this paper presents an innovative high-bandwidth access network architecture that offers transparent transport services for fixed and mobile applications. Key to this is the development of a high-functionality, low-energy active remote node (ARN) offering high-speed switching and statistical-multiplexing features for maximal exploitation of available network resources, together with radio, wavelength conversion and legacy systems compatibility. the proposed architecture features an optimized and sophisticated management and control plane, allowing service providers to transparently monitor their connections, so simplifying network management and application interoperability with heterogeneous networks. Although inherently future-proofed, the proposed network platform is also intrinsically compatible with existing PON and wireless access solutions: fixed fibre and radio access, LTE and beyond, and legacy services (CATV and DSL technologies) can all be delivered and managed in an open access environment. In addition, its low-energy and low-cost design offers an environmentally sustainable technology solution, whilst acting as a critical enabler for new smart services, e-society initiatives, and intelligent lifestyle management.

Cooperative communication has been recently proposed in wireless communication systems for exploring the inherent spatial diversity in relay *** this work we investigate the performance of selecting best protocol between amplify and forward (AF) and decode and forward (DF) in multiple relay *** the selection scheme,the best protocol between AF and DF is selected depending on source– relay links *** we derive the asymptotic closed form expression for the symbol error rate (SER) for the system under studied and show that our scheme maintains full diversity order and is better than fixed *** results are also presented to validate the theoretical analysis.

Triple play convergence is now one of the important national strategies in China. Stimulated by the need of building a network that is capable of both Telecom and broadcasting services, an optical transport network (OTN) testbed is planed and deployed in Eastern China from 2009 to 2011. this testbed demonstrates the state of the art technologies in optical transport network design. It also features functions like role based network/resource management and network virtualization. In this paper, we will introduce the background of this effort and detailed design in network control, management and virtualization. We will also present our measurement experiences and results in this testbed regarding dynamic service provisioning, along with our recent efforts in standardizing performance metrics and measurement methodologies.

Due to their out-standing performance (huge bandwidth and high signal quality), optical communications have become the standardized technologies suited for long reach and high bit-rate communication systems. Nevertheless, the traditional incompatibility of CMOS with the optical technology, and the difficulty for all-optical implementation of some key functions such as buffering and header processing, have been hindering the application of optical communications for short-range communications. However, the advent of nanophotonics is paving the way for such approach by enabling CMOS compatibility and the possibility of building out micro-and nanoscale optical components. In this paper, we do a first overview of the state-of-the-art in graphene and silicon nanophotonics, and its utilization for on-chip communication in multicore processors, to then propose a hybrid wireless/optical-wired architecture based on both a photonic Network-on-Chip (NoC) and a wireless NoC. the former for transferring heavy flows of data, the latter for supporting the control plane of the whole network, and carrying light data flows.

Currently Vehicular Ad-hoc networks (VANET) are receiving great attention by researchers because of their potentiality for developing innovative applications in the Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) context and are expected to be a widely adopted technology in the medium/long term. However, for the near future, the adoption of this technology is difficult since its performance relies excessively on its penetration rate into vehicles. In addition VANET are only able to gather information about the road while vehicles equipped with the appropriate technology are nearby, otherwise information can only be obtained by expensive and therefore scarcely deployed Roadside Units (RSU). Wireless Sensor networks (WSN), on the contrary, can be deployed along a road (or in a parking lot area) with very little installation and maintenance costs. they can be used to constantly acquire information related to the road condition and the traffic state and, in addition, execute collaborative in-road processing for safety purposes. these properties make WSN an effective complement to VANET, since they can cooperate with them in order to mitigate their limitations. On the other hand, WSN deployments can also benefit from VANET and other communication technologies such as cellular networks in order to disseminate the information gathered to distant places. Consequently, WSN can also play a major role in ITS.

