A flexible, customizable and programmable network monitoring platform supporting the concept of on-demand monitoring (ODM), that provides to network management functions the ability to gather deep knowledge (i.e. monitoring data) about flow(s)-specific traffic flowing at a given point and time in the network e.g. statistics, traffic shape etc. is pivotal to driving management functions of a self-managing network. ODM is triggered or ad-hoc monitoring that transpires only when needed. A network management system (NMS) may require triggering the monitoring of some traffic at some ODM-supporting probes placed in strategic points in the network and demand the creation of a data model(s) reflecting some derived traffic characteristics e.g. statistics, so that the NMS or other systems may query the data model during the period in which monitoring is required for say traffic engineering. this paper introduces on-demand MIBs as a solution to the requirement of dynamic data model(s) creation and deletion

Service-level-agreement (SLA) monitoring measures network quality-of-service (QoS) parameters to evaluate whether the service performance complies with the SLAs. It is becoming increasingly important for both Internet service providers (ISPs) and their customers. However, the rapid expansion of the Internet makes SLA monitoring a challenging task. As an efficient method to reduce both complexity and overheads for QoS measurements, sampling techniques have been used in SLA monitoring systems. In this paper, a novel adaptive stratified sampling strategy is developed based on the stratified sampling with optimum allocation to make the QoS monitoring less intrusive and more efficient. Simulations using real traffic traces are conducted, which show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than systematic sampling and Poisson sampling

Recent parallel systems use multiple injection ports and various injection policies, but little is known about their impact on network performance. this paper evaluates the influence that these injection interfaces have on maximum sustained throughput in adaptive cut-through torus networks by modeling the number of injection queues (1 or 4), and the allocation of new packets to those queues. Network evaluations for medium to large size 2D tori show that designs with multiple injection ports do not improve performance under uniform traffic. On the contrary, they result in more pressure from the injection interface to acquire the scarce network resources of an already clogged system. Interestingly, for small networks, a single injection FIFO queue, with the HOLE it entails, indirectly provides the much needed injection control. For networks with thousands of nodes and multiple injection channels, as those being implemented in current massively parallel processors, this implicit form of congestion control is not enough. In such systems, restrictive injection policies are required to prevent routers from being flooded with new packets for loads beyond saturation.

Layered multicasting is an effective technique in distributing large-scale streaming multimedia content over the standard IP networks which form the Internet. Multicasting is effective method whether it is video, voice, or other forms of data when large quantities of receiving users are involved. Multicasting allows a single form of a signal to be transmitted with network protocols managing the mass delivery. the major issue is fairness, which is the desire for the multicast traffic not to overwhelm other usual traffic such as standard TCP traffic. the need for speed of UDP and its designed nature of obtaining as much bandwidth as possible is what causes the issue of negative impact on competing TCP flows. therefore a goal of operation is to control UDP traffic and use to its potential without disrupting other types of traffic. Shortcomings and any advantageous features of current protocols will be analysed to find mechanisms to assist in improving traffic friendliness. the focus of this dissertation is to analyse aspects of an amalgamation of core stateless fair queuing and stabilised random early drop along with other ideas in an attempt to offer an improved scheme for layered multicast fairness that will form a new protocol called stabilised CSFQ

In current IP networks, a classical way to achieve traffic engineering is to optimise the link metrics. this operation cannot be done too often and can affect the route of a lot of traffic. Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) opens new possibilities to address the limitations of IP systems concerning traffic engineering thanks to explicit label-switched paths (LSPs). this paper proposes a new method based on simulated annealing meta-heuristic to compute a set of LSPs that optimise a given operational objective. the hybrid IGP/MPLS approach takes advantage of both IP and MPLS technologies and provides a flexible method to traffic engineer a network on a day to day basis. We illustrate the capabilities of our method with some simulations and a comparison with other techniques on an existing operational network. the results obtained by setting up a small number of LSPs are nearly optimal and better than by engineering the IGP weights. Moreover, although it could be combined with a static setting of the latter, SAMTE alone gives already the same results as this combination in much less CPU time, which thus allows an administrator to keep its initial and meaningful IGP metrics in his network

Media evolved from media that can be described as integrated presentation in one form (multimedia), towards embedding the consumer into a computer graphic generated synthetic world (virtual reality), to the consumers' directly exposed to the media in their natural environment, rather than to computer interfaces (ambient intelligence), and will be evolving towards a fully real/synthetic world undistinguishable pure media (biomedia or bio-multimedia). this paper presents a solution for merging ambient intelligence with a mobile environment. Only a distributed intelligent network of interconnected mobile devices and sensor networks can enable the data acquisition, processing, and communication of information essential to perform the highly demanding tasks of an ambient system. this paper introduces the work of the newly established "New Ambient Multimedia (NAMU)" research group. the key-idea is the development of the "Digital Aura", a consumer surrounding intelligent digital environment of ubiquitous and pervasive mobile facilities.

this paper presents an efficient parallel-and-distributed string matching scheme in a heterogeneous environment. the contribution of the proposed approach is in two-fold; exploiting a non-trivial parallelism in each node that possibly is SMP, and distributed processing with dynamic load balancing on a network-connected system. For the parallel processing in each node, a multithreaded computation model is designed and implemented with Java threads. For the distributed processing, a dynamic load balancing method is developed and implemented with Java RMI. the proposed approach manipulates both exact string matching and approximate string matching with k-mismatches. Experimental results demonstrate that the approach is an efficient parallel-and-distributed solution to the problem in a clustered system that is either homogeneous or heterogeneous.

We show that TCP timers, based solely on RTT estimations and measurements, cannot capture with precision the level or flow contention. We notice that increased contention may stabilize RTT variation, minimize the deviation and, in turn, shorten the timeout. We show that this behavior is undesirable indeed, since it leads to unfair resource utilization. We propose CA-RTO, an algorithm that incorporates a contention parameter and a randomization technique into the Retransmission Timeout. We report significant improvement in fairness, great reduction of retransmitted packets and slight improvements in application goodput.

the wireless industry is undergoing a transition. We see the evolution from cellular 2G to 3 G standards, the migration from circuit to packet applications, and the procession of voice to data. We also see the industry incorporating new wireless access technologies such as WiFi and WiMAX. All of this is occuring in a market place where voice subscriber penetration levels in many parts of the world are saturating and there is incredible pressure to reduce network capital and operating costs. these conditions present signicant technology challenges to increase customer demand and further increase network capacity to lower network costs. In this talk we will review the market drivers and applications that will drive the next-generation services. We note that in response to these the network architecture will migrate to having more control at the edge with substantially more direct base station to base station communication. We will then present several technologies that address these issues.
