Backscatter communication and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are emerging paradigms in wireless communication that offer promising solutions to enhance the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of energy-constrained devices for 6G and beyond networks. this work introduces a coordinated direct and relay transmission system that leverages NOMA principles and incorporates a backscatter relay. the backscatter relay operates in hybrid mode and incorporates active information reception, passive information transmission through backscatter, and energy harvesting. the poster explores and analyzes the ergodic capacity of backscatter-based NOMA systems, shedding light on the average data rate achievable across diverse and changing conditions. the performance gain of the considered system is observed over the orthogonal multiple access. Finally, the Monte Carlo simulations are employed to validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

the forthcoming generations of wireless networks have a high demand for reliable and enhanced data rate transmissions which are crucial for emerging smart cities. thus, there is a need to develop efficient Link Adaptation (LA) for the last hop between end-users and the base stations in order to mitigate the severe interference resulting from the dense heterogeneous networks. We develop a Machine Learning (ML) based last-mile link adaptation method for a 5G wireless communication network. Dynamic selection of MCS for Resource Block (RB) allocation is efficient in terms of better network throughput and reduced BER which is verified through simulations for 5G New Radio (NR). We assume perfect channel estimation in our analysis. We have used a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model that dynamically selects the appropriate Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) ensuring 10 percent Bit Error Rate (BER) and maximizes the system spectral efficiency. Further, we evaluate the Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) corresponding to varied channel states for different frequencies of operation and the DNN model selects the Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) corresponding to the optimal MCS available at the corresponding base stations for the end -users. this results in seamless connectivity for mobile users adapting to the last-mile link efficiently and achieving a higher downlink network throughput. © 2022 IEEE.

Recent advances in the field of wearable sensing has promoted the emergence of many health tracking devices, including heart rate monitors. Heart rate monitors are commonly either chest-based or wrist-based. Currently, it is unclear whether there is a substantial difference in the performance of these different heart rate monitors. To determine the difference in the performance, in this paper, we compare two chest-worn heart rate monitors and one wrist-worn heart rate monitor. Our initial results indicate that there is substantial difference between the devices - the root mean square error between devices can be above 10 beats per minute. However, even though there is difference in performance of different heart rate monitors, yet each of these devices are capable of detecting stress (using an machine learning model) with a F1-score of above 0.8. In this paper, we also introduce the idea of formally verifying the rules obtained from the machine learning classifier;such formal verification will enable improving the explainability and confidence of the outcome of the machine learning models. © 2022 IEEE.

Municipal authorities in the suburban cities of many developing countries need to deal with rapid unplanned urbanization, huge population bursts, and policy planning under severe budget shortfalls. We have studied the clear clutter and disorder in public bus-stop patterns that prevail upon the city transportation system in such cities. this paper develops an auto-tuned mechanism for identifying the bus-stops and characterizing their Spatiotemporal features from the GPS trails obtained through spatial crowdsensing. Existing systems and algorithms cannot be merely replicated in this context because of the kind of heterogeneity and chaotic situation prevalent in the transportation system. In this paper, we analyze GPS traces of more than 6000km (approx.) bus navigation, which has been collected for two years (2014-2016) via automated war-driving through customized hardware, for bus routes at a suburban city, Durgapur, in India. We develop a novel leader-based hierarchical clustering algorithm to reveal public bus-stops from the GPS trails with 92% and 95% accuracy. the proposed approach can help transport policymakers make a timely decision for curbing stop irregularity to a large extent. © 2022 IEEE.

Several economic and environmental considerations have made the transition to electric mobility inevitable. the power system can derive substantial benefits from this transition since Electric Vehicles (EVs) that are not in transit can be used as energy storage resources in the grid. Successful integration of EV energy storage into the grid requires the accompaniment of certain reforms in grid and market operations, one of which pertains to economic dispatch. In this paper, we address the problem of economic dispatch for a power system that has EV energy storage integrated into it. A quintessential feature that distinguishes EV storage from other forms of energy storage is that EV storage is unreliable: An EV could connect and disconnect from the grid at random times and so the availability of an EV's battery to the grid is intermittent and random. Consequently, the system operator cannot bank on the energy that it stores in an EV to be available for discharge at a future time. these aspects necessitate a rethinking of the economic dispatch problem when EV storage is integrated into the grid. the economic dispatch problem must account not simply for the availability of storage, but also the uncertainty in the availability. In this paper, we model these aspects and formulate the EV storage-integrated Economic Dispatch (EV-ED) problem. We also present an optimal, albeit computationally intensive approach to solving it. Methods to overcome the computational difficulty are briefly discussed. © 2022 IEEE.

