SpiNNaker is a custom-made architecture designated to model large-scale spiking neural nets. Noe of the most significant characteristics of neural nets is their extreme communication needs;each neuron propagates its activation to thousands of other neurons. this paper shows analytical proof that the novel multicast router in SpiNNaker is a better solution for simulating neural nets than more powerful point-to-point routers such as those found on datacenters or high performance computing systems, even when it has significantly lower requirements in terms of complexity, area and power. First, we characterised the utilization of resources required by both multicast and unicast networks. then we derived the band-width needs of different communication architectures. Finally, we derived the amount of neurons the different networks can support. From these analyses we determined that the multicast communications adopted in SpiNNaker will be able to support the target application under the expected operated operation conditions.

Coherent communications have become a commercial reality with the deployment of 40 G and 100 G systems using Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) in the core network. In the next evolution of these systems higher order modulation formats have the potential to significantly increase capacity while maintaining the baud rate at levels which allow the use of readily available lower cost electro-optics and electronics. Higher order modulation schemes have a lower tolerance to phase noise making low linewidth lasers a requirement. In this work we will present results from using different single mode and wavelength tuneable laser devices in optical coherent systems.

Cooperative synchronization of a multi-hop wireless communication networks is investigated in this paper. First, a basic and typical dual-hop network which consists of coupled chaotic systems is discussed, and synchronization has been achieved via the nonlinear integral control method. On the basis of this model, the study of the cooperative synchronization is extended to the multi-hop networks. Two network topologies, namely the MESH network structure and the MOORE neighborhood structure, are considered. Also, the nonlinear feedback integral method is used as the control law. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of modeling the communication networks and the perfect synchronization of the multi-hop network consisting of chaotic nodes. © 2012 IEEE.

In Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), the current three primary wireless network routings, i.e. DSDV, AODV and DSR, are widely utilized to propagate information. In this paper, we study such a scenario: in the network which consists of both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, vehicles are moving on highway. When the vehicle enters into the blind area between two base stations, it is trapped because of various reasons. However, the vehicle needs to connect to the Internet urgently. In order to assist this trapped vehicle to maintain its network communication as possible, we propose an interactive network model and relevant scheme - Moving Vehicle Assistance (MVA), which expropriates part of communication capabilities of the passing relay vehicles to assist the trapped vehicle to propagate data in the way of Store-Carry-Forward. We simulate the MVA model and scheme in NS2. the simulation results show that the AODV and DSR routings perform not well in the blind area of VANET. And the proposed MVA scheme achieves up to an approximate 450% and 300% increment in the average amount of network flow performance and in the average bandwidth performance than DSDV routing, respectively.

Due to their out-standing performance (huge bandwidth and high signal quality), optical communications have become the standardized technologies suited for long reach and high bit-rate communication systems. Nevertheless, the traditional incompatibility of CMOS with the optical technology, and the difficulty for all-optical implementation of some key functions such as buffering and header processing, have been hindering the application of optical communications for short-range communications. However, the advent of nanophotonics is paving the way for such approach by enabling CMOS compatibility and the possibility of building out micro- and nanoscale optical components. In this paper, we do a first overview of the state-of-the-art in graphene and silicon nanophotonics, and its utilization for on-chip communication in multicore processors, to then propose a hybrid wireless/optical-wired architecture based on both a photonic Network-on-Chip (NoC) and a wireless NoC. the former for transferring heavy flows of data, the latter for supporting the control plane of the whole network, and carrying light data flows.

In P2P systems,especially in mobile environment,participating nodes may connect to or disconnect from the system *** user-driven dynamic membership problem,called churn,may significantly reduce the routing robustness of a structured P2P system because of its fully-decentralized routing *** existing structured P2P systems use constant periodic maintenance approaches with static parameters to improve the routing robustness under ***,the cost- effectiveness of this strategy mostly depends on the churn rate of the *** real dynamic P2P systems,using static parameters may result in unnecessary bandwidth cost under low churn,or low lookup success rate under high *** propose a flexible and cost-efficient method for structured P2P networks under churn taking the evolution of churn conditions into ***-tuning parameters are applied for failure detection and routing table maintenance by using the online time of nodes for predicting node *** achieve better cost- effectiveness,by allocating more maintenance bandwidth for those nodes considered unstable and less bandwidth for the long- lived *** results show that the proposed approach outperforms the traditional periodic maintenance method both under low churn and high *** low churn,less bandwidth is consumed while the lookup success rate almost remains at the same *** high churn,the lookup success rate is higher with an acceptable amount of additional bandwidth consumed.

