Based on globally supported radial basis functions, this paper presents a hierarchical approach to 3D scattered data interpolation. Given a scattered data set distributed along a surface, we first obtain a sparse approximation of the scattered data set by filtering the scattered data with two different steps, and identify the characteristic points by the measurements of bounding cube and the distance between the points and the interpolating surface. then using multi-level hierarchy of point sets, the accuracy of interpolating surface can be gradually improved. On the basis of effective selection of the off-surface normal points, the number of constraint conditions is reduced, and trivial solutions of the interpolating equations can be avoided. Above all, we can identify the characteristic points in the model with less data points, and obtain interpolating surface with higher fitting accuracy by solving equations with lower order. the numerical experiments show that the method is more efficient and easy to implement.

In a traditional classroom the intended learning outcomes have been formed according to the scope of the learning and teaching aims and also based on the structure of course program. It indicates what the learners will learn and the knowledge they will obtain at the end of the course of study. Over the past few years the trend towards a Web-based instructional system has been introduced to the learning and teaching environment. Currently there are many learning materials which are found on the Web. However, this can make it difficult for learners to choose the right study materials which would match with what learners have already learnt and what they would like to know. In this research we consider a learner competence which indicates the differing level of intended learning outcomes depending upon the context of the learners? performance. We propose a competence-based system for recommending study materials from the Web based on the learner?s competences. the design of system is considered from a competence structure and we map it into a form of XML schema. By considering the schema, the system can be modifiable and reusable for other knowledge domains. Hence the system not only identifies the learner?s competence and suggests study material links from the Web but also the developer can designthe competence structure and import it into the system for the future use.

Direct volume rendering (DVR) is established as a powerful tool for volume visualization, which accumulates the color and opacity contributions by means of a simple light transport model. However, the mapping from data attributes to the optical properties is defined by transfer functions, the design of which is always a challenging and time-consuming task, even for expert users. In order to build informative images from original volume datasets without specifying intricate transfer functions, we present in this paper a depth-based feature enhancement visualization technique that could provide all features along the viewing ray at once, even with a simple linear transfer function. Once the accumulated opacity overflows, our approach resorts to an adaptive depth-based weighting to reduce the accumulated opacity value for adjusting the contribution of each voxel in the final pixel. To improve the visual perception of interesting features, such a modulation would be further enhanced when local maximum structures are encountered along the viewing ray. In addition, we provide a focus and context interaction and achieve a depth-based clipping operation to help users distinguish the order of internal structures. We conduct experiments on several volumetric datasets, and more structural information is presented and features of interest are largely enhanced in our rendering results, which further demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Web-based e-Picture books can integrate the elements of multimedia and offer the special reading experience that is different from printed picture books. the research aims to understand the development status of three epicture book websites in Taiwan and give recommendations for improvement. through 1) 12 adults who filled out the questionnaires about browing e-Picture books;and 2) 10 surveyed (two teachers, two parents and six children) who were observed in their operation and given in-depth interviews, the research analyzed three interface designs of e-picture websites in Taiwan: "Guru Bear Parent-Child Common Reading Network: Dear Bear Reading Room", "Kiddo Book" and "CCA (Council for Cultural Affairs) Children Cultural Center: Picture book Garden". the results of analysis were: 1) most of them were flipping pattern;2) primarily linear development;3) less interactive;4) most of them were adapted from physical printed books;5) it is difficult for children to register additional account and install browsing software. the recommendations for future publishers and designers were: 1) increase the interaction of the story;2) Make good use of multimedia interactive design elements;3) Enhance user control;4) Integrate e-Picture Book platform;and 5) create all-new e-Picture books.

Seismic volume datasets are usually obtained in 32-bit floating point precision, which makes them difficult to be processed on commodity computer due to their large size and high dynamic range (HDR). In this paper, we present a novel quantization method which not only compresses the size of seismic datasets, but also preserves the important seismic features such as detailed structures, local relevance structures and singularities. Our method first identifies the sub range of detailed structures by measuring the difference between the histograms of original datasets and those smoothed by bilateral filter. then, local relevance statistics (LRS) is proposed to determine sub ranges of local relevance structures. We also assign relatively small sub ranges for preserving some indispensable singularities. According to the piecewise coordinates, our feature-preserving quantization technique is conducted and the low dynamic range(LDR) datasets are generated. To further preserve the local contrast and keep the continuity of original datasets, tone reduction and Bezier curve are resorted to optimize our quantization process. As will be shown in the comparative study, our quantified LDR datasets could be easily rendered on normal graphic hardwares, and the rendering results still present the features of interest, which facilitate further seismic interpretations.

Real-time adaptation is challenging in both operational and training environments, as the system must be able to identify what, why, and when mitigation is needed, and how best to mitigate to optimize the human-system interaction. Training systems have additional complexities, as the sole goal is not to optimize performance as in operational environments, but to optimize training, which may involve more error allowance for learning opportunities. this paper outlines a proposed hierarchical adaptation framework for adaptive training systems, involving diagnoses of learning state, performance, and expertise. It will also discuss candidate approaches to obtaining the necessary measurements using physiological and neurophysiological processes, provide some guidance for designing strategies for optimal adaptation, and highlight current challenges and future research areas.

Applications like Twitter which use chat-like short messaging systems (SMS) have been widely used in public, political, military, emergency, humanitarian and other fields. Such applications usually involve servers (controllers) which control and forward messages from a sending client to a receiving client. the use of mobile wireless networks for such messaging systems has been increasing at a fast pace. To cope withthis increase, there need to be efficient communication protocols and algorithms. To design such protocols and algorithms requires extensive analysis and understanding of the behavior of the communicating nodes under a given mobility scenario. One of the good metrics to understand the performance of such protocols is the reliability of message delivery. In this paper we present analytical models of the average reliability of short (chat-like) message delivery in mobile wireless networks as a multivariate function of the transmission range, movement area dimensions, number of servers (base stations) and message deadline (lifetime) under moderate realistic assumptions which can be easily relaxed and extended. Simulation results show that our analytical models give very good estimation of the average reliability of message delivery. Copyright 2011 ACM.

Virtual reality based preoperative planning for Minimally Invasive Vascular Intervention is useful, not only for increasing the success rate of operation, but also used as a training tool for improving doctors' skills. In this paper we present an interactive 3D preoperative planning and training system with haptic device. In this system, we present an intelligent trajectory planning algorithm for searching an optimal path automatically along the centerline in two ways: from the suitable inserting point to the specific target location or to the most of objectives. Also, for the purpose of interactive training, we connect the haptic device to the end of guide wire and propose an algorithm that enables the simulator to model guide wire and catheter insertions realistically through essential operations i.e. pushing, pulling and twisting actions. We demonstrate experiment results to show that the 3D preoperative planning and training system is usable for simulating guide wire insertion procedures with complex blood vessel structures.