In this paper, sparse recovery of beam measurements at user equipment (UE) for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems is considered, where base station (BS) and UE are facilitated with antenna arrays. We consider multiple input multiple out (MIMO) systems to explore sparse recovery of beam measurements with full channel state information (CSI). However, in mmWave MIMO systems, due to the interference and background noise during UE mobility or non line of sight (NLOS) scenarios, the suitable beams needs to be selected from the beam vector. In such situations, the UE chooses the similar/repeated beam or fail to choose the best beam from the BS resulting high inter-interference. To overcome this problem, we use compressive sensing (CS) techniques to propose two methodologies called beam sub-space tracking (BST) and adaptive beam sub-space tracking (A-BST) to recover beam measurements in mmWave systems. Both BST and A-BST, methodologies can predict the sparse measurements (using sparse recovery mechanism) before selecting the best transmit/receive beam in each beam vector in UE. the proposed BST and A-BST methodologies are effective to recover the sparse measurements by optimizing the inner product of low rank matrix within CS matrix by tracking the beam vector efficiently. Finally, extensive simulations using MATLAB are conducted to compute the performance of BST and A-BST, methodologies in-terms of time complexity and prediction error considering sparsity in beam measurements with respect to the state of art. © 2022 IEEE.

Advancements in mobile technology led to the manufacturing of smart devices that have started generating massive amounts of data. this triggered a new interest in developing intelligent applications that can harness this data's power and provide meaningful insights from it. this data from various devices needs to be aggregated at a central location to provide more accurate predictions, raising severe bandwidth, privacy, and latency issues. this paper presents a novel distributed learning approach that trains a Variational Auto Encoder at each client and then uses this model's generative capabilities to create a sample set of points on the server. the server aggregates these samples from all the clients and then trains a single global model whose parameters are communicated back to the clients. We show through our results that the amount of data transmitted between clients and the server is significantly lower when compared to the federated learning as well as a central learning approach. We also show that our approach outperforms the federated learning approach in terms of accuracy by more than 3% when the data is distributed in a non-iid fashion and at the same time sees a small drop in accuracy which less than 2% in an iid scenario when compared to federated learning and central learning methods. We have also shown how the amount data transmitted and the variation in accuracies when the number of clients vary between 2, 5 and 10. © 2022 IEEE.

this paper provides an overview of DECT-2020 NR technology evaluation conducted by the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) in the context of IMT-2020 Evaluation Process solicited by the international Telecommunication Union (ITU). DECT-2020 NR, a Radio Interface Technology developed by ETSI TC DECT and DECT Forum, was submitted as an IMT-2020 candidate along with five other technologies. It is applicable in various use cases and markets, with focus on consumer and industrial IoT applications, such as industry and building automation and monitoring. In particular, it is targeting Ultra-Reliable Low Latency (URLLC) and massive Machine Type communication (mMTC) scenarios, based on decentralized network deployments. the WWRF performed a complete assessment of the technology which included a high-level assessment of services and spectrum capabilities, along with a minimum technical performance requirements analysis for the URLLC and mMTC test environments, based on inspection, analysis and simulation. For assessing characteristics using simulation, i.e., reliability and connection density, an in-house simulation tool was developed. the evaluation study addressed mesh topologies supported by DECT-2020 and proposed several enhancements to the ITU's evaluation methodology, which is defined for cellular topologies only. the technology was found to fulfill all the requirements specified by ITU's evaluation process for IMT-2020. © 2022 IEEE.

Data is replicated and stored redundantly over multiple servers for availability in distributed databases. We focus on databases with frequent reads and writes, where both read and write latencies are important. this is in contrast to databases designed primarily for either read or write applications. Redundancy has contrasting effects on read and write latency. Read latency can be reduced by potential parallel access from multiple servers, whereas write latency increases as a larger number of replicas have to be updated. We quantify this tradeoff between read and write latency as a function of redundancy, and provide a closed-form approximation when the request arrival is Poisson and the service is memoryless under prioritized reads. We empirically show that this approximation is tight across all ranges of system parameters. thus, we provide guidelines for redundancy selection in distributed databases. © 2022 IEEE.

We consider the best arm identification problem in stochastic multi-armed bandits (MAB) under a fixed budget setting where the agents learning the MAB instance are connected through a network. In our collaborative model, each agent's action and its associated reward are instantaneously observed by the agent as well as its one-hop neighbours. At the end of the budget, an ensemble learner (EL) aggregates samples from the agents and decides the best arm. the objective is to design arm selection policies for each of the agents (and a suitable aggregation policy for the EL) to minimize the probability of incorrect arm identification. We propose two collaborative learning policies that first partition the network of agents into dominating sets. We then employ (i) a highly exploring UCB-E variant or (ii) a 'Follow Your Leader' policy within each star partition, and at the end of the budget, the EL aggregates the samples from all the partitions to select the best arm. We show that our policies enjoy an exponentially decaying probability of error in the number of agents as well as the budget. Notably, our policies do not require a minimum dominating set partition of the graph (a hard problem), and the probability of error bounds remain independent of the size of the dominating set partition. © 2022 IEEE.
