Energy harvesting is a promising technology for the Internet of things (IoT) towards the goal of self-sustainability of the involved devices. However, the intermittent and unreliable nature of the harvested energy demands an intelligent management of devices' operation in order to ensure a sustained performance of the IoT application. In this work, we address the problem of maximizing the quality of the reported data under the constraints of energy harvesting, energy consumption and communication channel impairments. Specifically, we propose an energy-aware joint source-channel coding scheme that minimizes the expected data distortion, for realistic models of energy generation and of the energy spent by the device to process the data, when the communication is performed over a Rayleigh fading channel. the performance of the scheme is optimized by means of a Markov Decision Process framework.

Driving through intersections is potentially dangerous causing accidents and injury or death of the vehicle's conductor and/or his accompanists. thanks to technological advances, many systems based on Vehicular Ad hoc networks (VANET) are proposed to avoid collisions and improve road users' safety at intersections. In this paper, we investigate the use of Vehicle-To-Vehicle (V2V) communications and Real-Time Databases to mitigate collision risks, reduce the calculation time, and thus enhance safety at intersections. Specifically, we provide a new system, that we call Cooperative Intersection Collision Avoidance Persistent (CICAP) system to avoid potential accidents at intersections and minimize accident risk. Each vehicle stores its information as well as the nearby vehicles' information in a local Real-Time Database (RTDB). As it approaches to the intersection area, the vehicle queries its database and selects the target vehicles to execute the system. We used the VEINS framework to simulate different driving scenarios at urban intersections. Our simulation results confirm the proposed system's performance as a new cooperative intersection collision avoidance system based on V2V communication and RTDB.

In this paper, the consensus problem for linear multi-agent systems subject to nonuniform time-varying communication delays and jointly connected switching networks is investigated. Both distributed dynamic state feedback control law and distributed dynamic output feedback control law are proposed. By establishing some technical lemmas, it is shown that the proposed distributed control laws can solve the consensus problem.

IP spoofing attacks create big problems in terms of security in Wireless Mesh networks IEEE 802.11s (WMNs). these attacks are accounted to be sent from infected hosts. In order to avoid these threats, IP traceback mechanisms are considered the main challenges to realize such a forensic analysis of the Internet traffic and to permit an elegantly tracing back to the correct source. In this paper, we present our novel approach of IP traceback. In fact, our solution is founded on the marking approach to trace proactively the source of spoofed packets in WMN;it uses a private and secure ICMP message to register the whole trace of the attack path. For validation objectives, we implemented our solution using the network simulator NS3 to test the performance and the efficiency of our proposed scheme cling to some collected evaluation metrics. the results prove that the attack path will be accurately constructed by means of our novel solution which achieves the purpose of traceability of the attack source.

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN) can be well suited in precision agriculture especially in rice fields to increase productivity and reduce risks. Real time data are collected from scalar, audio or video sensors to monitor the rice fields and to help farmers in the rice cultivation cycle. In this paper, a new clustering based routing protocol and an integer linear program was proposed, that balances the number of nodes in clusters. It aimed to balance the number of members in each cluster in order to reduce intra-cluster congestion as well as the number of congested cluster-heads and provide efficient multimedia data. Simulation results indicate that our proposed scheme outperforms other protocols proposed in the literature in terms of lifetime, number of members per cluster and the forwarded packets per CH.

Recently, Ambient Intelligence systems (AmI) in particular Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) are attracting intensive research due to a large variety of application scenarios and an urgent need for elderly in-home assistance. AAL is an emerging multi-disciplinary paradigm aiming at exploiting information and communication technologies in personal healthcare and telehealth systems for countering the effects of growing elderly population. AAL systems are developed to help elderly people living independently by monitoring their health status and providing caregivers with useful information. However, strong contributions are yet to be made on context binding of newly discovered sensors for providing dynamic or/and adaptive UI for caregivers, as the existing solutions (including framework, systems and platforms) are mainly focused on checking user operation history, browser history and applications that are most used by a user for prediction and display of the applications to an individual user. the aim of this paper is to propose a framework for making the adaptive UI from context information (real-time and historical data) that is collected from caregivers (primary user) and elderly people (secondary user). the collected data is processed to produce the contextual information in order to provide assistive services to each individual caregiver. To achieve this, the proposed framework collects the data and it uses a set of techniques (including system learning, decision making) and approaches (including ontology, user profiling) to integrate assistive services at runtime and enable their bindings to specific caregivers, in so doing improving the adaptability parameter of UI for the AAL.

