Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are some of the biggest problems for computer security. Detection and early alert of these attacks would be helpful information which could be used to make appropriate decisions in order to minimize their negative impact. this paper proposes a new approach based on SOM-type unsupervised artificial neural networks for detection of this type of attacks at an early stage. We present a SOM-based Computational Intelligent System for DoS Attacks Detection (CISDAD) and a new representation scheme for information. A study has been carried out on real traffic from a healthcare environment based on web technologies. Results show effectiveness in the detection of toxic traffic and congestion regarding abuse in communication networks.

this paper examines the phenomenon of the generic app store as a `foe', i.e. detrimental to Telcos' business, versus the role of a `friend', i.e. a valuable tool to compete in the emerging Telecom/Web landscape. Some successful app stores are run by device manufacturers and device OS vendors, and some Telcos are seeing a modest success too. the paper suggests that there is much more to gain from a Telco app store where apps enhance communications. the App Stores is a `friend' because it educates users to demand rich voice and - most importantly, to pay for apps, albeit small fees. It legitimizes the notion of a `disposable app', allowing Telcos to deliver `perpetual Beta' and get away with no user support. the plethora of popular Data apps through the app stores has marginalized Voice, but there is still great scope for related apps that `augment' reality. With IMS, Telco can differentiate app stores by offering multi-terminal, Fixed and Mobile synchronization facilities. Most of all, app stores are becoming the decisive factor in users choosing a network and a key interface to them that Telcos cannot afford to lose.

the most successful MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) model in practice today is the service provider model in which the MVNO appears to be a mobile network operator in its own right and sells comparable voice and data services to those of the underlying network operator. this model has been successful as the mobile operator and the MVNO can cooperate to create services that complement each other or will buy and host together platforms that the mobile operators will benefit from. In recent times, with the advent of new wireless access technologies IP data services to the mobile device are a reality and with this, new data based services have appeared which extend the reach of desktop and internet based applications down into the mobile device. this phenomenon of internet based services on the mobile device is likely to erode the existing user - network relationship, causing the user - network relationship to last for short time-scales of minutes to hours, as compared to the current contract of months to years. Consequently, MVNOs will have to rethink their business model and concentrate more on the development of data services which are independent and portable of the underlying access and transport network and gives their consumers the possibility of always being best connected to their data application.

Application Platforms and related APIs are becoming the foundations for emerging eco-systems of online applications/services. End-users are more and more choosing devices and services based on the available offers in the respective eco-system. Attracting and retaining application developers and end-users to a networked platform is nowadays more and more depending on the features available to developers in the form of APIs and (e.g. cloud-based) execution environments rather than on the actual portfolio of services. the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Next Generation Service Interfaces (NGSI) is one cornerstone of evolving a network operator towards an application platform provider with open APIs. Within NGSI, the Context API enables access to a plethora of rich information about users, places, events, and things - all made available by or brokered through the network operator. this paper explains the OMA NGSI Context API and its rationale, describes the operations, and discusses typical use cases and benefits it can bring to operators and application developers.

the widespread of the Distributed Generation (DG) impacts the future development of modern electrical distribution systems that must to evolve towards Smart Grids. Fundamental topics of the Smart Grid context are the Distributed Voltage Automation and the Advanced Network Automation based on fast communication channels. In order to analyze the behavior of a network which evolves in Smart Grid, real time digital simulation, using a closed loop system, is an indispensable approach because allow to study normal and critical situations that can happen in the grid. Besides the interaction with real devices can be performed, in order to verify their correct operation. In this paper, after a general description of the real time simulation in the Smart Grid context, the behavior analysis of an interface protection device is performed using the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) installed in the Enel Distribuzione S.p.A. test centre.

this paper presents a mapping between the Enterprise Architecture framework ArchiMate and the Substation Configuration Language (SCL) of IEC 61850. Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a discipline for managing an enterprise's information system portfolio in relation to the supported business. Metamodels, descriptive models on how to model and one of the core components of EA, can assist stakeholders in many ways, for example in decision-making. Moreover, the power industry is a domain with an augmented reliance on the support of information systems. IEC 61850 is a standard for the design of Substation Automation (SA) systems and provides a vendor independent framework for interoperability by defining communication networks and functions. the SCL is a descriptive language in IEC 61850 on the configuration of substation Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) which describes the structure together with physical components and their relating functions. By using SCL, which models the architecture of SA systems, and mapping it to ArchiMate, stakeholders are assisted in understanding their SA system and its architecture. the mapping is intended to support the integration of SA systems applying IEC 61850 into the enterprise architecture. the mapping is demonstrated with an example applying the mapping to a SA configuration based on SCL.

