Modelling the fundamental performance limits of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is of paramount importance to understand the behaviour of WSN under worst case conditions and to make the appropriate design choices. In that direction, this paper contributes with a methodology for modelling cluster tree WSNs with a mobile sink. We propose closed form recurrent expressions for computing the worst case end to end delays, buffering and bandwidth requirements across any source-destination path in the cluster tree assuming error free channel. We show how to apply our theoretical results to the specific case of IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee WSNs. Finally, we demonstrate the validity and analyze the accuracy of our methodology through a comprehensive experimental study, therefore validating the theoretical results through experimentation.

Wireless sensor networks become ubiquitous to collect people's information in many people-centric applications, such as, health care, smart space and public safety. Because any misusage of these personal data might result in the leakage of privacy, it is expected that the data requesters can only access to the data what they are entitled to read. Based on a revised hash chain technique, we proposed a novel time-based privacy protection (TPP) scheme for multi-attribute data in WSNs. In the scheme, all the personal data are divided into 2-D subspaces representing data attribute and generation time. Data in each subspace is encrypted with a sub-key before its transmission to the sink. Anyone who wants to read data attribute at a particular time must get the corresponding sub-key from the sender node. TPP can generate a sub-key for data in each subspace in an efficient manner in terms of less sub-key generation time and low memory space usage. the simulation results show that the schemes can be applied to the resource limited WSNs efficiently.

Minimizing energy consumption is a key issue in designing real-time applications on wireless embedded systems. While a lot of work has been done to manage energy consumption on single processor real-time system, few work addresses network-wide energy consumption management for real-time tasks. Moreover, existing work on network-wide energy consumption assumes that the underlying network is always connected, which is not consistent with the practice in which wireless nodes often turn off their network interfaces in asleep schedule to reduce energy consumption. In this paper, we propose solutions to minimize network-wide energy consumption for real-time tasks with precedence constraints executing on wireless embedded systems. Our solutions take the radio sleep scheduling of wireless nodes into account when adjusting the execution modes of processors. We also propose a runtime dynamic energy management scheme to further reduce energy consumption while guaranteeing the timing constraint. the experiments show that our approach significantly reduces total energy consumption compared with the previous work.

High-performance storage systems are evolving towards decentralized commodity clusters that can scale in capacity, processing power, and network throughput. Building such systems requires: (a)Sharing physical resources among applications; (b)Sharing data among applications; (c) Allowing customized views of data for applications. Current solutions satisfy typically the first two requirements through a distributed file-system, resulting in monolithic, hard-to-manage storage systems. In this paper, we present Orchestra, a novel storage system that addresses all three above requirements below the file-system by extending the block layer. To provide customized views, Orchestra allows applications to create semantically-rich virtual block devices by combining simpler ones. To achieve efficient resource and data sharing it supports block-level allocation and byte-range locking as in-band mechanisms. We implement Orchestra under Linux and use it to build a shared cluster file-system. We evaluate it on a 16-node cluster, finding that the flexibility offered by Orchestra introduces little overhead beyond mandatory communication and disk access costs.

the seventh international symposium on asynchronous circuits and systems, in Salt Lake City, March 2001, featured a presentation with the challenging title 'Where are the Async Millionaires?' the morale of this invited talk by Kevin Normoyle, a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems, was that if the asynchronous community claims that their technology is so promising, why doesn't the technology create greed and fear. Greed in the sense that asynchronous technology might enable you to outperform your competition by exploiting unique possibilities, and fear that the competition may be doing this. the talk demonstrated an absence of fear and greed in the area of high performance computing. the number of asynchronous millionaires was proposed as a way to measure success. We are now at the fourteenth ASYNC conference in Newcastle, and seven years have passed. Today, hundreds of millions of asynchronous circuits are produced every year, and many of us may use it on a daily basis without being aware of it. As an example, asynchronous circuits designed using Handshake Solutions' Timeless Design Environment (TiDE) may be found in the vast majority of electronic (biometric) passports, in in-vehicle networks like CAN and LIN, in MEMS-based sensors such as for measuring tire pressure, in access-control systems, and in Near Field communication devices such as Nokia's 6131 NFC phone. In the talk, the author want to address some of the steps that have been taken to bring this disruptive technology to the market, and the challenges that had and have to be overcome. It is now obvious to the author that asynchronous technology can create greed and fear. It should be only a matter of time before the first asynchronous millionaires arise.

Secure communication reestablishment together with fast secret materials generations are key points in terms of the quality and performance of secure aero-wireless networks. In this paper, a fast secure communication reestablishing mechanism for secure aero-wireless networks is initially presented. the performance in terms of the consumed time and bit error rate (BER) while reestablishing secure communication using the proposed mechanism is then analyzed and compared. Our proposed mechanism is found to achieve better performance than that of conventional mechanism.

In this paper we examine the communication trees widely used in ad hoc networks. these trees can be used in a number of ways e.g. to route or broadcast messages and to aggregate information. In this paper we propose a new key distribution protocolfor large and dynamic ad hoc networks over unreliable channel. Protocol proposed here involves broadcast exclusion based on polynomial interpolation and secret key cryptography. Proposed scheme ensures security of broadcast and one-to-one communication, message authentication and gives a possibility to verify routing information. It also ensures tresilience which means that up to t nodes can be compromised without influencing the security.

We develop and analyse a generic model for performance evaluation, parameter optimisation and dimensioning of a bottleneck link in an integrated services communications network. Possible application areas include IP, ATM and GSM/GPRS networks. the model enables analytical evaluation for a scenario of integrated speech, video and data services, selected for the fundamental differences in their service characteristics. While a speech call is assigned a single resource unit for its entire duration, both video and data calls can handle varying resource assignments. the principal distinction between these elastic call types, is that in case of video calls, a more generous resource assignment implies a better throughput and thus video quality, while for data calls the increased throughput implies a reduced transfer time. Markov chain analysis is applied to derive basic performance measures such as the expected resource utilization, service-specific blocking probabilities and the expected video and data Q0s. Furthermore, analytical expressions are derived for the expected video and data QOS, conditional on the call duration or file size, respectively, and on the system state on arrival. As a potential application, these measures can be fed back to the caller as an indication of the expected QOS. A numerical study, focussing on a wireless access network, is included to demonstrate the merit of the presented generic model and performance analysis.

this paper deals with the performance analysis of multiple server retrial queueing systems with a finite number of homogeneous sources of calls, where the heterogeneous servers are subject to random breakdowns and repairs. the requests are serviced according to Random Selection and Fastest Free Server disciplines. the novelty of this investigation is the introduction of different service rates and different service policies together with the unreliability of the servers, which has essential influence on the performance of the system, and thus, it plays an important role in practical modeling of computer and communication systems. All random variables involved in the model construction are assumed to be exponentially distributed and independent of each other. the main steady-state performability measures are derived, and several numerical calculations are carried out by the help of the MOSEL tool (Modeling, Specification and Evaluation Language) under different service disciplines. the numerical results are graphically displayed to illustrate the effect of failure rates on the mean response time and on the overall system utilization. © ECMS 2007.
