Fog computing has recently emerged as a new cyber foraging technique to offload resource-intensive tasks from mobile devices to mobile cloudlets in close proximity to end-users. Since the one-hop communication in the network edge is predominantly wireless, Wireless Mesh networks (WMNs) are being considered to build wireless fog networks. However, WMNs use distributed hop-by-hop routing protocols to reflect a partial visibility of the network, which limits their ability to perform global network management and monitoring needed by fog networks. Software Defined Networking (SDN) provides a centralized control and management of the entire network, which makes it a good candidate to support fog communication. Unfortunately, the SDN OpenFlow protocol does not support any functionalities for wireless fog networks as it is primarily targeted to wired networks. To address these issues, this paper presents a SDN-enabled wireless fog architecture that combines both OpenFlow and distributed wireless protocols. the proposed solution provides lower latency and efficient load balancing to offload the network load by enabling programmable fog routers.

Wireless Body Area networks (WBANs) are be-coming more and more popular. they are taking a significant proportion of the E-health market. WBANs rely on medical sensors, such as electrocardiography (ECG) and blood glucose, to continuously monitor the patient's physiological parameters. these signals are then forwarded, via a network infrastructure, to an analysis center. Despite their large deployment, security issues, mainly related to data privacy, are often considered as potential obstacles that might limit the extent of such solutions. this paper introduces a new approach to cope with data privacy in WBANs. Our major contribution is two-fold: (1) to reduce a noise and obtain correct data by improving Kalman filter;and (2) to propose a new secure privacy-preserving model based on homomorphic properties and chaotic cryptosystems. the proposed model conserves a real-time analytics for monitoring healthcare and preserves data confidentiality, data privacy, and data integrity.

Results concerning joint Spectrum Availability (SA) monitoring in the 5-10 MHz range of the High Frequency (HF) band (3-30 MHz), for a 24-hour period, in two locations situated in the central and western part of Romania are reported. Measurements have been realized simultaneously in the two locations, with similar USRP SDR-based equipment, for 24 hours on February 27, 2017. Results indicate that SO in the two locations present global similarities but differ in details.

In this paper, we propose the model of adaptive routing of heterogeneous traffic with respect to the current requirements regarding quality of service provisioning. the main idea is to develop the model for effective routing with high degree of flexibility that is achieved using a set of weighting coefficients which all together constitute the general routing metric. Based on this metric the routing system tries to achieve the best possible performance characteristics for every class of IP traffic. In reality, software-defined networks are the first in line where such dynamic routing is to be implemented. the core of such network is a managing device - software controller that is responsible for managing the structure of the network. In such case, this device is able to select optimal weighting coefficients for the generalized routing metric. In this paper, we present the diagram of the developed algorithm along with the description of its main steps. We also verify the proposed solution comparing it to the existing routing algorithms such as OSPF and EIGRP using the developed simulation tool.

the future Machine Type communication (MTC) forces new requirements on cellular networks such as low-power, low-cost, narrow band, and extended coverage. To support these features, the 3GPP LTE-A introduced a new user equipment (UE) category, namely CAT-M1 raising new challenges for the system designers. For instance, the device should be able to setup a call at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of -15 dB in the extended coverage mode with only one receive antenna and almost no frequency diversity. A new Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH), namely MPDCCH, is introduced to satisfy the new system requirements. the new design relies on signal repetition to enhance the detection performance under very low SNRs. While the performance of this control channel will mainly depend on the channel estimation techniques used for coherent equalization during transmission, the choice of such technique will affect both the complexity and the performance of the UE. In this paper, we propose a channel estimation for MPDCCH that depends on linear processing of the pilot symbols and first-order polynomial interpolations. In order to enhance the performance of this technique we use a de-noising step using decision-feedbacks to help the UE reduce the power consumption of the reception and detection of the MPDCCH. the proposed scheme is able to use less than 30% of the supported repetitions in enhanced coverage modes to achieve the required detection error rate at moderate and low SNRs.

By placing processing-capable devices at the edge of local wireless access networks, Edge Computing architectures have been recently proposed to connect mobile devices to computational power through a one-hop low-latency wireless link. In this paper, we propose a new design where edge assistance is used to control local data filtering at the mobile devices in bandwidth and energy constrained systems. We focus on real-time monitoring applications, where the video input from mobile devices is processed to centrally detect and recognize objects. the edge processor controls the activation and deactivation of local classifiers implemented by the mobile devices to remove useless portions of video frames. the objective is to adapt the video stream to time-varying bandwidth constraints, while minimizing the additional energy consumption introduced by local processing. To this end, an optimization problem is formulated for a loss function embodying the balance between the risk of violating the available bandwidth and the cost of overly-conservative data filtering. the edge assists the local decision by extracting parameters of the video, such as density of objects of interest in a frame, which influence the output of the sensor. Numerical results, obtained by performing a measurement campaign based on a real implementation, illustrate the tension between energy and bandwidth use for a Haar-feature based cascade classifier.

Here, we would like to study the efficiency and utilization of radio frequency (RF) transmission in wireless sensor networks. A new dual source queueing model (with finite and infinite numbers of sensors) is introduced in order to obtain the most frequently studied system performance characteristics (e.g. mean response time, average number of jobs waiting for transmission, and the utilization of the RF unit). the different types of sensors form the “sources” and the RF unit forms the “central servicing node” of this model. the elements of the sensor fields are classified according to their working purposes: the first class is the “Emergency” or “Special” class which is responsible to notify special rare events (e.g. fire alarms). the other class is the “Standard” class where sensors measure data from standard conventional events or occurrences (eg. motion detection, wind speed, level of darkness etc). For energy efficiency reasons the Central Unit (or Radio Frequency Unit - RFU) might switch into a reduced functioning mode. this reduced communication mode is for saving energy. the transmissions are closed in this mode. Returning from the reduced mode two cases are considered and two models are created to compare their steady-state system performance characteristics: In the first model, the RF transmission is available randomly to the sensor nodes (“Non-Controlled” case). In the other case, the Central Unit jobs which come from the Special class, can use the wireless service immediately (“Controlled” case).

Energy harvesting is a promising technology for the Internet of things (IoT) towards the goal of self-sustainability of the involved devices. However, the intermittent and unreliable nature of the harvested energy demands an intelligent management of devices' operation in order to ensure a sustained performance of the IoT application. In this work, we address the problem of maximizing the quality of the reported data under the constraints of energy harvesting, energy consumption and communication channel impairments. Specifically, we propose an energy-aware joint source-channel coding scheme that minimizes the expected data distortion, for realistic models of energy generation and of the energy spent by the device to process the data, when the communication is performed over a Rayleigh fading channel. the performance of the scheme is optimized by means of a Markov Decision Process framework.

Driving through intersections is potentially dangerous causing accidents and injury or death of the vehicle's conductor and/or his accompanists. thanks to technological advances, many systems based on Vehicular Ad hoc networks (VANET) are proposed to avoid collisions and improve road users' safety at intersections. In this paper, we investigate the use of Vehicle-To-Vehicle (V2V) communications and Real-Time Databases to mitigate collision risks, reduce the calculation time, and thus enhance safety at intersections. Specifically, we provide a new system, that we call Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance Persistent (CICAP) system to avoid potential accidents at intersections and minimize accident risk. Each vehicle stores its information as well as the nearby vehicles' information in a local Real-Time Database (RTDB). As it approaches to the intersection area, the vehicle queries its database and selects the target vehicles to execute the system. We used the VEINS framework to simulate different driving scenarios at urban intersections. Our simulation results confirm the proposed system's performance as a new cooperative intersection collision avoidance system based on V2V communication and RTDB.
