Rich and attractive mobile services have been developed as result of technological advances and emergent mobile business models. Product launching has been improved through packaging and orchestration of services components using service composition techniques. the design of charging systems, which can explore partner information, is a strong enabler for mobile composite services ecosystems. the authors present the use of inter-domain contextual information contained in composite services chains as a new input to charging. they propose a mechanism to support inter-domain contextual information dissemination towards charging systems. the solution is based on diameter extensions and is in conformance to standard charging models.

Mobile communication has been dominated by vertically integrated service provision in an `operator centric model', which has been highly bound to voice and SMS services and organized in a monopolistic competition between few Mobile network operators, MVNOs and SPs. In the recent years we have witnessed a radical change driven by the introduction and further development of smartphones, where we see emergence of new business models, including `device centric models', where the user can get access to new applications and services by connecting to the device manufacturers' app stores and the like. One of the main drivers of this change is the advanced capabilities of the smartphones enabling the mobile devices to reap the advantages of the convergence process and bring advanced internet applications and services to the mobile devices. However, the device market is dominated by a number of different technological platforms, including different Operating systems (OS) and `software development platforms', resulting in a variety of different competing solutions on the market driven by different actors. the aim of this paper is to give a comparative analysis of these technological platforms and identify their strengths and weaknesses seen from user and market perspective.

In the industrial and automotive appliances, distributed systems are more and more frequently used. they require the coordinate action of several units for the systems to operate correctly. therefore the units must exchange each other information on their activities and this is done through serial communicationnetworks. CAN is a simple protocol that rules the operation of these networks. However, the native CAN does not have such features like determinism and fault tolerance, which are required by safety-critical appliances. To get round of the CAN limitations, there are two solutions, namely the recourse to the so-called time-triggered (TT) protocols or the supplement of the native CAN with ad-hoc developed application protocols. After reviewing the CAN limitations, the paper discusses at first the TT protocols and then the application protocols enhancing determinism and fault tolerance of the CAN networks. At last, a novel CAN application protocol that outperforms the existing ones is outlined.

On the next generation network, application support functions and service support functions (ASF & SSF) are defined as those that control services. We propose a software architecture of ASF & SSF on real networks. Our architecture has generalized sequence-parts that control communication sessions and provide the application functions with high-level interfaces (IFs), such as Parlay-X, for using these parts. Our challenge is to force high-level IFs for application functions and low-level IFs (signallevel IFs), for example SIP, work in cooperation. Our evaluation results demonstrate that our architecture can reduce the number of states in an application function; therefore, we believe it can reduce the program size of an application function.

In this paper, we propose a cooperation mechanism among multiple virtual topologies in wavelength-routed optical networks. It is based on attractor selection and superimposition, which models the biological systemsthat behave cooperatively and symbiotically only by sharing a small amount of information with each other. While our proposed method allows each virtual topology to be controlled in a distributed manner, it achieves the cooperation among those virtual topologies with sharing the activity, which indicates the condition of each virtual topology. through simulations, we demonstrate that our proposed method coordinates all virtual topologies appropriately only by sharing the activity.

Development of advanced mobile internet services requires flexible service platforms. Every service offering needs generic functionalities like security, billing and customer data management. Such functionalities used to be integrated in the mobile network infrastructure but are now offered by competing service platforms. Service platforms can still be offered by operators but can also be embedded in the mobile phone or at systems of the service providers. Studying flexibility of service platforms requires technological as well as strategic analysis, and should take into account the perspective of multiple stakeholders. Where to locate service platforms is not just a technological matter as it greatly influences flexibility of both service providers and end-users. this paper analyzes how various service platform technologies that are located at operators, mobile phone and service providers enable or limit flexibility to both service providers and end-users.

Due to a rapidly shifting technology and competitive market environment, Telecommunication and Internet Services are constantly subject to changes, creating new challenges and needs for the industry to keep generating revenues. A high level of customization is therefore identified as a key enabler for achieving customer satisfaction and improving their quality of experience. Enriching services with innovative approaches such as context-aware, adaptable and interactive mechanisms enable the vendors to deliver tailored and personalized experiences to its customers. this article presents a concept to integrate policy-based decision mechanisms into the architecture of a Next Generation Network (NGN)-based converged messaging enabler for supporting adaptive personalization and context-aware service delivery across heterogeneous networks and messaging technologies. the system reacts to context changes and makes real-time decisions about handling incoming messages according to the users' preferences. A prototype has been implemented as part of the Open SOA Telco Playground testbed at Fraunhofer FOKUS.

Nowadays technologies, frameworks and architectures are forced to be service driven, platform independent, reliable and scalable. Application markets, Service Oriented Architectures and Cloud Computing are currently in focus of the new upcoming business models. Based on an analysis of service life cycle management and composition standards the following article illustrates an architecture for a service platform. this component provides boththe export of internal software components as services (inside-out approach) as well as a flexible service life cycle management by considering the needs of Platform as a Service (Paas )and Software as a Service (SaaS). Furthermore, the platform is able to import external services in order to enlarge the service portfolio (outside-in approach) or even to compose the services to create new mash-up services. this leads to collaboration and resource federation between service providers whereas the service access is organized and protected by a policy-based service management function.
