Existing techniques for animation of object fracture have a basic assumption that the object materials are homogeneous while most materials in real world are heterogeneous. To solve this problem, we introduce a novel method called MCA to simulate the fracture of heterogeneous materials. the method of movable cellular automata (MCA) is based on the discrete concept and provides advantages both of classical cellular automaton and discrete element methods. First, the object is represented as discrete sphere particles, named movable cellular automata, and then the MCA method is used to simulate the material and physical properties as well as to determine when and where the fracture occurs. To meet the real-time requirement, the MCA simulation is performed on GPU with CUDA in order to accelerate the complex calculation of automata's physical properties. After simulation, the results are directly sent to the vertex buffer object (VBO) for rendering to avoid the costly communication between CPU and GPU. the experimental results show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

this paper presents an automatic video highlighting approach in relation to a soccer match video lasting over ninety minutes, in which only the match video and the target length of the highlight video are required for the composition. Firstly, we propose a core-around event model, which represents the highlight as a complex event and consists of three components: semantic relations, temporal relationship among the activities and local motion appearance of each activity. Secondly, we detect activities involved in a highlight in the soccer match video by the local motion appearance. thirdly, a candidate highlight video segment is aligned withthe model by a specific kernel activity extracted on the basis of the semantic relations, and then assigned a matching score. Finally, we splice together the highlight segments of high matching score. Experimental results demonstrate that the composed highlight videos are attractive episodes of soccer matches, and similar to those edited by professional editors.

Rendering of volume caustics in participating media is often expensive, even with different acceleration approaches. Basic volume photon tracing is used to render such effects, but rather slow due to its massive quantity of photons to be traced. In this paper we present an image-based volume photon tracing method for rendering volume caustics at real-time frame rates. Motivated by multi-image based photon tracing, our technique uses multiple depth maps to accelerate the intersection test procedure, achieving a plausible and fast rendering of volume caustics. Each photon dynamically selects the depth map layer for intersection test, and the test converges to an approximate solution using image space methods in a few recursions. this allows us to compute photon distribution in participating media while avoiding massive computation on accurate intersection tests with scene geometry. We demonstrate that our technique, combined with photon splatting techniques, is able to render volume caustics caused by multiple refractions.

this paper presents the results of a study conducted on integrating interactive computeraided learning into teaching English as a Second Language to adult learners in Sri Lanka. Two sample groups of similar language competency levels preparing for an international examination were selected to assess the effectiveness of computeraided language learning in enhancing language skill, While the duration of the course and material supplied were similar, one group relied entirely on course material and face-to-face teaching, whereas the second group was additionally introduced to computeraided language learning activities. At the end of the course the students of the second group showed remarkable improvement in their language skills securing high band scores at the examination.

We present a novel approach to tracking of flexible broncho-scopes by modeling the output as spatially continuous over time. Bronchoscopy is a widespread clinical procedure for diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases and navigation systems are highly needed. Tracking of the bronchoscope can be regarded as a deformable registration problem. In our approach we use hybrid image-based and electromagnetic tracking, and the bronchoscope pose relative to CT data is interpolated using Catmull-Rom splines for position and SLERP for orientation. We evaluate the method using ground truth poses manually selected by experts, where mean inter-expert agreement was determined as 1.26 mm For four dynamic phantom data sets, the accuracy of our method is between 4.13 and 5.93 mm and shown to be equivalent to previous methods. We significantly improve inter-frame smoothness from 2.35-3.08 mm to 1.08-1.51 rum. Our method provides a more realistic and physically plausible solution with significantly less jitter. this quantitative result is confirmed by video output, which is much more consistent;anal robust, with fewer occasions of tracking loss or unexpected movement.
