Different recommender systems suggest points of interest (POIs) based on data shared through geo-social networks (GSN). these systems are a very useful resource for mobile users, and an important business opportunity for advertisers. However, GSN data (e.g., the check-in of a person in a particular place) may be private information that a user may not want to release outside her social network. Even if the GSN service is trusted, and users' data is not directly released, an adversary may be able to reconstruct the data of a GSN user by mining the received recommendations. In this demo we will illustrate an implementation of the POI-Ti-Dico platform for privacy-conscious geo-social recommendation of POIs. the platform includes a server-side private recommender system and a mobile application for the Android framework. Recommendations are computed using a very large dataset of real check-ins.

Despite significant advancements in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy conservation remains one of the most important research challenges. Proper organization of nodes (clustering) is one of the major techniques to expand the lifespan of the whole network through aggregating data at the cluster head. the cluster head is the backbone of the entire cluster. that means if a cluster head fails to accomplish its function, the received and collected data by cluster head can be lost. Moreover, the energy consumption following direct communications from sources to base stations will be increased. In this paper, we propose a type-2 fuzzy based self-configurable cluster head selection (SCCH) approach to not only consider the selection criterion of the cluster head but also present the cluster backup approach. thus, in case of cluster failure, the system still works in an efficient way. the novelty of this protocol is the ability of handling communication uncertainty, which is an inherent operational aspect of sensor networks. the experiment results indicate SCCH performs better than other recently developed methods.

Data center networks (DCNs) generally adopt Clos network with crossbar middle switches to achieve non-blocking data switching among the servers, and the number of middle switches is proportional to the number of ports of the aggregation switches in a fixed manner. Besides, reconfiguration overhead of the switches is generally ignored, which may contradict the engineering practice. In this paper, we consider batch scheduling based packet switching in DCNs with reconfiguration overhead at each middle switch, which inevitably leads to packet delay. With existing state-of-the-art traffic matrix decomposition algorithms, we can generate a set of permutations, each of which stands for the configuration of a middle switch. By reconfiguring each middle switch to fulfill multiple configurations in parallel with others, we reveal that a tradeoff exists between packet delay and switch cost (denoted by the number of middle switches), while performance guaranteed switching with bounded packet delay can be achieved without any packet loss. Based on the tradeoff, we can minimize the number of middle switches (under a given packet delay bound) and an overall cost metric (by translating delay into a comparable cost factor), as well as formulating criterions for choosing a matrix decomposition algorithm. this provides a flexible way to reduce the number of middle switches by slightly enlarging the packet delay bound.

the existing channel variation (or fading) is one of the big challenges that affects the capacity of wireless networks. Recently, cooperative communication has been considered as an effective way to improve the communication reliability. In this paper, a novel medium access control (MAC) protocol, called CMMI, has been proposed for exploiting the opportunities of cooperative transmissions to improve link reliability in wireless networks. Based on the new proposed multi-channel model, the proposed CMMI fully utilizes the wireless spectrum for finding the cooperative nodes and then collaboratively recover the failure transmissions. Simulation results show that the proposed CMMI can obviously improve the network performance in terms of network throughput, average packet delay and packet delivery ratio.

Vehicular communications have become an attraction field to researchers in different sectors;from electronic systems, then communication technologies, automotive control systems, to network topology developers. Control, audio and video signals are circulated within a vehicle using wired and wireless networks. Optical Wireless (OW) technology has started to be used in infra-satellite links and aircraft, since it offers high bandwidth and resistance to electromagnetic interference (EM). As more electronic systems are being within a vehicle, EM exists, especially in the engine compartment. thus it is an attractive proposition to use OW in cars. In this paper, a review of control and multimedia systems in vehicles is presented. An overview of implementing OW in vehicles for future automotive communication technologies will also be discussed.

Dataflow process networks (DPN) have been proposed as a programming model for distributed parallel systemsthat have communication paths with unpredictable latencies. the purely data-driven execution of DPNs does not require a global coordination and therefore allows one to easily map DPNs to many parallel hardware and software architectures with distributed memories. Problems due to shared memory communication like data races do not exist since the communication is done via point-to-point FIFO buffers between the process nodes. On the other hand, this distributed programming model leads to high communication costs if large data structures like arrays have to be communicated between nodes. this paper addresses the reduction of the communication costs due to arrays that are processed by - and therefore sent between - DPN nodes. the presented methods are given at a high level of abstraction and do not impose specific constraints on the used target architectures. Our experimental results show clearly the advantage of our approach compared to the standard message passing between the nodes.

Performance analyses, using a modified Chernoff bound on the bit error rate, are given for an optically preamplified digital pulse position modulation (DPPM) free-space optical (FSO) communication system impaired by pointing error and atmospheric turbulence combined, in addition to the amplified spontaneous emission noise arising from the optical amplification. An improvement of about 7 9 dB (depending on the turbulence level) can be potentially achieved using the DPPM scheme over an equivalent on off keyed non-return-to-zero based F SO system.
