather, i.e., both for the FSO and radio channel. (C) 2017 the Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
