Selecting the best views for 3D objects is useful for many applications. However, withthe existing methods applied in CAD models, the results neither exhibit the 3D structures of the models fairly nor conform to human's browsing habits. In this paper, we present a robust method to generate the canonical views of CAD models, and the above problem is solved by considering the geometry and visual salient features simultaneously. We first demonstrate that for a CAD model, the three coordinate axes can be approximately determined by the scaled normals of its faces, such that the pose can be robustly normalized. A graph-based algorithm is also designed to accelerate the searching process. then, a convex hull based method is applied to infer the upright orientation. Finally, four isometric views are selected as candidates, and the one whose depth image owns the most visual features is selected. Experiments on the Engineering Shape Benchmark (ESB) show that the views generated by our method are pleasant, informative and representative. We also apply our method in the calculation of model rectilinearity, and the results demonstrate its high performance.

In the process of numerical simulation, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is commonly used for product design optimization. the product model has to be modified according to its associated optimization result obtained based on analysis, and the mesh model needs to be regenerated for analysis to verify the modification. In order to reduce the time for mesh regeneration, one effective way is to directly edit the mesh model according to the modification requirements. In this paper, we present a novel mesh editing method for FE mesh models. the approach achieves the complex and accurate modification on FE mesh models through CAD operations and limits the remeshing to the modified region of the whole mesh model so as to make the approach efficient. Firstly, sweeping operation and Boolean operation are used to construct the new geometry on the mesh model according to the modification requirements, taking the mesh elements as the reference of the operations. then, mesh geometry fusion is conducted, making the related mesh elements aligned withthe intersection lines between the original mesh model and the newly added geometry through node repositioning. Finally, mesh elements for the newly added geometry are generated and optimized. Compared with traditional mesh editing methods, the proposed approach can achieve complex editing of FE mesh model more effectively and efficiently. And the preliminary experimental results show the potentials of the proposed approach.

Vertical jumping is one of the fundamental motions among other jumping types in sport biomechanics. Two important criteria in sport biomechanics are critical to all athletes: Injury and performance. In literature two major approaches have been investigated: experiment-based methods and optimization-based methods. Experiment-based methods are time consuming and tedious. Optimization-based methods for musculoskeletal models are computationally expensive because their models include all muscles and explicit integration of equation of motion. In this pilot study, a direct optimization-based method for a skeletal model was proposed in sagittal plane, where this formulation was based on joint space that was only considered the resultant results of muscles (joint torques) instead of individual muscles to reduce computational time. the cost function included increasing the center of mass velocity at take-off and increasing the center of mass position at take-off. Constraints included joint limits, torque limits, initial posture, ground contact, initial angular velocity and acceleration, zero-ground reaction forces, and moment at take-off. this optimization problem was solved by a commercial optimization solver SNOPT and the CPU time was 227 seconds on a regular PC (Intel(R) Core(R) 2 duo CPU, 3.16 GHZ and 3.25 GB RAM). Preliminary results highly correlated results from the literature. this simple planar simulation is the first step to understand the cause and effect for vertical jumping with or without arm swing.

In geological engineering, stratum structure detection is a fundamental problem in project planning and implementation. One of the most commonly employed detection technologies is to take videos of borehole using a forward moving camera. Following this approach, the problem of stratum structure detection is transformed into the problem of constructing a panoramic image from the taken video sequences, which are typically in low quality. In this paper, we propose a novel method to create a panoramic image of the borehole from the video sequence without camera calibration and tracking. To stitch together pixels of neighboring frame images, our camera model is designed with a focal length changing feature, along with a small rotation freedom in the two-dimensional image space. Essentially, our camera model assumes target objects lie on a cylindrical wall and the camera moves forward along the central axis of the cylindrical wall. Our method robustly resolves these two degrees-of-freedoms through KLT feature tracking and constructs a panoramic image by stitching strips. Experiment results show that our method could efficiently generate high-quality panoramas for very long video sequences.

Websites on e-commerce often display large amounts of multi-media and information, creating problems for viewers when locating specific information. this research uses the concepts of template and selective attention to understand the cognitive simplification in finding information and browsing websites. Utilizing content analysis with 240 university students as subjects, we conducted an experiment on information retention with browsing a shopping website. Although the amount of information displayed by the website was staggering, the result of the experiment showed that participants applied a template built up through past experiences of what's important and where things belong. this internal map containing three mechanisms: segmentation, grouping and attention, is then used to create an efficient task strategy, to segment the page, and to categorize the information. this research tried to understand the attributes of template for users who are browsing Websites. the "findability" of online information would be improved if the arrangement of information of a web site were the same as what viewers expected.