the characteristics of a ground-to-ground radar link maintenance protocol for airfield communications are investigated. Such links are typically made at high speed over optical fibre in modern airfields and an appropriate method to identify both known traffic and unauthorised use is extremely important. Here, the pattern recognition technique of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) is employed for classification, recognising trends by supervised learning and using them to identify anomalies. the work is motive by the EU SESAR project which is developing a unified digital communication platform for air traffic management. To achieve this, it is necessary to gather network information and present it in segments. Packet transmission possesses two key parameters, packet payload and the time interval between transmissions. A simulation including these elements was performed, and SVM employed to search for traffic patterns. this was successful in that two known patterns were identified using a nonlinear polynomial SVM kernel. It is thus shown that it is possible to monitor discrete statistical traffic flows using SVM. Further payload types could be classified as anomalies enabling a significant reduction in the workload of the network engineer to monitor a critical optical network.

In mobile ad hoc network (MANET), mobile nodes should use the other nodes and trust them for transmitting data. Due to lack of central control, an intermediate node may drop the data packets because of being selfish or malicious. In this paper, the problem of routing misbehavior is addressed. the new acknowledgement-based scheme, called NEWACK, is introduced based on the DSR protocol. Special method for detecting the collusion attacks (cooperating between malicious nodes), is developed. Simulation results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme and compare it with the other methods.

Online videos are one of the most prevalent forms of communication over the Internet because humans are attracted to visual stimulations. Multimedia services, especially real-time services, require data to arrive on time. Unlike any other transmissions, video streaming needs to be monitored and adapted to bandwidth, when the video stream passes through the best-effort environment. A guaranteed QoS (Quality of Service) is essential in all real-time applications. this paper presents a context-aware mechanism, which improves the QoS of real time video transmission, over wireless networks. this proposed RSQA system ensures video availability even when the bandwidth is low. Drawbacks to other solutions for saving bandwidth in real-time include being: 1) too expensive due to requiring a priority based router (in the case of proxy based and frame prioritization approaches);2) too complex;3) not appropriate for real-time systems. this RSQA system succeeds in being of low complexity, appropriate for real-time systems and cost effective (not requiring a priority based router to function). this RSQA system is independent of wireless technology making, thus it appropriate for use in a heterogeneous environment as well. Whenever a user experiences packet loss or a delay in receiving a video, the server will be notified about the congestion and decrease the video quality to make the video available at low bandwidth. the decision regarding the needed QoS parameters and the rate control is based on context information (available bandwidth). the RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) based streaming is simulated and verified by an Eclipse simulator and Java using an MJPEG standard. Results show that the QoS parameters of video transmission were improved considerably by this RSQA system.

One of the possible solutions is to use space division multiplexing in order to overcome the capacity crunch. Few mode fibers (FMF) have attracted a lot of attention in the recent years, however still a lot of research is required to enable transmission over FMF. One of the problems with the realization of FMF transmission is that these fibers have a modal dispersion which results in high number of equalization taps which might make the FMFs impractical. the complexities of common equalizer schemes are analyzed in this paper in terms of complex multiplications per bit. It is found that training symbol based equalizers have significantly lower complexity compared to blind approaches for long-haul transmission. Among the training symbol based schemes, OFDM requires the lowest complexity for crosstalk compensation in a mode-division multiplexed receiver. the main challenge for training symbol based approaches is the increased data rate due to extra overhead required for cyclic prefix and training symbols. In order to achieve 2000 km transmission, the modal dispersion must be below 6 ps/km when the OFDM specific overhead is limited to 10%. this shows that for few mode transmission systems the reduction of modal delay is essential to enable long-haul performance.
