this study aims to develop a compact, palm-free wearable system for mixed-reality (MR) environments that does not interfere with interactions with real objects. We propose a novel wearable system that presents the direction of force through a rotational skin-stretch distribution to the wrist by utilizing four independently controlled rotating tactors. Two control rules, local and global, are proposed to dictate the stimulus distribution. the local stimulus distribution produces a local distortion distribution by combining the rotation of two specific tactors and suggests a direction. the global control rule aims to present the overall direction of the force by combining the directional forces presented on both the palm and back of the hand. the capability of the system to present the perceptual intensity and directional stimuli was confirmed through two experiments. the first experiment confirmed that the proposed system could present perceived intensity. the second experiment showed that the global control law could present stimuli in the front-back direction, whereas the local control law could present stimuli in other directions except for upwards. these findings suggest that proposed system has potential to enhance MR experience by simulating static force sensations, such as the weight of virtual objects. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

One of the current limitations in digital educational experiences is the lack of touch. Touch is a critical component in the learning process and in creating inclusive educational experiences for sensorially diverse learners. From haptic devices to tangible user interfaces (TUI), a growing body of research is investigating ways to bring touch back into the digital world, yet many focus on a specific dimension (e.g. haptic feedback or kinesthetic manipulation) of touch. Learning, however, is a multi-dimensional touch experience - it is about moving and being moved. this work presents the Action Quad - a novel haptic-TUI design for teaching geometry (specifically quadrilaterals). the Action Quad is a multi-point-of-contact, reconfigurable tool that synergizes the affordances of both kinesthetic interaction and haptic feedback into a single form factor. We present findings from an initial user study (N = 11) investigating how sighted-hearing individuals approach, interact, and experience the Action Quad, and we present a case study with an individual with blindness. We share key takeaways from the design process and participant feedback on interactions with this novel haptic-TUI device, sharing design insights on an emerging area of research that could support a new class of educational learning tools rooted in touch. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In this paper, we presented memorable vibration patterns representing digit 0 to 9, which were designed based on writing patterns. Based on the collection of 50 participants’ handwriting pattern of 10 digits we gathered, we designed two different types of vibration patterns to generate the digits: vibrotactile flows and discrete vibrotactile simulations. In the user study, we evaluated identifiability and learnability of the patterns we generated. First, participants successfully identified 69.4% of vibrotactile flow patterns and 77.5% with discrete vibrotactile simulations in their first session of 30 trials without training. the average recognition rate in their last session 30 trials increased to 83.6% for vibrotactile flows and 91.1% for discrete vibrotactile simulations after two sessions (60 trials), shows the ease of learning the vibration pattern. We also observed a lasting learning effect of both types of vibrotactile patterns in a delayed recall test was conducted 72–96 h after the first user study – 90.0% success rate for vibrotactile flows and 91.4% for discrete vibrations. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In order to solve the problems of intensive fruit planting scale, rising labor costs, and rural labor force loss, a fruit-picking robot based on intelligent Internet of things is designed in this paper. Fruit-picking robot uses raspberry pie 4B and STM32 board as the main part. the employed modules include USB high-performance camera, ultrasonic ranging, color sensor, wireless transmission, gear control, GPS, laser radar ranging and gyroscope. Using YOLO algorithm and D-H parameter method to achieve accurate identification of target fruit, accurate picking of ripe fruit and stable mobility of the machine. this can improve the adaptability to environmental changes for the fruit-picking robot. We proposed the "Tactile Clip," a device to induce an illusion of softness, and verified its effectiveness in augmenting softness perception. A Tactile Clip is a wearable device that provides circumferential-force stimulation to the feet. this force results in the deformation of the foot skin, consequently influencing the perception of softness. We conducted a psychophysical experiment using the interleaved staircase method. Twelve participants assessed foot softness by comparing the stepping sensation of the reference sample with the Tactile Clip to that of the test samples without the Tactile Clip. From the response rate, we derived a psychometric curve and bias value. the results showed a significantly positive bias in the perception, suggesting that the Tactile Clip made the flooring material feel softer than the actual softness. We consider the factors contributing to this phenomenon as a slight increase in the foot’s thickness by deformation of sole skin and/or cognitive effects due to changes in force stimulation on the side of the foot in response to stepping. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

this paper conducts an analysis and investigation of outage performances and ergodic sum capacity for different users within each cluster in downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. Analytical expressions for outage performance and ergodic sum capacity are derived and analyzed. the analysis and simulation demonstrate that NOMA systems with more users in one cluster exhibit higher performance with lower average channel gains, while NOMA systems with fewer users in one cluster exhibit higher performance with higher average channel gains. this suggests the need for different user grouping strategies under varying signal-to-noise ratio conditions, and the fixed user grouping schemes for NOMA systems are inadequate to adapt to complex environments and diverse services. Consequently, this paper brings in the mixed user grouping NOMA systems, which offers greater advantages comparing to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and conventional NOMA. Finally, this study provides pathways for further research on mixed user grouping in downlink NOMA systems. © ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2025.

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have attracted considerable attention in the realm of human action recognition. However, conventional GCNs-based methods typically struggle to construct adjacency matrices that capture diverse semantics, thus leading to performance limitations. To tackle this issue, we propose the Echo Graph as a set of adjacency matrices, which includes both hierarchical and global graphs. Specifically, our hierarchical graph exploits the hierarchical information based on the selected central broadcast nodes, aggregating joints dispersed across considerable physical distances into a unified semantic space. the global graph we construct transcends the limitations imposed by physically defined topological structures, delving into comprehensive information exchange among nodes. Additionally, we propose node activation and hierarchical activation model. these activations aim to prominently highlight crucial nodes and edges for specific samples. Finally, we incorporate Margin ReLU distillation to improve computational efficiency and design a four-stream integration using only the joint and bone data streams from two central broadcast nodes. Based on the aforementioned components, we propose EchoGCN, capable of extracting representative skeleton features. Experimental results on three datasets (NTU-RGB+D 60, NTU-RGB+D 120, and NW-UCLA) demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

the importance of computer network experiments in teaching is elaborated, while traditional computer network systems have low efficiency and chaotic management, these shortcomings affect the effectiveness of related teaching heavily. To overcome the shortcomings of traditional experimental systems, a computer network experiment system based on SDN has been constructed, which relies on SDN and AAA to manage network equipment, network simulators, and student experiments. Laboratory managers rely on SDN for device authorization, students rely on SDN for fast and secure computer network experiments, and teachers rely on SDN to obtain corresponding experimental evaluations. Two typical experiments in the experimental system are introduced, and teaching has achieved good results through the experimental system.

Sustainability education has evolved from a necessity to a responsibility, or even an obligation. Numerous awareness initiatives have been implemented to meet this, including advertising campaigns and educational materials. Serious games combine entertainment with education and offer a powerful communication strategy to engage society and promote sustainability awareness. this paper presents Pick Energy Cards, a prototype of a serious game designed to educate players on energy consumption, water waste, and environmental pollution. the study’s primary focus is the evaluation process, which aims to validate the game concept and assess both its usability and playability before testing its educational impact. To achieve this, the EGameFlow usability survey has been employed. A diverse group of 24 participants, aged 18 to 60, with varying levels of video game experience, participated in the study. After playing the game, participants completed the survey. the results demonstrate that Pick Energy Cards has the potential to serve as an effective learning tool for players across all age groups. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