Parallel transmission is one of the popular techniques to realize huge bandwidth between two network nodes. However, in parallel transmission, many packet order inversions will be occurred when the delay difference among the routes is large, and TCP throughput will be drastically decreased under such a circumstance. In this paper, a TCP over SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) parallel transmission system is proposed to realize large TCP throughput over parallel transmission. In proposal, TCP is used in order to achieve end-to-end communication, SCTP plays a role to defeat packet inversion. Each TCP packet is encapsulated into SCTP packet at Gateway node which is located on edge of a parallel transmission section. In this paper, the proposed system is implemented on the software switch to evaluate parallel transmission. A parallel route selection algorithm is also proposed and evaluated delay difference characteristics.

A next generation access network becomes necessary to upgrade the systems, providing a larger dedicated bandwidth to each user. Optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) is one promising candidate for new-generation broadband multiple access technique with unique features of full asynchronous transmission, low latency access, soft capacity on demand as well as optical layer security. Recently, a cost-effective OCDMA system using a single multi-port en/decoder at an optical line terminal (OLT) and superstructured fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) encoder/decoders at each optical network unit (ONU) in an optical network has been proposed and demonstrated. In this paper, we report our proposed 10 Gbps-class, bandwidth-symmetric, OCDM-PON system, which includes a system configuration and the characteristics of multi-port and SSFBG encoder/decoder. Moreover, we describe the demonstration of 8×8 full-duplex, asynchronous, 10 Gbps, DPSK-OCDMA system over 50 km transmission.

this paper outlines an ongoing programme of research, which concerns a methodology for the development and analysis of business models concerning mobile service platforms. these platforms result from the generative system that is the mobile Internet combined with mobile devices, further enhanced by advanced user interaction modalities. the mobile telecoms industry seeks to control the mobile Internet for profit, whilst maintaining its capacity for innovative and appealing content and services. the methodology introduced in this paper, which attempts to address the need to balance the need for control in business models, whilst maintaining the mobile internet?'s generativity, consists of three parts. First it builds potential business models for future services within the mobile telecoms industry using value networks. Second, it identifies positions of sustainable economic power for industry players using control points. third, it examines how external factors may lead to changes within those future business models using triggers. In so doing the paper brings together a methodology, developed by the Value Chain Dynamics Working Group (VCDWG), part of the MIT communications Futures Program (CFP), and state of the art business modeling literature, which is emerging from European universities. this paper presents an example using mobile service platforms as a focus of analysis, after which an agenda for further research is outlined. the work covered in this paper is part of a current research programme, namely the User Interfaces for Breakthrough Services work area of the Core 5 Research Programme of the Virtual Centre of Excellence in Mobile & Personal communications (Mobile VCE). the programme is jointly funded by the Mobile VCEs' industrial member companies and the UK Government, through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

In the recent years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have drawn a lot of attention and a lot of work has been done to provide an efficient communication infrastructure for these systems. this paper focuses on another - not so well studied-class of embedded networks: embedded networks used for control and automation purposes. In contrast to WSNs, these networks have a comparably stable infrastructure, with a low probability of node or link failure. the main challenge for the communication in control oriented networks is the heterogeneity of the underlying infrastructure and the resource constraints already known from WSNs. We propose an adaptable communication layer that leverages existing network protocols and at the same time provides a seamless communication over heterogeneous networks and an efficient and scalable network stack for individual nodes. We show the feasibility of this approach with a demonstrator for the smart energy management in a future home automation scenario.