Cellular deployments in the spectrum-rich mm-wave bands are anticipated to provide multi-Gbps connectivity in future 5G networks. Although measurements have demonstrated the feasibility of outdoor mm-wave links, the network-level opportunities and challenges of mm-wave cellular deployments are yet to be fully understood. In this paper we present a study of mm-wave urban network coverage and robustness - i.e. handover and beamsteering opportunities for supporting user mobility and resolving blockage of directional mm-wave links by moving obstacles. We use real 3D building data with ray tracing and investigate the impact of base station placement and density, building materials, and antenna directivity. Our results show that mm-wave networks can provide multi-Gbps connectivity locally, but that over 25% of the network area remains in outage even with dense pico-cellular deployments and that supporting mobility is very challenging. Moreover, primary link blockage can be resolved via handover or beamsteering to a secondary link at only up to 40% and 25% of high-throughput locations, respectively. Given these networking challenges, we argue that multi-frequency heterogeneous networks are the key to exploiting the great promise of mm-wave for future 5G deployments, i.e. mm-wave as a hotspot capacity booster, rather than a solution for comprehensive cellular coverage.

In RFID systems, the privacy problem has attracted increasing attention as the tags have extremely limited on-chip resources and may blindly respond to unauthorized readers. To protect the privacy, one widely used solution is to deploy one or more blocker tags to collide the RF signal sent from protected tags all the time. In this paper, we investigate the problem of tag identification in privacy-sensitive RFID systems when we have the authorized reader(s). Due to the presence of blocker tags, the tag identification becomes more challenging since the protected tags and blocker tags will always respond concurrently, leading to unreconciled collisions. To overcome this challenge, we in this paper propose two efficient tag identification protocols IIP and SIP, which meet three application requirements: privacy, accuracy, and efficiency. IIP iteratively deactivates blocking tags as well as labeling genuine tags, and finally identifies tags by avoiding all the unreconciled collisions. On top of IIP, SIP further avoids the slot waste by carrying out a filter to separate genuine tags from others in advance. Simulation results demonstrate that our protocols are able to guarantee any identification accuracy in a time-efficient and privacy-protected way.

With the growing complexity of networks and communications protocols that become increasingly enormous and extensive, we are confronted with the problem of covert channel that affects the confidentiality and integrity of data sent in the network. Covert channels also known as hidden channels can elude basic security systems such as Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) and firewalls. We propose in this work a method to monitor and detect the presence of hidden channels that are based on an essential monitoring protocol "Internet Control Message Protocol" (ICMP). We undergo the network traffic with a set of verifications ranging from simple fields verification to more complex pattern matching operations. To validate our idea, we have installed Ptunnel, a tool that allows to tunnel TCP connections to a remote host using ICMP echo request and reply packets. Our experimental results show the possibility to discover such malicious traffic with high performance.

the design and deployment of networked embedded systems is challenging. In particular, the environment in which the system operates has a severe impact on the final performance. Existing tools trade generality for specificity with arbitrary setups, e.g., in simulation, or specific configurations, e.g., in public testbeds. As a result, the peculiar effect of the target deployment scenario on the system performance can only be experienced by hand. Optimising and adapting the system to the operational environment becomes then a trial and error, impractical challenge. We introduce MOTION, a hybrid modelling technique able to characterise indoor wireless communication in the target environment from measurements and descriptions, e.g., maps, of the deployment area. By exploiting all available knowledge, our model is able to increase the achieved accuracy by up to 35% in our primary evaluation scenario with respect to conventional approaches. the computed models can then support traditional design and analysis tools in investigating the impact of arbitrary displacements of devices in the target environment. E.g., by controlling the relocation of a single node based on the information provided by the model, we were able to reduce the latency of a typical application by up to 21.4%. Ultimately, our work allows situated network optimisation of wireless systems where devices can be freely moved in the environment and the corresponding impact on the network performance can be estimated beforehand.
