In this tutorial paper, we study three specific applications: opinion formation in social networks, centrality measures in complex networks and estimation problems in large-scale power systems. these applications fall under a general framework which aims at the construction of algorithms for distributed computation over a network. the two key ingredients of randomization and time-averaging are used, together with a local gossip communication protocol, to obtain convergence of these distributed algorithms to the global synchronous dynamics. the profound transformation of large-scale Industrial Control systems (ICS), e.g., smart energy networks (Smart Grids), from a proprietary and isolated environment to a modern architecture brings several new challenges. Nowadays, ICS network designers need to accommodate a variety of devices and communication media/protocols with industry-specific requirements pertaining to real-time delivery of data packets, reliability, and resilience of communicationnetworks. therefore, this work proposes a novel network design methodology formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. the developed problem accounts for different data flows routed across an overlay network of concentrators and embodies traditional ICS design requirements defined as linear constraints. Furthermore, the MILP problem defines a K-resilience factor to ensure the installation of K back-up paths, and a linear reliability constraint adapted from the field of fuzzy logic optimization. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of the proposed MILP problem.

this paper presents pipelined consensus, an extension of pair-wise gossip-based consensus, for multi-agent systems using mesh networks. Each agent starts a new consensus in each round of gossiping, and stores the intermediate results for the previous k consensus in a pipeline message. After k rounds of gossiping, the results of the first consensus are ready. the pipeline keeps each consensus independent, so any errors only persist for k rounds. this makes pipelined consensus robust to many real-world problems that other algorithms cannot handle, including message loss, changes in network topology, sensor variance, and changes in agent population. the algorithm is fully distributed and self-stabilizing, and uses a communication message of fixed size. We demonstrate the efficiency of pipelined consensus in two scenarios: computing mean sensor values in a distributed sensor network, and computing a centroid estimate in a multi-robot system. We provide extensive simulation results, and real-world experiments with up to 24 agents. the algorithm produces accurate results, and handles all of the disturbances mentioned above.

In the agricultural domain, the main challenge is to present the new information and research to the farmers so that they can leverage the power of ICT to improve their agricultural practices and thereby the production. Huge amount of agriculture related data like weather data, soil health records, cropping pattern, location specific crop disease and pest are collected from different sources like services, remote satellites, and network of sensors. An agro advisory system presented in this paper helps to bridge the gap between farmers and the agriculture domain experts and developed for the cotton farmers in Gujarat region of India. the system consists of three basic components; Cotton Ontology, Web Services, and Mobile Application Development. the cotton ontology maintains domain knowledge required for answering farmer queries. the ontology contains information regarding crop, soil, cultivation process, disease, pest, and other relevant information. Protégé ontology development tool is used to develop this ontology. Appropriate Web services were built which help interactions with different data sources. the RESTful Web services are programmed in Java using the JAX-RS/Jersey API and the Eclipse EE IDE. the services are developed and deployed on a cloud based application server provided by Heroku. the Web services are invoked from the mobile device and in turn they connect to various data sources like Open Weather API, SQL database and the Ontologies. the farmers can use this application based on very simple android mobile interfaces. the prototype is developed using Java, Android SDK - v14 and Eclipse IDE.

High performance semiconductor optical modulators and photodetectors are key components of microwave photonic systems with low noise, high gain and high dynamic range performance. In this talk, novel n-i-n type-II heterostructure InGaAlAs/InAlAs multiple-quantum-barrier based semiconductor electro-optic modulators are introduced with low drive voltage and low waveguide loss. High efficiency, wide bandwidth photodetectors are proposed and realized with novel integrated uni-traveling-carrier photodiode structures.