Possessing dependable communications throughout large-scale disaster circumstances is of principal significance in today's world. Especially, propagation of vital information to the survivors and the rescue groups is an essential part of crisis communications. Given that the normal communication channels generally turn into non-functional in large-scale disasters, a provisional communication is required. thus, relay networks are proper for such situations where forward stations can be suitably situated within the disaster district to increase the coverage of the stations and enhance communication dependability. Recently, the performance analysis of the wireless communication systems that deteriorated by fading, and noise has received great attention. We propose square quadrature amplitude modulation (S-QAM) for consumed power enhancement and Cooperative communication for Ad hoc and sensor networks (WASN) to combat Rician fading. the proposed modulation technique in co-operative communication situation is evaluated by an analytical approach and simulations. the performance analysis with different Rician k-factor and diversity order with Matlab simulation is done. We observe bit error rate gain performance, in which there is a considerable gain in performance accomplished by increasing diversity order L, while the gain in performance that achieved by the increase in k is extremely small without diversity order. We conclude that using of cooperating communication can enhance the Rician fading in disaster situation and helps to save human lives.

Data transmission over multi-mode fibers (MMF) has the potential to increase considerably the capacity limit of singlemode fibers (SMF) by exploiting the spatial dimension. Spatial multiplex using standard graded-index multimode fibers (GI-MMF) in combination with OOK modulation and direct detection might be advantageous for short haul transmission systems. the application of principal mode groups provides the possibility to eliminate the need for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processing, especially if a fiber supporting a large number of modes is used for the transmission. Spatial multiplex using principal mode groups as individual transmission channels has been experimentally investigated at the example of a data transmission over a 2 km long OM4 graded-index multi-mode fiber. Eight principal mode groups have been identified being suitable as spatially separated transmission channels for 10 Gbit/s data at a wavelength of 1550 nm.

A significant number of elders live with memory impairment issues, as a result of the normal aging process. therefore various kinds of supporting systems have been developed to help the elders, who have mild memory problems. In this paper we propose a Smart Reminder System for reminding forgotten complex activities, in home environment. Subjected complex activities are the activities, which should be completed as originally intended, after they are initiated. Due to strong relationship among initiation and conclusion activities, those activities are called as “Coupling Activities” in this paper. Reminders for forgotten Coupling Activities are predicted according to the user's current behaviour, current location and past activity patterns. therefore wearable sensors are used to gather required data for identifying user's context. A reason for forgetting also is predicted with the reminder. Reminders are predicted with minimum supervision of the user, as the system learns the user's dynamic behaviour by itself. Proposed Smart Reminder System could achieve 80% average accuracy rate for reminder prediction in a system evaluation, which was done using four subjects.

Mobile communication networks account for 0.5% of the global energy consumption, a value that is expected to double within the next five years. For this reason, means of reducing the energy consumption in cellular mobile radio networks has recently gained great interest within the research community. In mobile networks the backhaul contribution to the total power consumption is usually neglected because of its limited impact compared to that of the radio base stations. However, meeting the almost exponential increase in mobile data traffic requires a large number of (mainly small) base stations. this means that backhaul networks will take a significant share of the cost and the energy consumption in future systems. their actual contribution to the energy consumption will depend on the radio base station deployment scenario as well as on the technology and topology choices for the backhaul itself. this paper presents an initial assessment of the power consumption of two established backhaul technologies, i.e., fiber and microwave. For the microwave case, three backhaul topologies are considered, i.e., tree, ring and star, while for the fiber case only one topology is analysed, i.e., a dedicated point-to-point star. the presented results, assuming off-the-shelf products and based on todays network capacity levels, confirm the importance of considering the backhaul when minimizing the total power consumption in heterogeneous network scenarios. they also show the impact of the basic technology and topology choices of the backhaul for minimizing total power consumption.

the development of wireless networks, mobile devices and sensor technology during the past 20 years has continually affected the creation of new applications based on emergent technologies. By combining the advantages of established technologies with these new approaches and furthermore adapting those criteria to different user needs and application scenarios, including the location of users, we are able to extend existing applications with new mobile components and services. this paper presents a teaching methodology for a course of Near Field communication for a master degree program and some examples of research projects in this area. the course "Near Field communication" was introduced at the University of Applied Sciences Berlin in 2009 and has been taught by Professors from HTW Berlin and ONPU Odessa. Additionally, this paper presents two different approaches to visualise information from culture, media and creative industries by using RFID-based tracking and identification and NFC technology. In particular, the differences in the processing of system events, delivery of required information and the implemented infrastructure will be discussed and evaluated.
